MRI proves differences between Republican and Democrat brain
Brain Scan May Unlock Candidates' Appeal
Two scientists at UCLA are using brain scans to determine how the minds of Republicans differ from those of Democrats.

Last month, Dr. Joshua Freedman and Dr. Marco Iocaboni used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to monitor brain activity of 10 Democrats and 10 Republicans while showing the subjects images of President Bush, John Kerry, and Ralph Nader.

The results showed dramatic activity increases in the region of the brain indicating the feeling of empathy when either group was shown their favorite presidential candidate. When photographs of the opposing candidate were presented, the subjects brain, regardless of party, responded with the portion of the brain that asserts control over emotion. Drs. Freedman and Iocaboni suggest that from this evidence, it seems the subjects were trying to actively dislike their candidates opponent.

From the title, I thought it was going to be a joke post but it was actually a little interesting.

From the ABC link:

Nonetheless, some differences appeared between the brain activity of Democrats and Republicans. Take empathy: One Democrat's brain lit up at an image of Kerry "with a profound sense of connection, like a beautiful sunset," Freedman said. Brain activity in a Republican shown an image of Bush was "more interpersonal, such as if you smiled at someone and they smiled back."

And when voters were shown a Bush ad that included images of the Sept. 11 attacks, the amygdala region of the brain which lights up for most of us when we see snakes illuminated more for Democrats than Republicans. The researchers' conclusion: At a subconscious level, Republicans were apparently not as bothered by what Democrats found alarming.
