Cannibal Cop Testimony Reveals Downward Spiral

Everyone recall this story awhile back when they made the initial arrest? This isn't about bad cops. It's about how an individual can turn bad, regardless of what they do for a living, IMO. This is a very disturbing thing to consider as actually having happened though.

MANHATTAN (CN) - NYPD officer Gilberto Valle told his arresting officer that chatting online about cannibalizing women had overtaken his life and that "he did not enjoy it and didn't know why he was doing it," an FBI agent testified Friday.

Special Agent Anthony Foto told jurors that, after he cuffed Valle, he placed his hand on the man's shoulder and told him everything would be OK.

Valle responded, "I don't think so," Foto said from the stand Friday.

It's quite a thing this touches on....

Indeed, the central issue of the trial to date is trying to distinguish whether all Valle's gruesomely detailed chats and plots to kidnap and eat women were just an extreme fantasy, as he contends, or if certain chats represented real plots to abduct, kill and cannibalize women. Investigators claim that Valle engaged in real chats with three individuals: Dale Bollinger, who wrote under the pseudonyms Christopher Collins and Moody Blues; an as-yet-unidentified man who called himself Aly Khan; and a New Jersey man named Michael Vanhise.

What bothers me at least as much as someone who went to work as a cop every day being obsessed with eating people, is that he tapped into a community of like minded people online, by the sound of it. Believe it or not, this guy was truly serious about this and apparently, so were his internet buddies.

The saying about how it takes all kinds to make the world go around? It can turn a hair slower if it means people like this aren't among us. Just my thoughts.

When I saw this I figure this guy was just nuts and not really planning on acting it out. I don't think he should be a cop as he needs some serious therapy.

If for no other reason this guy will end up serving time for improperly using a federal database to track down personal information about his intended victims- whether he really intended to kill and eat them or if it was just a fantasy produced by a sick mind. They are at least able to prove THAT.

This is the first public test case of thought crime. He has committed NO crime except bad taste and.............. writing it down.

The internet is a true godsend for the thought crime police, a sign from heaven above that thought crime is not only here to stay, but the mechanism by which all thought crime will be initiated - internet narcissism, cannot be extracted from the world due to the integration of the "connected world."

The fact that every thought, every photo, every idea is facebooked, texted, posted, blogged and on and on by an entire generation - without real thought, is the governments wet dream. The government has long wished it had the capacity to lock everyone up, but so many refuse to commit actions that constitute a crime, so they went about making millions and millions of laws, but even that was slow and effective. Enter, cannibal man, the hero of the future.............

The man will be convicted of thinking things, bad things, and were he not to have written them down, he'd be fine. But, the fact that he wrote them down, AND, they are gruesome, the jury will be implored to avoid the tiresome and frustrating world of freedom of personal thinking, and act, act now, and act hard, to show an example to all the world ----- "think wrong, go to jail."

I can see and agree with your points in other cases these days where authority is using the Internet as the ultimate Gotcha tool against citizens speaking in what they think is some discretion if not actual privacy.

In this specific case though, I have to disagree. He is mounting a serious defense at this point and what else can he do? However, his own statements at the time of his arrest show he was in a real bad spot for losing or already having lost control. I think the fact he was aware of it and still unable to stop himself speaks further to what good the methods that got him here can do.

There is that very real line between application and abuse though and I hope it's a line that is always respected . . . or more likely, simply caught quickly when crossed.

Lives may have been saved in this case though ..... and his online playmates really bother me. The end of the story mentions photos of actual mutilated bodies recovered from his computer. Medical School porn or evidence of actual heinous crime? That is what the legal system is for, right?

Everything you have said is what they want you to say. Thought crime is the last frontier, the place where everyman is guilty - period, as no one has pure thoughts and even if one did, the thought can be twisted in court with ease.

In this case, his defense is the point, he's paying through the teeth for the right to defend his thoughts and this is what the government wants, and most people will run from the idea of defending this, "@#$hole who deserves to die based on his vile thoughts." In fact, if he isn't convicted, outrage will be easily stirred up too.

The way to get the law in is to get the one polarizing figure out front, then let the "what if" hand wringing begin. Sure he could have killed someone, and ate them, and so could I, but he didn't and neither did I. Baum, who wrote the Wizard of Oz was pretty sure that coming out and criticizing the banking cartel would get him killed, so he wrote in metaphor, but his "thoughts" when put into symbols for all to see where VILE to the banking folks, worthy of death. Is he on trial for what he said, what he thought, or what he wrote? 2000 years of criminal law says - "show me the victim..."

The fact that he is a cop is beside the point, the cops aren't saints, not even close, not even the best ones, so he is a guy, with a job, with a less then conventional mind, who's writings, killed less people, did zero harm, then the people who were actually killed in the US by police today.

It is a crime to use law enforcement databases such as driver's license records and vehicle registration information for anything other than law enforcement purposes. This is probably what they will have to convict him of violating. Other than that, you make an interesting point. Surprised his thread hasn't often more traffic.

I forgot to add, isn't there some buzz about mandatory mental health screening included in the abomination health care bill? Wouldn't it be amazing if you could go to a psych and say, admit to "really hoping your boss drops dead" and that mental health person contact the DHS? Wouldn't that really keep the crimes to a zero level? What about the current stories about kids who gripe about, "awful Ms. Olsen" and how, "I just wish she'd die tomorrow" and how "officials" seek to stop their way of thinking by expelling them.

This isn't for you, this is in case the earth rages on for another few years, most will forget cannibal man in an annals of thought crime, especially when thinking about what I just wrote about him becomes a crime.

This is inevitable, it happens every time the system gets this far, it begins to eat itself, and, voila, those "here" simply leave for good, leaving the system in collapse. It has happened before, will happen again, will always happen.

They could have nabbed him on 'conspiracy to commit' which is a real crime and not really considered a thought crime.

I bet it's hard to prosecute, though.
