so what blues came from southern usa .

doesn't matter where styles come from what matters is how people play the music

Actually Blues has it's roots in Europe and Africa.

I think both USA & UK music is and has been amazing, pioneering and just awesome.
I'm not sure one is better and there shouldn't be a contest, it's stupid.
Both UK and USA have had so many great bands, guitarists & songwriters that for every one you came up with, there is one to counter.

Now I love world music, all types of music too, but the UK and USA ha e had more success than all other nations put together, let's just appriciate and cherish that fact hey?

The aim of my thread was not to be of a contest. Just a bit of fun. As i said, it is too close to call and there could never be a "right answer"

I watched the Grammys and then I watched the Brit Awards.

It would seem more American music is played in England than English music played in the USA. The Brit awards had nominees that I had never heard of, and quite honestly, I thought sucked.

Oh, you can take back Mumford and Sons. Bluegrass is an AMERICAN thing. Ungh. And I hate how everyone likes them. There are so many more tallented true Bluegrass musicians in America.

In general England produces better quality actors though.

ETA: And Dr. Who, can't forget the good Doctor.

Well, I rarely try sarcasm, so I'll take it I am bad at it.
I just wanted to show my way I kinda knew where this thread was going.

The OP clearly mentioned "music" in the title, so I'll just excuse myself again saying that for me, music isn't all about guitar. I'll also enjoy sometimes soul, acid jazz, flamenco.

I also enjoy the sensual voice of a woman. (really different style from hairy, sweaty dudes)

So, end the sectarian violence.
Some (same) things might happen when a style mainly uses the same pentatonic scale in all their compositions.

Here's one to chill things a bit :

And a bit of sensuality and love in this world of brutes :

PS : Robert Johnson is an acquired taste, and, awesome.
PS 2 : don't go bezerk is someone posts some Spice Girls or Britney Spears.

Of course I've heard of Adele! :-P

I was stating that there were more nominations that I didn't recognize on the Brit Awards than I did recognize.

Another thing I found interesting about the Brit Awards was how shamelessly blatant the Discover Card sponsorship was. Big old logo right on the podium, and they were also mentioned as sponsors several times.

I didn't see any corporate logos at the Grammy's.

How dare you use sarcasim in a serious thread about music.
yea, my rant at you was unfair and by the time i'd written it, the thread had moved on.
I came home from work Grumpy. (Thank God for the Edit button)

Here's a fine example of an American (Beck) covering an Englishman (Bowie) with a full orchestra, gospel choir, yodeler, Guitars, Drums, Sawblade players and more, in a circular, musical extravaganza.

Sound and Vision.

for some reason this thread is making me have an uncharacteristic attack of reasonableness.
in short, rock music is the one thing that transatlantic cross pollenation, to and fro and back and forth actually got right and made something worthwhile everyone could love.
the old folk music, to and fro, add in the blues, mix it all together, let it mature - and it's just magic.
hendrix wouldnt have got to the heights (or at least got the exposure) without the trip to the UK.
zeppelin wouldnt have done what they did without a little of the blues from the US.

there are many other examples both ways and i could go into more details, but i'm sure you all get it

I was going to say American hands down. After all we got Elvis and Chuck Berry starting things out. But you educated me....I had no idea Dire Straits was British. I was jammin to Sultans of Swing on the way to the house today. Bitchin guitar!
Pink Floyd was British too yeah? wow
And the Stones are just timeless.
But...can you beat some classic Lynard Skynard. Some modern day Nickelback?
Ozzy? oh yeah...he's British.
Scorpions?....dang German..not even in the equation here...but damn they rock!
But here right here from the great state of Texas we got the awesome timeless ZZtop!
Rock and Roll post 1960....I personally will be fair and call it a draw in my opinion.
But being from Texas I love my classic honky tonk, down and out, drinkin, country music too and no where no how knows how to do that better!

Oh...and we got Eminem!....
(had to do that lol)

50 years ago, music was about a movement. A mutually shared one, No, there is no one better than the other. It's all good.

My all time favorite Smiths song right there.

Smiths being right up there with my all time favorite band Joy Division, along with The Cure, Depeche Mode and so many others.

But, I love American bands too....Tool/APC being quite high on my list, The Pixies, Nirvana and NIN. Too many more to name, not to mention other genres....I would really be here all weekend!

As far as the OP goes:

asking which is better, British or American is "Sophie's choicing it" a bit, IMO.

And for the record:

I do consider all forms of techno/D&B/Jungle/Trance and Dubstep music, guitars are not the definitive factor in whether something is music or not for me.

I'm an American. But, personally when I look at the staggering number legendary musical acts that have came from the UK (Beatles, Stones, Who, Floyd, Bowie, Queen, Elton, Zep, etc, etc, etc,,) I have to give the nod to our chums across the pond..

I don't really call U.S. vs. British music racism, but being from the U.S., my all time favorites are The Rolling Stones,
Led Zeppelin, and Grateful Dead. I am a musician myself and stray away from the mainstream. On pandora, I lean towards Left Lane Cuiser, Hillbilly Casino, Reverend Horton Heat and what-not. I used to play standup bass in a Nashville based rockabilly/blues band, Jane Rose and the Deadend Boys.

This is what I consider "cool", anything I can sit around and jam to on the guitar, bass, harmonica, drums, or dobro.
My two cents worth, and a desperate attempt to help out the band I was in.
