A 106-year-old Massachusetts man who had to drop out of school before the ninth grade to support his mother and five siblings has finally earned his high school diploma.

Fred Butler was awarded his honorary diploma Monday during an emotional ceremony attended by school officials and Beverly Mayor Bill Scanlon.

Butler thanked "everybody who is responsible for this."

The lack of diploma did not hold him back.

Pretty amazing

After all he accomplished, he still went back

Not sure I would have

My Granny had about a 3rd grade education and she was the finest woman on the planet. While I value education, it is certainly not the end all

I'll bet he learned a whole lot more in those 9 years back then than kids learn in 12 years today. Someone posted a test from the early part of the century recently for middle school or something that would baffle many college grads even today (not that a college degree is much of an accompishment either).

I'll bet he had to act extra stupid to earn the diploma based on today's standards.

ETA: found the test: Dumbing down the population?!! See if you can pass this 8th grade test from 1895

Just reading the questions made my head hurt.

Seriously, like who is like the oldest person to live and still learn without Alzheimer's taking over?

I'm flabbergasted.

Alzheimer's disease is not an normal part of aging my dear...

This is an amazing story though...
