It is real. The article you refer to is small mosquito sized drones. They already have developed a dog like robot in addition to this snake. The problem is they both rely on outside power cord at this time. Once they have a good battery for it's go time.

It is an artist's concept. It was the cover art for a story. It is no more real than the 'gps sniper rifle', which was also an art project.
