If you look throughout the thread, the majority of the people posting quick responses haven't been on ATS very long or have few posts. You hit the nail on the head: This is the last Mayan-based prediction. Any future predictions will have no way to be connected to the Mayans whatsoever. This is why it would be very easy for the elite to get the US into civil war. All they would have to do is wait until a major protest of 1+ million people at a popular location, kill somebody in the government who is popular, and tell the general population that the "tea party activists" did it. Then, they would use a bunch of people trained by the CIA or whoever else to rile up the dumb population to fight. Either that, or they would have a white guy kill Obama, get both whites and blacks on both sides to get each side riled up, and start a race civil war. It's all very easy to do, and that is why it would take either God or aliens to actually end all of this. Though you are correct that the Mayan connection may be put to bed, I disagree that the Mayan based doomsday predictions weren't faith-based!

Those predictions were based upon the faith of the Mayans. It has about as much leverage as Biblical predictions, or any other faith.

I think that is what some people here tried to point out- today it was Mayan faith, tomorrow it will another, it never ends. There's a deep psychological need for humans to project such grand endings.

It's not exactly my own definition of that, but each of us has the right to our opinions.....

I suspect a lot of people didn't read the full OP- so the incoherence of their reply is not so much a result of their lack of intelligence, as their degree of built up frustration and impatience with the repetative daily predictions of the world coming to a violent end, and human extinction.

The title lends itself to be percieved as another one of those, and though that might be a clever and fun twist (have to read carefully to see it was misleading) the author had to be aware that the largest part of response she/he'd get was the people blurting out this frustration.

I am guessing I am not even telling you something you aren't aware of, but who can resist an opportunity to put others down and proclaim oneself more rational, more intelligent, and more civil, huh?

Well said and thank you for checking my balance, to turn a phrase. I actually dialed it back quite a bit if you can imagine that, I was all geared up to go on an epically vitriolic tirade of ungodly proportions. I do remember a time when the user base of ATS was quite a bit more intelligent and civil, with less one liners and more care paid to actually reading what was originally posted (OP) by the thread starter (TS). I suppose that as the site becomes more and more popular, those standards will continue to become increasingly difficult to maintain, although I do think that we still have a very good percentage of bright and inquisitive minds.

Again, thanks for bringing some much needed perspective to what I'd written... at least I tried to end on a high note, right?

Earlier in this thread I predicted that nothing will happen and guess what, I was right. When will people ever learn to stop putting a date on the end of the world. So OP when is the next one? Did the Mayans forget to carry a 1 or try deviing by zero or another flaw in their math that will make a new end date?

The world didn't end today, can we ban the OP?

ATS needs to seriously make a stand with this garbage. We can't keep having new doom and gloom threads pop up every week because 12/21 never happened.
