Who wants to make a wager with me? I wager that within 5-10 years the U.N. finds evidence of weapons of mass destruction or weapons grade uranium being enriched cloak and dagger style in the Australian outback!!!

*giggle*

Fair enough RE: the stereotypical joke.

The play that is going on with China and Russa vs the petrodollar....that is interesting to see. They are from within the global mafia. Not the same as Iran, Iraq, and Libya. That is a play that is meant to do something. I just don't know what.

Okay, apparently no one is taking what I'm saying seriously. So I will reiterate one last time all the points I've tried to make thus far.

1. Oil and gas exploration around the world does not automatically mean America will invade that country. There are plenty of countries that find O&G all the time and the U.S. doesn't give them a second thought. The O&G companies themselves might show interest as long as it already fits into their yearly fiscal plans and their logistical infrastructure. Typically the largest offshore oil producers show little to no interest in finds on land. They have far too much time and money invested in going deeper and deeper offshore. It really is a pissing contest between these companies to see who can find the biggest, deepest and furthest out offshore claims. Most of the companies that survey and explore on land are much smaller companies, some are even still considered mom & pop in relative terms when compared to the major O&G players in deep water.

2. Oil companies themselves do not hoard oil and gas, and they do not typically sit on claims any longer than they have to. There is no money to be made by a corporation by simply finding the stuff, it has to be extracted and refined into useable product before a profit is seen (directly by the oil companies themselves). Governments who buy crude stockpile and set up reserves. Though the oil companies and the government are often "in bed together", do not confuse their agendas, which are separate. Oil companies want to turn profits, plain and simple, and they don't take orders from the government even if they were told to hold back for any reason. For the U.S. government or any other to stockpile it is forced to first purchase the oil from the companies and then put it in reserves itself.

3. I admit I know much less about government agendas than I do about oil agendas, but logically I couldn't see the U.S. invading any country which will willingly sell its oil & gas. The opposite is true. The government is much more likely to give incentives to Australia for their cooperation with American based oil companies. And like I said before, there is a huge difference between companies like Chevron, Exxon, BP and Shell, and companies like Halliburton, Schlumberger and Tesco. The actual oil companies that I listed above are much more interested in their current investments offshore, all over the world, at least at this point in time. It is much easier for them to allow the smaller land-based companies to do most of the work in exploration and setting up the claims and then just buying them out once all the labor is preformed and the profits roll in. This happens quite often.

4. Don't confuse oil companies and service companies. Halliburton DOES NOT produce oil, they have no claims, they could care less about the price of gas or a barrel of crude. There are three major types of companies in the O&G industry (aside from transportation and support). These are the oil companies themselves, the drilling companies, and the services companies. When you walk on a rig there are reps from all three types of companies there. The oil company only maintains a handful of people on any given sight as their rep, this is called the company man, and occasionally they also have petroleum engineers on site if it is required. Then there is the drilling companies; Transocean, Diamond, Noble (to name a few offshore drillers), actually own and operate the drilling rig and all its mechanisms. These guys put holes in the ground, that's it. Service companies do everything under the sun that falls in between exploration, production and drilling. From drilling mud and cementing to wireline and coil tubing, service companies offer what their name implies, various services. Companies like Halliburton have literally hundreds of separate divisions that all do different, specialized tasks associated with drilling and production. These are the companies that Australia is most likely to not only encounter en mass, but also become employed by.

There are many subjects I'm not so knowledgeable about, but on this topic I know more than the average person. I hope that I cleared up any misconceptions anyone might have about how things work from the oil companies perspective. They really only care about the money, for them the only agenda is making money, not going to war or stockpiling, that is the governments agenda.

As for your question about what kind of impact it will have on the area I think I might be able to chime in here as well, as I have traveled to other places in my career and I've seen both positive and negative impacts develop.

I'll start with the most pressing issues, environmental and economic impacts.

Environment
This depends largely on the type of exploration and the type of drilling that is to be conducted. For every case of something going wrong (busted pipelines or fracking gone awry), there are thousands and thousands of cases where the environment wasn't directly affected in any detrimental manner. What happened in Wyoming was an atrocity committed by a company that didn't follow the standards and procedures that are clearly defined by not only the government and the EPA but by the O&G companies themselves. I can tell you from experience that more often than not the policies of the Oil companies are even more strict than those of the EPA or government regulators. This is so that the O&G companies can avoid penalties and fines and loss of time in drilling and production. Like I said before, it really is all about the money for these corporations and anytime they lose money for incidents that could have been avoided they usually go off like a ton of TNT. They really do hate to lose money, and damage to the environment makes them lose money. So yes they care, albeit many times for the wrong reasons, but the end result is the same. They don't want environmental incidents any more than anyone else does.

Economic
I have personally witnessed backwater towns where the average yearly gross income was $20,000 triple in size within the first year and that average income also triple. I make no qualms about it, I am very well paid in comparison to the average American, and my comfortable salary is going to double in the next two years when I finish my degree. That will put me making more than your average M.D. who has spent much more time in school than I have. In fact I'm not embarrassed to say that I only have a 10th grade education, never completed high school, got my GED and am able to pay for the further education all out of my own pocket without any government aid or student loans. This is only possible because of the time and effort I have put into the O&G industry. While many people may demonize what I do, they do not realize that without this industry my options would be very limited. My children would not be receiving the education that they are, and I would most likely need assistance from the government like many other people do. I have experienced first hand a gracious thank you for the training I provided to one man because his income had doubled by receiving an entry level job in the oilfield, while his neighbors, family and friends all threw garbage at my vehicle because we had placed an oil well in the middle of the woods. Not to mention that the well allowed the land owners to collect royalty checks that afforded them the opportunity to send their only child to college.

In summary, it is the responsibility of the workers to ensure that environmental policies are upheld to the highest possible standard and that the surrounding ecosystem and communities are not affected in any negative way. If this is done then the economic impacts of oil & gas exploration, drilling, servicing and production can be extremely beneficial to the local populace and its communities.

I knew before I clicked that this thread would be chock full of America haters saying we would invade over some bogus claim of WMD, but look kiddies, Obama didn't invade Brazil for their oil, he just sent over our tax dollars to prop up their nationalized oil co. Petrobas.

Booboo has his own bizarre little scenario involving propping up socialist govts and systems.

Thank you sir for your educated input into this conversation, I appreciate you bringing some kind of well needed discussion to the thread. As far as I can see this project is still a ways away in terms of an actual start up time, and I am hopeful this awesome place will not be destroyed in some unfashionable manner like what happened with Wyoming and other awful "Mishaps", also I would like to add that I hope that the money these people get wont be wasted on big business enterprises trying to capitalize on the boom that will eventually occur. Stars for your posts my friend and welcome to ATS.

with the horror that most Americans show at the local fauna in West Texas (rattlers, scorpions, spiders, coyotes, hogs, etc, etc), I doubt many care to know where Australia is.

We have some rough critters here. You guys just have insanity there. I mean, with spiders that can not only bit through a boot, but also kill you....yeah. Ill take our scorpions any day.

Yep.
They are even risking the Great Barrier Reef's heritage status ; to run a pipeline out of Gladdy, feeding gas to an outer island for easier international access.

Have you heard the ads on radio (Not sure if they are on tv) with Darren Lockyer saying how great CSG is? I was so annoyed when I heard it. The masses need a person they recognise telling them whats good and what's not. Sadly, I'm guessing many ignorant QLDers hear Darren say it's good and think 'it must be!'

I live here in South Australia ,we have over a trillion dollars in uranium and copper at olympic dam as well.We waited for 10 years and were told by BHP ,they were going to build the biggest mine ,in southern hemispere.(after the Anaconda in Chile)
Then early this year they pulled out as it was too expensive ,(after spend 240 million on research) and they don't have the technolgy devoloped to get at it.
So when I heard the about the story of oil in them thar basin.it sounded like someone selling me more magic beans .
I think Barry can get the Marines to stand down for now.Anyway that was in Darwin and they were used to showcase military equipment to the military from southeast asian countries .

"There has been too much violence. Too much pain. But I have an honorable compromise. Just walk away. Give me your pump, the oil, the gasoline, and the whole compound, and I'll spare your lives. Just walk away and we'll give you a safe passageway in the wastelands. Just walk away and there will be an end to the horror."
