I know that it's Sunday night and all... but you gotta see this...

Posted this in Quake Watch 2013 (post link)... but starting a thread as well because I think it's "new-thread-worthy" for visibility. Maybe nothing will come of this... Maybe this new thread will save a couple more lives...

As of 9:20pm EST, seen 18 4.x and 5.x quakes logged in the past 7 hours.

Main map

Entries of all the 4s and 5s, as of 9:20 pm EST. These strong quakes started at 2:20 pm.

Thanks for the heads up OP.

I appreciate what you are doing here, but most of ATS wont. Prepare to be flamed.

Thanks again!

Take a closer look.
Lots of duplicates from different sources.

Good Catch.. Thanks. The two off of Japan are probably dupes. Nicaragua has a couple of close ones- probably dupes as well. So we can probably scratch two off of the list.

The others all have different depths, so they might be different quakes.

Yes, I love the global incident map, but they usually have 2-3 sources for each earthquake.

Often times the depths will be different, or the time will be different by a few seconds, but it is the same earthquake.

Well, hopefully nothing serious will come of these. Breathing easier now.

With this new light shed... if we disregard all the similar ones, there are approx. eight 4's and 5's net. That's a lot better than 18.

Another 5'er... Initial estimate is 5.2 Fiji Islands, about 1/2 hour ago.

I don't normally reply to earthquake threads because we don't get them where i live and tbh they freak me out.

I have an app on my phone that alerts every time an earthquake hits over 3.5. My mom made a comment about my phone going off a lot today, she thought I was getting a phone call but it was the app alerting me an earthquake had hit. I noticed how it was starting to drive me nuts because it just keep going off. I have 17 earthquakes from the 24th that are a 4.0 or higher. I don't see any duplicates either. Just from having this app for the last 6mths it seemed very active today in this quake range of 4-5.

The app I use is called "Earthquake" information is provided by the USGS. I use to have something similar on an old laptop. The screen would shake when an earthquake hit over a 6.0 The Haiti earthquake made my screen go nuts. I wanted that add on but they do not have it for Safari so I got the one for my phone. I am interested in earthquakes for pattern reasons but the idea of the ground just suddenly shaking scares the living day lights out of me!

Not liking the pattern that seems to be emerging... Maybe it'll stop after this one...

A 5.2 in the Samoa Islands region, meaning offshore.

Things are playing pretty fast and loose in that part of the world- yesterday and today... that's for sure.

Just as a F.Y.I... I had to look it up, as I'm a little slow at times... But the red dots on the map mean that they are the most recent. It's obvious now, isn't it?

The hits, they just keep on coming.... Hits, as in not-small EQs.

Um.... two more 4.0 and greater....

A 4.0 in the Canary Islands
A 5.1 in the S. Sandwich Islands region.

Getting pretty crzy! Pick an adjective... unprecedented, loco, nuts... I don't need to tell you that these are not 1'zee and 2'zee EQs people.

That region, Santa Cruz, sandwich islands has been active for awhile.

The one I really don't like is the Canary Islands one, that area makes me nervous after reading about that area being ripe to set off a huge tsunami.

I know it's one of those doomporn things I shouldn't worry about, but Ido.

I'm currently runing GEE (live global seismic program) and have Morro de la Arena, Canary Islands among the feeds I'm watching. I need to compare the times, because it never showed me any indication of jumping to a 4. Could be that station didn't pick it up?

The Canary Islands make me nervous too, and I know many people will rip the theory to shreds, but it's very much a possibility, and needs to be watched...the islands have been wiggling a good bit recently. A worst case scenario here wouldn't just affect the east coast of the US, but also the African, European, South American and Icelandic coasts. It almost would be the global coastal event that had been talked about in a few places over the years. Thanks for the updates.

First of all, allow me to explain the meaning of the word earthquake swarm..... it is a series of quakes all within a certain amount of time within the same spot, or very very near the spot of the first quake ..

this here does not consist of a quake swarm by any standards because their happening all over the world and from the informatuon you provided it is most deff not a swarm.. and thats just off the top of my head . plus i just woke up for the day . and this used to be my hobby , watching quakes and volcanoes and i have done extensive research over the years into what is what ...

i for one can honestly say there is nothing out of the ordinary here folks . unless we start getting quakes with mags that are over 5 and nothing but then id worry but for now ,. its business as usual.

According to the EMSC, it did indeed occur. Perhaps the station available didn't pick it up, I can't argue with it on record:

The "earthquakes" in/around El hierro are volcanic in nature and should not be considered as normal "earthquakes". There seems to be a very large magma chamber building up under El Hierro and the only questions are where is it going and what will it/can do.

Thanks for the replies on the Canarys.

Not making me feel better, but at least I'm not alone.

The volcanos setting of the landslide is what worries me. But maybe I am mistaken.
