I was not sure what topic to post this under, but this was the most general, what kind do world do we live in? Until the world's under developed countries acknowledge women as people in their own right we will never truly evolve.

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 28 (Reuters) - From Afghanistan to Liberia, from Colombia to the Congo, women and girls are being subjected to rape, torture and slavery that defy the imagination, a U.N. official said on Thursday.

Despite efforts to put "gender consideration" in U.N. humanitarian and peacekeeping missions, progress has been slow in achieving changes on the ground, Thoraya Obaid, director of the U.N. Population Fund, told the 15-member U.N. Security Council.

www.alertnet.org...

"We are here to speak about the unspeakable -- the gender-based and sexual violence that is occurring on a massive scale in conflict and post-conflict situations around the world," Obeid said.

The council, in an all-day debate, was taking stock of its four-year old resolution, the first recommending women in war zones get special treatment and have a seat at the peace negotiating table.

Noleen Heyser, director of the U.N. Development Fund for Women, said rape was "systematically deployed as a weapon of war." In Haiti and East Timor, rape had been used to punish wives and female sympathizers of a perceived enemy.

How do we deal with anyone who uses rape as a punishment and thinks it is ok? This kind of old world thinking is unimaginable, the cave man days are not yet over.

We live in Biblical times, characterized by Biblical deeds.

The use of rapine as a scourge against an enemy is as old as the hills, thus it appears in pretty much every holy text.

One thing is certain: This is nothing new.

i think most people would do quite bad deeds if they are allowed to do it and ensured no punishment

Even the prospect of certain punishment seems unable to persuade most people from doing evil at some point or another.

The true face of humanity does not bear easy viewing in a mirror.

Rape should be considered as and punished as a War Crime.

Well at least one sanctioner of rape as a weapon is gone thanks to Bush and the men in the US army. The rape rooms of Baghdad are empty now. No more fathers will be forced to watch there daughters get raped. No more Saddam torturing his political opponents and it is all thanks to George bush.

People need to know that bad deeds earn power and respect. Rape is a horrible subject even to talk about. Almost taboo in a way. However, rape, racism, terrorism...etc. All these topics fall in the magestrium of control and fear, which in turn creates power.

Very true. And obvious -- makes you wonder how much common sense the U.N. has when they have to be told things like this, doesn't it?

The spurious child shall then convey this message to it's mother -- U.S.-- who in turn will use human rights violations as a weapons to concede sanctions wilst commiting the most trecherous themselves....

This is sad. The U.N. needs a major military force, if not merge with NATO..

yeah i have thought about that many a time, what would the UN do if it was in control of NATO or vice versa or a merge.

It's not like the UN to state the obvious

One of the largest scale examples of the weapon of rape is Nazi Germany.
One Soviet Komsomol boasted after the War that "two million of our children were born in Germany". There are stories of whole tank companies lining up behind women and raping them for hours on end. And these women weren't all German, some were captured Russian and Polish women.

Perhaps the UN should ACT on human rights violations instead of merely "condemming" the filth who commit these acts.
