Just a thought here... How about the GOVERNMENT employ the required scientists and staff, and get the important work done on thier own schedule, rather than waiting for pigs to fly and big business to actually move on these issues?

And what happens when the oil runs out? Is corporate regulation or deregulation going to fix that?

"Well, the free market system will introduce new energy technologies."

So what? Your entire society is built around oil, not just in the aspect of energy consumption. Almost everything you own is either made of or transported to you with oil. The whole of modern western civilization exists due to the extraction (with conscripted labor, of course) and consumption of a non-renewable resource.

It's going to collapse. There is no political solution. Let's stop playing by their rules. In fact, let's not even play their game. That's the first step in "fixing things"--a complete refusal of playing it their way.
