For a SMS text message all it needs to store is date/time, from, to, message and maybe some other info like which base stations it was sent from and transmitted to which will probably be around 1-2kb of data so a data center with halls full of 3-4 tb drives would be able to hover up stupid numbers of texts and with the use of automated tape archives to free space from the messages like "whats for tea?" while still having them available but at that size its more of a pain to archive than it is to keep the data online as the index record to point what tape its on is bigger than the actual data

actually indexing the data will take up more space than the record itself as it would need to create an index on every detail so a simple 2k message could use up 10-20 times the space for the index

NO, it shouldn't.

never believed i'd say this but ... i sure do miss 'Ma Bell'.
it wasn't so long ago that one could be prosecuted & punished for using a butt-in for purposes other than repair.
remember these?

messing with one's 'mail' was deemed a felony and privacy was a most valued and protected 'right' of the people.
