Warning shots were fired by South Korean ships in response to a violation of the border by North Korean ships. Three North Korean ships breached the border near the islands Yeonpyeong Island and stayed for 83 minutes.

story.news.yahoo.com
SEOUL (AFP) - South Korean naval ships fired warning shots to drive away North Korean vessels violating their border in the Yellow Sea, the joint chiefs of staff (JCS) office said.

Three North Korean patrol boats intruded into southern waters near Yeonpyeong Island at 10:54 am (0154 GMT) despite radio warnings, the office said. It said the boats sailed back only after the warning shots were fired.

The border breach lasted 83 minutes and the standoff ended without casualties, the office said.

"Our navy ships fired 10 rounds of shells in warning shots to drive away those North Korean boats violating the NLL (Northern Limit Line) sea border," said a JCS official who identified himself as Major Lee.

"They retreated. There were no casualties."

The JCS said the North Korean boats repeatedly intruded into South Korean waters up to 2.7 miles (4.3 kilometers) south of the NLL, the maritime border between the two sides since the 1950-1953 war.

The boats only returned after the shots were fired. Ten rounds were fired, but no casualties were reported. The North Korean government denied the event took place. They claimed the boats wee there inspecting Chinese fishing boats. South Korea confirmed the presence of the fishing boats, but maintained the violation of the border. North Korea has refused to recognized the border that has been in place since the armistice.

"Nothing to see here, move along..."

At least there's some kind of respect going on. They did withdrawl, hinting that they are not desperate to start a war (without the offical go-ahead anyway).

I was there, about four years ago, the last time something like that happened. I even got a ribbon for it! I was in 2ID stationed at Uijongbu at the time. We were put on high alert and mobilized for war, like we always did, but eventually everything calmed down and we went back home to the base. Hopefully, the same outcome will occur.

This happens quite often, I think.
It was probably just "friendly" warning shots...

"Just checking..."

Maybe they were just checking the speed and the way of the reaction. After the South Korean shps greeted them, they returned home.
Any North Korean soldier would be executed or sent to "re-education" camps for disobeying orders and loosing a ship (even small patrol boat) in such a foolish way..

Ohh.. and don't forget, the North Korean commando units/spies regularly infiltrate South Korea. Mini-submarines and small boats are the way to transport them.

From www.macon.com: N. Korea Criticizes S. Korea Over Shots

North Korea's navy criticized South Korea Tuesday for firing warning shots to ward off one of its patrol boats, calling the action a "grave military provocation."
