and dressing up and flipping the bird can hardly be considered extreme, whether in your own eyes or someone else's

I'm not "dressing up." I dress like that regularly. I meant "extreme" as in compared to my other profile picture, obviously.

i'm trying hard not to be mean - infact i am just being direct, but there is an awesome life lesson in here.

That all depends on who sees the photo. I've only got two profile pics, and one of them is me, smiling, looking relaxed and BARELY goth. In fact, I've used that pic as my profile pic on ATS.

My other pic is meant to be more extreme.

Seems like too many people are reading into the "Oh, she's wearing spikes and flipping the bird, she's a damn devil worshiping child" assumptions. Seriously?

I'm not supposed to judge the borderline-porn popping up on my facebook, but my profile picture is offensive?

Get over it.

The thing is, people don't see it as "Oh, she's wearing spikes and flipping the bird, she's a devil worshiping child" at all. That may be what you want them to see, but it's not what goes through their minds.
What they really see is "looks like another childish juvenile trying to make a statement but doesn't know what statement they're trying to make. Hopefully she'll grow out of it.... soon"

They aren't shocked or disturbed, they actually laugh at it and remember their own days of trying to be "different" and how foolish they were at the time. They just roll their eyes at you and dismiss you and any opinion you may have because not only are you a child, you present yourself as a child and the things you think or say really have no merit due to that.

If you want to be taken seriously, stop trying to put on a facade, stop trying to fit into some "goth culture" and be yourself. Don't wear things or style your hair because they make you look a certain way, wear clothes that you are comfortable in, style your hair in a way that isn't annoying to you. Be yourself, not some "goth icon" that part of you wants to be like because you think it will take pain away or make people see you in a certain way. (of course you'll now say "but that is what I'm comfortable in" even though that's a complete lie that you tell yourself)

Don't worry about what other people see, either good or bad. Don't try to "shock" them, don't try to "impress" them, be who you want to be but don't choose something just because you think it may affect other people in some way either in their opinion or their reaction. When you come to that realization, you will be on the road to growing up and becoming a real person instead of just a teenager who falls into some category due to your conforming to that category.

The REAL "rebels", the REAL people who "stand out and make a difference" don't do so by their physical appearance or by trying to go for shock value, they do so by their actions, by their commitment, by who they work to become. Not by actually conforming to something while saying they are non-conformists even though they're conforming and negating their own efforts

You're not doing anything differently than what others have already done and grown out of as they matured. After you grow out of it, others will do the same thing you're doing now, they'll conform to the "non-conformist" ideas just like you did. You're no different from those who came before you and you're no different from those who will come after you. Why not stand up and actually BE different instead of just trying to LOOK different? Much more productive and beneficial to you anyway....

Yeah, I remember when I was 19. I did some pretty stupid things, thinking I was so cool. That was a long time ago. You know you're part of the older generation when you look at what the kids are doing now, and you just don't get it. Boys wearing their pants so low that they can hardly walk .... what the hell?!? Girls wearing their "I'm a little whore" clothes .... yikes!

My daughter is 11 yrs. old. I'm really not looking forward to the teen years. sigh.

Sounds like what you think. Doesn't mean everyone else does. Some people probrably do, but... whatever.

I don't care. I'm not trying to "stick out," I'm just keeping myself untouchable. I want people to know I'm not a pushover, and not someone who can be taken advantage of. And it works wonders.

I don't care about the subculture. I care about looking, acting, and being untouchable.

Who says I don't?

Just wanted to rant, get it out of my system, and get lots of perspectives. Now that I've done that, then yeah... I guess I'm done.

I know I ain't done with life lessons yet. Nobody ever is.
