Here is my 2 cents

I think people who are born or become handicap / disabled are that way for a reason.

I believe in re-incarnation, and in each carnation it is your task to learn certain lessons, as you learn you progress.

I think that people who have it easy and have perfect lives are in the lower grades and are learning very easy lessons.

I think people who have very difficult lives are in the higher grades or graduate classes, and are learning very difficult lessons.

So the reason a person is born mentally / physically handicap or disabled is because they are learning some very difficult life lessons, like loss of independence, overcoming difficult situations, people wanting to euthanize you ,and such.

The people that are taking care of them are learning lessons on compassion and caring for others.

Did you ever see the movie the Elephant Man, well that guy seemed like a pretty enlightened person to me.

This is just my opinion, I cannot prove it or anything, but it seems to make sense to me.

When I see a handicap or disabled person, I do not pity them or feel sorry for them.

Interesting post. I have a friend (and her mom, too) who feel this way. They are Buddhists. The path to enlightenment is constantly going through reincarnation to learn from mistakes, to correct them, and to move on until you become complete.

Become a father. Watch your child grow. Lose sleep for years because you worry about his/her future.

Then come back to this thread.

You might not recognize your own posts.

Truly I can say you await the return of the Dark Ages and the ancient civilisations of Rome, Greece , Babylon and Egypt whereby those deemed unfit were simply sacrificed. Go the way of Cain and you arrogantly ask "Am I my brother's keeper?"

Your thoughts are no higher than a beast which kills the injured and elderly in its group.
You seem to have rejected completely the difference of conscience which Our Creator gave man and expected him to rule by. This is the way the world is going, listening to its "heart and emotions" which lead it to overrule conscience, His commands and critical skeptical thinking. You think no higher than a mere beast and somehow cannot yet ascertain that you hold this horrific Talmudic view like every new ager which believes that man is no higher than a parasite.

Jesus Christ told the world that the thief comes to kill and destroy. I can see how - instead of taking care of the oppressed and helpless (orphans and widows) it simply kills the oppressed and helpless. This is the nature of unregenerated man and his continually wicked heart. So tragic that the world chooses the thief and crucifies the Truth.

In the best interests of these unfortunate individuals, their parents in the long run, and the species as a whole, that these individuals should be euthanized as soon as it is determined that the situation can not be corrected by medical means.

The evidence suggests that "defectives" are part of a natural and essential evolutionary process - yet you recommend blocking the adaptive process and imposing standards of 'normalcy' that have no future in our now-modified world. Not logical.

My wife and I were told by 2 doctors that our child would be born with spinabifida or some other abnormality. The doctor literally cried and told us to abort her. We told him that we did not believe in abortion and would take whatever we got. This was all based on an RH factor test. It came out high they said. They said it was for certain that she would be born deformed. This was from a specialist. Long story short, she came out perfect and i am now a grandfather.

Aside from science not being perfect and making mistakes like that. I have to wonder what the world would be like if we did not have these imperfect children to teach us unconditional love, compassion and patience.

Amen to that my fellow bunny.

Having those little bunnies changes everything for thinking on many matters, doesn't it? There was a time in my life when I was far colder and far more mercenary that I may have even seen logic in the OP's words. Oh it's nice to look back on some periods of life as past tense, isn't it?

I could never, for a moment, look at my Son and consider if it may have been better had he not lived. That's just so horrible a thought consider, it has no place to exist. As a parent, I couldn't imagine any fellow parent feeling that much different, either.

What is defective? How does one define someones contribution to society? How do we define "happy"?

I've worked in the past with "disabled" people...and discovered that "disabled" doesn't mean much when confronted by courage, and perseverance.

What's happy? What's a sufficient amount of contribution? Who defines these things?

That is a very good question that I have not really thought through.

If nothing else, I am very practical. So yes, I think I would find some way to end my parents frustration and confusion in the least painful way possible.

A pillow in their sleep comes to mind.

What about all the useless overweight people, or the ones who suffer from addictions? How about the slow kids? You know. The ones who are not outright killable for being autistic or mentally retarded, but just kinda slow? Oh, and hey, how about the people who are blind or handicapped in other ways? Surely, they could be "spared" their lives of suffering as well.

You said you had not really "thought it through." I'd agree with that.

Maybe you could do that now, and get back with us, because the biggest "defective" thing in this whole thread so far is your reasoning... and humanity.
edit on 8-3-2013 by JustSlowlyBackAway because: (no reason given)

The "Not thought it through" statement was regarding my parents, if they develop Alzheimer's.

Being overweight is a self inflicted condition that can be corrected. But if they become unable to attend to themselves they should be left to fend for themselves. The slow ones can hired clean up the resulting mess.

I have no patience for those who develop degenerative addictions that become a nuisance to society, they can be dealt with accordingly if they commit any crimes.

Being blind or deaf can be corrected these days.

I was being facetious. I think it might have been lost on you.

The point is, everyone has life challenges. Everyone has great worth. Even those who are dealing with severe problems are living a precious life. How we all deal with each other, perfect or imperfect, is a good measure of our own humanity and kindness.

How would you propose to the parents of a child diagnosed with autism that they needed to give him over for the common good? The disturbing thing about all this to me is that you are even considering any of this. I have concerns for your capacity for compassion and empathy. To my mind, this is a condition that is far more dangerous and damaging to our society than being autistic. Please tell me you are not considering running for political office.

I'm going to make this short.

It's always easier to talk the talk, but walking the walk may become difficult when you have your own child one day who may have the same disability that you are speaking of in the op. *God works in mysterious ways*

I hope you raise a healthy and happy child some day, but if it doesn't go as planned you would understand why.

Exercise Compassion *our greatest evolutionary leap*

Every being has the right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness and Not only in America.

That's exactly what I was getting at!

There are so many gray areas with Op's theory. I fear it would be a dangerous path, if something like that would ever be implemented.

I understand where your coming from with this. After all how can a child with locked in syndrome be happy?
But as you get older and wiser you realise life is not black and white. If only it were that simple!
And it does smack of nazism. Doesnt it?

No, not euthanize, sterilize. All people should have an IQ test before puberty. Those with low IQs should be sterilized. Those with genetic defects should be sterilized. The only people you take out are the bullies. They grow up to be criminals, marines and cops. We can do with less bullies. They do not deserve to live. But those with birth defects should be allowed a long, happy life. They just should not ever breed. Stupid people should never breed. It is for the good of the species.

I do not hate you but I hate your mind as it is so horrid I can only imagine how evil you must be.

Just so you know, I do not agree with the premise of euthanizing , I was making conversation about it. If you were singling me out?

But its okay to hate people too, I guess.

Now we're talking!
All you morons with less than 150 IQ need to do your duty for the betterment of the human race and take yourselves out of the gene pool!

Yep.
You can get snipped willingly or if you prefer to do it the hard way, well, that can be arranged.

As a child, Einstein seldom spoke. When he did, he spoke very slowly - indeed, he tried out entire sentences in his head (or muttered them under his breath) until he got them right before he spoke aloud. According to accounts, Einstein did this until he was nine years old. Einstein's parents were fearful that he was retarded - of course, their fear was completely unfounded!

It's fairly cetain ole Albert was autistic.
You may want to go back to page 2 and see My Post listing his name among others as influential autistic people. I also strongly recommend watching at least one of the videos on Carly Fleischmann. That girl is a wonderfully astounding inspiration.

She processes her school homework in parallel doing homework on 3 or 4 different subjects simultaneously on 3 or 4 different laptops, or ipads (not in any of the videos).
She's absolutely brilliant and still just a teenager.
