Just because a culture doesn't value what I call root-ratting in the west doesn't mean its anti-freedom. Get a grip. really.

it actually does when it enacts a law which applies that view to everyone

In principle the idea has merit as long as it applies to both male and female equally. Though Indonesia being predominately Islamic this is doubtful. Forced morality has never worked and actually has the opposite effect. One only need look at incidences of its use to prove the point. In the US they tried by outlawing alcohol, beer and hard lacquer with disastrous results. They ended up with more people drinking and becoming alcoholics during prohibition than prior to prohibition.

It would therefore be expected that premarital sex would increase rather than decrease due to it then being forbidden by law. However if the aim is to shackle women under Islamic law, than they might achieve their goal. Kind of reminds me of the way that Islam says it's the womans fault if she gets raped (even if an infant) and is punished for having premarital sex. The perpetrator on the other hand gets off free of charge, with a very light sentence or pay a fine. The woman involved can be whipped, put in prison or stoned to death. Never did understand that one.

Whats with Islam and its hatred of women? You know this proposed law is not focused on the Islamic males.

The idea has no merit here or there, or under any religious majority group for it slavery, forcing a person to live under the dictatorial views of another and I would rather the UN had a real living code of equality and freedom for all people and active police force of countries to set right all the ones that oppress people. Not by bombing, but by separating all the ones who say, me me, we want you guys here now, and the women and children in safe areas and then facing and arrest the crooks and setting up democracies and especially ones better than ours, with real citizens groups, open transparency, no patents and nothing that would make anyone stand under another's thumbs or institutions and monopolies. World Wide expectations.

Rubbish! So you are over there, freeing them, from their primative selves ??? More like you are the ones bombing them back to the stone age . Shame there is no stonning for stupidity.

No, it implies looking after your body and showing a bit of respect towards yourself. Just because Western teenagers enjoy accidentally getting pregnant and like to screw everything that moves when they get the opportunity doesn't mean everyone should follow suit. Sometimes I wish the law would come in here because then I wouldn't have to worry about my 2 daughters coming home and telling me they may be pregnant at 15-16 years old in a few years time.

I did not read every post in this thread.
Could some one tell me, or point me to the place where it explains what the source article means when it says it would also be illegal for couples living together to have sex? Since the title says unmarried people having sex saying it is illegal for couples to have sex seems to be a contradiction in terms.

That's exactly how Christian Fundamentalism feels about premarital sex.
Is there no room in the Western World for them either?

The difference your missing here is while its frowned upon by some here, there it is law forced upon you by your own country. BIG difference.

And as much as i disagree with religious fundamentalists and their anti sex stance, its is of course their right to express their opinion.

That is your opinion, and one which I happen to agree with- BUT, it moves against freedom when you enact a law to bring your and mine views on such issues to everyone in the country- that inherently attacks freedom

good luck with finding a western country, under the influence of Christian fundamentalism, bringing in such a law

This is harsher than Sharia law, I believe. The Koran does not forbid sexual intercourse with slaves or with prostitutes, unless I am mistaken.

In my opinion the state shouldn't be meddling in this area. Legislating sexual morality is a fool's errand in my opinion.

Exactly, its mostly Muslims from what I understand.

Fornication isn't even one of the ten commandments.

There are even rules and guidelines on how to engage in the behavior in the Old Testament without falling into condemnation.

Last time I checked the Muslims accept some of the books from the Old Testament as scripture.

This makes no sense, even from a religious perspective.

Adultery is one of the commandments, fornication is not.

I took it to mean that common law couples, better not visit, unless they remain in separate rooms and avoid sex

Commonlaw marriage is legal in Canada, it's even on income tax forms, medical forms, etc

Over 16% of Canadian couples live in a Commonlaw marriage.

This law is simply flat out immoral, no other way to see it, forcing ones
view on everyone else is just plain wrong, im glad they are terrified of
sexuality and wish to live repressed lives with someone guiding them
every step of the way but i would rather choose my own way in life, i would
rather choose actual morality where in i do not impose my will on others
because i feel shame for something i have done or have been told
is immoral just because a book says so...... this type of law is immoral,
no question about it, freedom is the only true morality, being free to
live life as you choose so long as you don't hurt anyone else by
doing so.

A humans right to commit natural acts should never be infringed upon,
sex to many is shameful but that's not enough to allow them to dictate
what consenting adults do, its their business.

This is yet another step back by the progress of Indonesia, They have the tendency to take one step forward then two steps back in what they decide. They already outlawed masturbation and blocked all pornography websites.

Living in Jakarta myself when i walk down the street i see people breaking every Islamic law and doing/eating/drinking what is considered haram. These political idiots like to target the western and Chinese community to make examples of them. They do NOTHING to their fellow Muslims. Least we forget about the riots and how the Indonesian people raped, murdered and tortured the Chinese and Westerners and we're never held accountable for their actions. That was acceptable but sex before being married isn't. What a joke.

I'm a little worried about this since i myself am British living here and my girlfriend is Chinese, We will be targeted if this new law passes. Especially because we're both Christian too.

This country has such potential if only it wasn't run by corrupt leadership imposing such ridiculous laws.

PS - For everyone saying this is a Muslim country it's not. Indonesia isn't recognized (Especially by most Indonesians) as a Muslim country, It just houses the largest Muslim population in the world. Indonesians see their country as a country of many religions. Funny how they seem to only impose Islamic laws though.

Cohabitation has been illegal in Indonesia as long as I can remember, this is nothing new and it is not generally enforced by the Police. I have never heard of anyone ever being prosecuted under this law.

Corby had more than a bag full when she got busted in Bali customs, she had a surfboard stuffed full of it, she knew exactly what she was doing and how severe the penalties were so tuff titty.

The boy and the cow sex case was in Bali which is 90% Hindu, so had nothing to do with Islam.

Indonesia is one of the most easy going countries I know where civil liberties are concerned, there is none of that TSA bullsh!t at domestic airports, no X-ray screening, no pat downs, nothing. You can also demonstrate without fear of the police kicking the sh!t out of you

PEACE,
RK
