N. Korea likely to provoke South this year: think tank

North Korea is likely to launch a provocative attack on South Korea this year, a top analyst said Thursday at the launch of his think tank's annual report on the world's military capabilities.

The International Institute for Strategic Studies said North Korea's "military first" doctrine remained clearly intact under youthful leader Kim Jong-Un.

Mark Fitzpatrick, director of the London-based IISS's non-proliferation and disarmament program, said world powers were increasingly concerned about the threat emanating from Pyongyang.

"North Korea presents a significant threat because it has ballistic missiles that can hit Japan and all of Korea," he told AFP.

"It has nuclear devices that it may or may not be able to put on the warheads of those missiles.

"It combines that with a rhetoric that has exceeded all dimensions and a propensity to fire first."

While firing first in the next few weeks would be "dangerous" due to the ongoing US-South Korea joint military exercises, "over the course of the year, most analysts do think that North Korea will follow through with some sort of provocation," said Fitzpatrick.

He said the risk of escalation from there was "serious" because South Korea feels the need to establish deterrence credibility.

The next time North Korea attacks, "it's pretty clear that South Korea is going to respond... and where it goes from there is anyone's guess."

However, North Korea would probably not want to trigger a fully-fledged war because it would inevitably mean the end of their regime due to the huge advantage held by South Korea and the United States.

North Korea confirmed Wednesday that it had shredded the 60-year-old armistice ending the Korean War, and warned that the next step was an act of "merciless" military retaliation against its enemies.

Military tensions on the Korean peninsula are at their highest level for years.
they just flexing and seeing how will react. keep watching something will give.

This maybe an ignorant comment, but wouldn't L'il UN's people start to see all his empty threats.
He say's he's going to do this and that, yet nothing happens.
Won't he start looking weak to his people and military?

His people are busy starving to death and trying not to appear unpatriotic. If anyone even suspected the average North Korean of not loving the regime? That person would not last long.

not when this is what they , the people are told,

Grave Situation Resulting from Aggressive Moves against DPRK

Some time ago the United States prodded the UN Security Council to fabricate another brigandish and illegal "sanction resolution", making an issue of the 3rd underground nuclear test of the DPRK.

Regarding the military offensive and more intensive "sanction" as a main way to hurt us, the United States is ever intensifying threat and pressure against us while justifying their outrageous hostile acts.

The United States and its followers concocted another "sanction resolution", tantamount to a declaration of war against us, thus leading the situation on the Korean peninsula to the touch-and-go phase. This grave situation produced by the hostile forces against the DPRK give rise to a surging indignation of our nation and the progressives of the world who aspire after peace and détente on the peninsula.

The recent "resolution" is a hard outcome of the US hostile policy against the DPRK to disarm and economically suffocate us and thus to pull down the ideology and system chosen by our people.

The "sanction" on the DPRK is a dangerous provocation to unleash a new war on the Korean peninsula at any cost.

The "sanction" is, in fact, an open declaration of war against us, as a kind of war act.

The United States and the south Korean puppets are making every possible effort to deliberately aggravate the situation on the peninsula and lead it to the outbreak of a nuclear war to invade the north.

The United States is repeating the history of crime-woven aggression on the Korean peninsula.

The U.S. imperialists and the south Korean war-like elements are miscalculating. If they encroach on our sovereignty slightly under the pretext of the "sanction", it will be a historic moment when our army and people with a firm determination to wipe out the enemies will certainly settle accounts with the United States and display unquenchable war deterrence to the full. Our all-out action in which Korean-style method of war and the powerful strike means unknown to the world are to be employed will sweep away the internal and external warmongers hell bent on war provocation on this land to the last one.

The final victory is in store for our army and people led by Kim Jong Un, heaven-born great man and illustrious commander of Songun.

Ho Yong Min
and this is their belief, so it goes on and on and on. the above is from www.rodong.rep.kp...

In regimes like the DPRK, the public only see's what their leaders want them to see unfortunately. Grant it, they try that in the west, but NK is able to utilize the threat of violence to support the fabricated truth or denial of it.

Ok, second ignorant question

So won't his military see his weakness, or is he just a mouth piece for the military.

Mouthpiece isn't exactly correct. He's more like a spokesperson / mascot. Without him, the military is still in power. Without the military he's dead in seconds.

Thanks Heff, I'm starting to get how it works over there now.
I think there is only so much weight they can throw around, before someone say's that's it, and puts him in the naughty corner for good.

If true, it's not anything that doesn't fit the typical behavior pattern for NoKo. This is all about Lil' Kim building street cred in his own hood. His grandfather did it, his daddy did it, and now he's got to play the role.

Yep, I said it before, he is looking for a little respect.
