It's Not any Specific song it is a Genre particularly COUNTRY MUSIC.

Country Music built its roots on SAD. Back then there were only 2 types of music, .. . Country And Western . ..

It is all about: . .. . There's a tear in my beer 'cause my wife left me for her homosexual twin brother and my dog has Rabies but Unfortunately just started her "In Heat" cycle and I lost my job 'cause I like to drink a little more than I like customer service and the sad, sad story goes on and on . .. .. . It’s synonymous to a Greek Tragedy.

I completely stray from it.

Frankly, .. If I wanted to cry, I would bust myself in the damn nose.

This is the closest i've come to tears ha ha.

Can you tell I like tom waits?

Good or bad depressed/break up song I suppose. lol

This is good. I feel piano portrays the best emotion with out any lyrics.

Most masculine thing that has been said in this thread.

I can't say I have had a song make me cry, and I really don't see the emotion in some of the examples but much of them seem to be playing on some past negative experience for the other members here. It's not so much the song but what it reminds them of I suppose.

Interesting thread, just goes to show music touches everyone differently.

I for one get moved by certain guitar solos and or melodies maybe due to me being a guitarist I know it's a heart on sleave moment for the muso.

Tone used in a solo is a very powerful tool as well, but It may just be me.

Perhaps saved for another thread.

The best friend I've ever had to this day had just been killed, and I was sitting by my window, looking out at our neighbors' yard, and up at the star filled sky through the branches of a huge tree. It was a period of my life when I was totally isolated from people except for a single family member who I couldn't really talk to about it. I wasn't close to or in touch with any of my deceased friend's friends or family.

I was desperately pleading with the cosmos for some hint of connection, some sliver of communication with my friend and brother who was now gone, as I stared up through the tree branches.

And this song started to play. To this day, it guts me.

Peace.

Here is an Aussie classic that isn't exactly a tear jerker but if you are a Vietnam veteran (or any veteran for that matter) you may appreciate it more than others.

I like to think I'm as manly as the next guy, but I have to say, the song "River" by Natalie Merchant, gets the tears flowing sometimes. It's about the death of River Phoenix. Very moving.

Yea, that one really hits home for me. When I was young and on a job site, sometimes I would start to sing or hum it. Other guys would shout me down and tell me that song was to sad. A bunch of construction workers were afraid to here it.
