This is about the top 100, the 1%, of EXTREME wealth, earning £100+billions per YEAR, whilst their companies typically outsource to China etc for a pittance, their middle income workers are just scraping middle class and glad to have their job, probably making daily sacrifices in the name of commuting and minimal home / family / quality time, they are the aspiration for the lower workers probably scraping by, glad to be in work at all, possibly in debt, struggling with their bills and living pay check to pay check, again probably sacrificing quality family time / scared about losing their precious job. Then there are the lowest ranking workers, the outsourced unhappy labour, child / forced or otherwise, working impossibly long hours in inhumane conditions, the kind of workers that we occasionally hear about sending messages in firecrackers about how they are forced to work for nothing, where effective slavery is enforced by violence and other human rights atrocities. If they are paid at all they are glad for the income from their job despite the hazards, this worker group is the aspiration of those of no income.

Each strata is kept sufficiently in fear of losing their status and income so they keep treading the wheel, eager to please their 'masters' of the higher strata under whose mercy their lifestyle and family depends.

Such a sick system. It will take a major revolution or a major event to fix it. Either way such systems have been building to this for a long time, it used to be kings and aristocracy and peasants in tithe working the land, then they had their hunting rights and right to land removed, same for most colonialisation, now they are kept in virtual slavery to money and industrialisation.

It has reached a point where there is realisation.

That's my point precisely. I pretty much agree with everything you say.

What I was trying to show was that some form of mixed/welfare economy won't torpedo America, as shown by the experience of other countries.

Maybe I'm just weird, but I could care less about "wealth distribution". I am by no means wealthy. I have plenty to eat, and a nice place to live. I don't need more. The wealthy that I know personally had to work their ass off to get where they are. 60+ hour work weeks and no relationship with their family. I on the other hand work 40 hours, don't give my job a 2nd thought when I'm home, and get to spend time with my wife and daughter. I wouldn't trade that for a million dollars. On the flip side, the poor I know (which have nicer things than me, such as clothes, tvs, cable, smart phones, food budgets etc.) were the ones that never could keep a job, and goofed off back in high school. I think everyone is where they deserve to be. Deal with it.

Does the top 1% or even the top 10% hire people? Did they work as hard as the bottom 50%? I would suggest they worked harder than the bottom 70%. They now are at a point they can enjoy what they made, and people like this one wants to demonize them.

They BOZO talks about how unfair it is that the top 1% rakes in 40% of what the nation produces. But they also worked for that 40%. True some of them were born into money, some actually MADE the money. They worked 18 hours a day, 7 days a week for years to get where they are today, and this guy wants to rant and rave on how unfair it is that the 1% has so much of the money.

It's called Capitalism, where the harder you work, the more you make and the higher up the ladder you go. If you are one of the few that makes an object everyone wants, and you are able to make it for $0.02 and sell it for $19.99 and millions want it. Guess what you could move from the bottom of the pay scale to the upper middle class.

If you bitch about it, and do nothing but create a chart that shows how much the top 1% makes over the bottom 20% does not help your cause. It just shows how much of a socialist you really are.

This is what propaganda media pumps out each and everyday. This is what government schools teach nowadays. How to be a victim instead of how to be the top 1%. We have no respect in America. We have an America that can't read, can't do math, can't do any critical thinking. Because Schools no longer teach that.

The schools today, put out little propaganda books that these students have to read, take a 5 question test on it and then every year say how much better our students are performing.

I have. Not a pretty sight. They complain everyday about having to be in school with these kids. If they spend actual 4 hours a day teaching it would be something. But in that 4 hour period, they take kids to potty break about 5 times, they take them to recess twice, lunch and have snack with them. Taking up the better part of 2 hours. But complain that they are spending too much time with them. Now remember your child goes to school 7 hours a day. Now out of that 7 hours your teacher sends them to activity, for about 2 hours a day and the other time left is actual time they are at recess and lunch.

Teachers say this is their only break during the day. But wait, they have no kids for an average of 3 hours a day, and out of the remaining 4 hours they are out of the classroom going to potty, and break or other classes.

Then the actual time they do spend with the kids are putting a movie on the smart board. They say we need technology to teach better. NO!!! I disagree. Before computers kids graduated being able to read, write, do math. science, government, history. today teach to the test. If they test. There are many lower grade schools that do not test.

You have to remember, Schools are no longer a place to learn, they are just a high priced baby sitting service.
There are a few teachers who actually work, and want to teach kids. Most are there for a year round paycheck for working 9 months out of the year.

Next time you have questions about what your child does all day. Ask if you can visit your childs class. You won't, because they will not allow you to see behind the curtain. They will say it disrupts the class.

I'm probably easily in the top one per cent, and I inherited the lot so I don't really do any work.

Certainly I'd much rather be me than the teacher you describe who is always 'lazing about' taking kids on bathroom breaks.

Not every poor person is stupid. That's also true. However, if you're smart and poor, you have a much better chance of figuring out how to get out of the poor lifestyle. If you're stupid and poor, your chances are very limited and if you bring children into the world, what chance are you giving them?

Can't disagree with the first part of what you say. But I assume you're not advocating some form of eugenics?

The point is that the inequality gap makes it harder for even intelligent people in poverty. This doesn't mean they should automatically receive all kinds of handouts, just that some equal access to benefits like education might be a good idea.

That is utter nonsense. True some people do become rich, but the vast majority of people never do because their income barely meets their minimal living expenses, they can't afford an education or to relocate so they are trapped. It's called wage slavery for a reason. The system is gamed to keep a certain percentage of people at a level where they have no choice but to accept low wage jobs, or starve.its no fault of yours if you could not afford college and prevailing job markets and wages don't allow upward mobility because its now a service economy. The day where people can pull themselves put of poverty is largely over. it takes money to do that that very frw people have.That right wing myth is a dead horse that no one should waste their time beating anymore.

Yes, that video is spreading like wildfire! The question is, what does one do about it? Impose a 100% tax when net worth exceeds 1 Billion? Who, after all, needs more than 1 Billion?!

Imagine if those people were forced to fund projects like deep space exploration? A colony on Mars? Lightspeed propulsion? Cancer research? We really could make this world a much better place to live rather than squabbling with each other over a dollar while the rich get richer.

We face the same problem here in the UK and have done since 1979 when the balance of wealth was shifted from the people to the corperations (Tory Policy).... selling off the nationalised industries. Now the Tory Government expects these same corperations to supply Jobs and Wealth in a trickle down effect to the poor, but it's not working the way they planned.
The recent realisation that the peoples money they gave to bank bail outs is lost and furthermore the said banks are not lending out to businesses to encourage growth in the economy...

Our Tory Government isn't too bothered though because they only cater to the Rich...... the Poor, well they can just have the leftovers... The Tories then turn to the Middle Class who are now working harder than they have ever before and declare, "It's the poor and the disabled that are making you work harder" Next will be the Immigrant Card. Meanwhile deflecting any blame from the Rich who are busy stockpiling and they are the real Tory Taskmasters...

24.9% of the work force earning minimum wage are parents. And I don't care about College students trying to make a little extra money. I care about the single mom working 40+ hrs a week who barely makes enough money to feed and clothe her children.

I think that companies that outsource should face a huge tax penalty to the point that it would cost more then they could save.

I don't believe that spending more money on education is the answer. You can research the Kansas city school district if you're interested. They spent over a billion dollars to create some of the best schools with high paid teachers and it hasn't helped the students. (It may have helped some individual students but statistically it was a waste of money) I do think that we could change the school system so that in the eighth or ninth grade students would take a test and if you don't pass you should be provided an education geared towards learning a trade rather then pretending that you're college bound. That way for those not in the college bound group, they would have some skills when they got out of high school .

The KC story is one of corporate greed and political coruption. A quick search online bears that out. An interesting aspect of the KC story is that segregation remained after all that money was poured into the districts. Which is one of the points I made earlier. Unless students who come from poor families are given access to the same networks that upper-middle class and wealthy students have access to, the problems of poverty will never decrease.

The post I made is in reference to the Global Economics Forum report that I posted and another poster argued about this threads video being made by a ''bozo''.

I posted in reference to a quote from an article that stated this, it is a quoted statistic. Besides declared earnings of billionaires is possibly a minimalist percentage of the reality figure. I know very rich people that know of plenty of ways of legally inhabiting various places on Earth whilst having secret banking and paying minimal tax. There are loopholes and these are exploited.

I think that a great place to start in term of ending this cycle of weath inequlity would be to nationalize the energy industry...

why should private individuals, be allowed to profit off of this essential aspect of todays society? seems to me, that if you take away the profit, it would either lower the overall costs of service or increase the efficiency of the infastructure.

as it is now, the only people able to profit off this industry are the same people that are already rich...

As food, water and energy become more scarce for everyone, in the coming years and decades, wealth will need to be divided more equitably. The rich will have to take care of the poor. If they don't, they will put themselves and the whole world at risk.

Even at the level of nations: rich countries will need to share their wealth with poorer nations, for the sake of their own stability and security.

While I certainly think your goal is laudable, and god knows the energy industry is full of swines,I think the private sector is pretty vital to resources' efficient exploitation. It's much better at R&D (the tech stuff they do to drill for oil now is pretty amazing) and its hunger means that new methods and territories are discovered fast.

Of course there's some pretty huge downsides to that hunger too!
