Fears for NGOs in Russia as tax raids multiply

Senior EU officials have voiced concern as checks by Russian tax inspectors on foreign-funded non-governmental organisations multiply.

On Wednesday searches took place at the Moscow offices of Human Rights Watch and Transparency International.

Two German political NGOs were searched earlier in Moscow and St Petersburg.

Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle summoned the number two diplomat at the Russian embassy in Berlin to relay his "concern over the concerted action".

My immediate query when I first read this is, does it relate in any possible way to the unfolding crisis in Cyrpus with the EU crackdown on bank deposits?

Apparently there are a number of wealthy Russians with large deposits in Cyprion banks that will face a large haircut of 40 oer cent or more. The haircut affects those with deposits of over $100,000 Euros.

I understand from the article that such 'checks' have been going on since prior to the materialization of the banking crisis, but now it appears that EU ministers are getting concerned at what is a seeming escalation (multiplying) of Russian checks on German NGOs in the country?

Sounds like the former Soviet Union is one step closer to resurgence. All part of Putin's grand plan. Note his recently renewed ties to China. A move that was put on broad display over the last week. Putin pulled out all of the stops and rolled out the red carpet for China's new president recently.

I personally think it's a smart move, and should have been done sooner. When those NGO's, receiving funding from foreign nations, are working to fund political opposition groups and subverting the political system in the host country, then yes, they should be shut down immediately.
Would the US or UK allow foreign funded NGO's (apart from Israeli ones of course) to act in the same way, using money provided by foreign nations to try and overthrow the political system (or worse) of that nation? Of course not!

Moscow is really sticking it to the western bankers right now, especially with it's moves, along with other BRICS nations, in abandoning trade in the US Dollar, and not allowing foreign banks to operate within it's borders. After all, who can blame them, when you look at what a stellar job those organizations are doing in the rest of the world.

If this is being reported on, imagine everything that is happening that doesn't get reported on. A lot happens behind closed doors!
