Is this Cyprus trying to blackmail Europe into providing more help?

Europe is against this.

Is that because of the extensive Gas fields around the island, which if Cyprus gets more Russian help may come under control of Russia?

Or even the whole island might become a part of the Russian state?.

So what would be the US view of a permanent Russian aircraft carrier in the Med, especially in view of the current middle east problems?

Cyprus isn't going to become part of the Russian state..sell gas rights maybe but this doesn't make them a part of Russia.....

Turkey is a big country when they are looking at Israel. They aren't so big or special if they are looking North at Russia. I'm not sure why folks figure Russia is a lesser nation. They've been putting a very strong effort into modernizing and updating everything they've got for military for quite some time now.

It's not really that sort of thing anyway though, as you note. Russia just wants to bail them out and get financial hooks into them. For Cyprus, it's probably the better choice. Russia isn't giving anything for free, anymore than the US ever does ...but they aren't going to simply rob their savings and tell them to suck it up and deal with it. The EU went WAYY over the line with that attempted bank robbery of an entire population, IMO. It would serve them right to see Russia get some serious influence there. It might even be a stabilizing force, considering how screwed up things have gotten. (can't believe Russia would ever look like a force to bring stability.... the world is mad)

It will do nothing. Afterall ... the USA has practically become part of China financially.
Administration after administration let it happen .... pushed it along to happen.
So why should we do anything about Cyprus becoming part of Russia this way?

You have to understand Cyprus and Greeks in general terminally hate Germany. They screwed them in WWII. Now they are trying to screw them monetarily. I heard the monks at Mt. Athos gave Putin the green light for war last year.

America will just sit back and chill, as usual and let the cypriot voters make their own choice to either enjoy progress or pay for conquences if its leaders refuses to abide by international rule of law and standards, economic stability and peace.

Like Stalin, he will not live forever, nor his legacy of crony corruption. Russian masses themselves will not stand for it, and the dam will break one day, as it had in China with its leaders scrambling on all fours now to contain it. At least the CCP govt woke up.

Tyrant Putin is still in la-la land, dreaming his oil wealth will sustain his power just like Hugo Chavez when the reality of energy needs is that its price will drop as more nations discover gas deposits and new energy resources daily. When that happens, how will he pay for the sycophants in the bureacracy, just like the thankfully dead economic Mismanager Chaves of a bloated civil service?

A more pertinent question would be what would the UK do if (southern) Cyprus became part of the Russia federation as they have a military base and about 3500 troops based there.

Pissed off most probably the answer.

Our bases on Cyprus are too much of an asset for us to withdraw just because a few Russian warships turn up, but if this was true and Russia were asking for this you can bet the UK government would be asking for things themselves, in addition to a few threats probably.
Also, despite the bad press British troops get out there you can't under estimate the positive impact on the local economy it has having them there.

UK will be MORE than happy to withdraw its troops and bases on that small island if it surrenders its sovereignity to Russia, more so with PM Cameron's Austerity drive. The bases are already worth less with depreciation in the books, and will only cost more if to maintain it.

Plenty more of other bases in Europe to share amongst allies if he wants.

It's their choice. Philippines too booted out its US base there in subic bay, and lived to regret it today as it faces China over its claims on disputed islands. The previous Japanese govt supported the Okinawans call to dismantle the US base there, but today, its new govt desperately wants USA to remain in its same plight as the Filipinoes. Vietnam welcomes US ships to Cam Ranh Bay today, after booting US out in '75, under the same situation with Japan and Philippines.
