Obama has signed off $85bn spending cuts

President Barack Obama has reluctantly ordered an $85bn austerity drive that could slow the US economy and slash jobs, after blaming Republicans for refusing to stop the "dumb" spending cuts.

The Pentagon's budget is set to be slashed by roughly $46 billion.

The Telegraph

Defense spending is cut by $46 billion. With the rise of China, why is an American president cutting defense spending?

$46bn is only 1% of the military's budget, and that's not including black ops and classified DARPA projects.

Meanwhile, $46bn could give everyone on Earth clean drinking water and the ability to produce and filter their own in poverty-stricken areas. Food for thought.

This is a minuscule cut to what would really be needed... in a just world.

Seriously??? We need to cut more of defense spending. The only reason we aren't cutting what we should and need to is because a collapse is almost inevitable (well inevitable) and this puny cut is pretty much just lip service to keep people thinking the government is working.

We should be cutting the defense budget by WAY more. Bringing troops home, closing bases (instead of opening new ones as we just did), ending aid to foreign countries including Israel and Pakistan (first and foremost).

What do you think he would say if you asked him directly?

Why the Defense instead of other departments?

Maybe the protection of American's is not in his favor?

Or maybe he would say their budget is so over-inflated that they can spare a 1% cut to their budget, its pennies to them. Or not because people like you are so paranoid that there is a terrorist around every corner and in every dark alleyway ready to kill you. Lets just say thats what I would say if I was Obama.

People like you will always find a boogieman for why we should never cut bloated Pentagons budget. I think Obama should put in place a plan that will cut The Pentagons budget in half over the next 5yrs and close half the bases around the world. The world doesn't want us to be world police force.

$85 Billion....coincidental that it is the exact amount of the monthly Fed buying (treasury & mortgage securities).

People doesn't get it, The government is not cutting any military spending and neither foreign aid r, when the government said Defense budge cuts it means jobs, jobs and more jobs within the US not abroad

Cutting the welfare supporters in the nation will only add more to the burden of state unemployment and yet the same welfare tax supporters will become welfare recipient also.

Get it people the budget cuts means crap the government will still keep spending like a run away train and the economy will still get crappy for the rest of the tax payers in the Nation now within poverty level

And then Obamacare comes into effect, be mandated to shed more hard earned dollars on outrageous insurance.

there is plenty of misallocated funds wasted in military & defense

for instance the private contractors/mercinaries getting 10X the pay of a similar pair of boots on the ground but wearing a uniform of one of the branches of service Army/AF/Navy/Marines/CG/Drones

the open southern border allowing both scared Mexicans that are fleeing the drug cartels & the insurgents of AQ& similar terror cells using the southern frontier as a access corridor

handing the USAs proven adversary.....radical Muslims et al Billions (as in Egypt) for advanced weapons and to the Syria rebels (AKA: AQ , Muslim Brotherhood, Ansar al ~whatever~) tens of Millions in aid so the rebels who last year were killing USA troops in Iraq & Afghan. can have AC & a feast while using the arms & munitions snuck to them via the Bnghazi converor belt... yes indeed, our enemy combatants yesterday are being lavished upon...
and i can confidently say that the reason is not to sway their anger against the (great satan) USA...or even to bribe or convert them into rich, capitalist-pigs... the love affair between the WH & Islam & Sharia is still in its infancy, just watch as the year progresses...the former USA will be modeled after Turkey

as for sane budget roll backs... i have long said that military aircraft flyovers are an extravagance we should do without... i don't know the real reason that Øbama stopped that air-show spectacle but in the end he is correct in ceasing that operation...it is wasteful, arrogant, & Statist in promoting a militaristic fascade

in other posts i revealed my views of the Øbama ploy in cutting critical & sensitive services to the detriment of the people...if 1st responders jobs/hours were cut or other critical services were rendered unsatisfactory (like the layoffs of Air Marshals) then Articles of Impeachment should begin

The private mercenaries just got their contracts review and those are jobs oversea nothing here in the US. none of the jobs oversea has gotten a cut at all.

And I am as outraged as you to find out that the same terrorist we were fighting last year are to get armed this year thanks to the corruption in Washington call politicraps with tax payer dollars.

No cuts on that one either, neither the QEs for Wall street too big to fail.

Obama is in bed with the insurance companies.
Either that, or he actually believes his own rhetoric.
(maybe both)

We had our taxes done at H&R Block and the tax preparers were all talking about how, next year, there are going to be a lot of ticked off people because they'll all owe penalties for not getting insurance. All these people who think they are suddenly going to get free insurance, will instead have to dish out even more money that they dont' have.

46 billion is not 1% of the military budget it is about 6%.

With that said the military budget needs to be cut by at least half, and preferably like 80%. We do not need to be spending 100's of billions on defense, as long is we have nuclear submarines nobody is going to attempt an invasion. With that said, anybody that believes cutting the defense budget fixes our economy is very wrong. Medical spending is by far the largest problem.

As far as the 85 billion, that is about a 2% of the total federal budget. It is completely outrageous people are screaming about that amount of cuts. When we lose our ability to run a deficit - Something I am almost 100% positive will happen within 5 years - more likely within 2 the federal budget will be cut by 50% or more.

The fact that politicians and citizens are arguing a 2% cut is outrageous shows they have absolutely no clue what is in store for them in the very near future - and demonstrates clearly nothing will be done to try to prevent a collapse. We are going to drive off the cliff at 100 mph and the majority wont even realize it till the car impacts.

That is going to be rude awakening for those that never gotten into buying insurance because they think is too expensive, wait when they are mandate to buy or else.

We that already have insurance we know how our rates has been hike in the last year.

Oh, yes he is sleeping bit time with insurance companies after all their lobbyist were the ones that wrote most of the healthcare reform, people are so gullible they believe anything.

I'm afraid we will have to eliminate all congressional, house and executive pensions until the US shows a surplus enough to cover it.

Flyers...we don't always see eye to eye on things but boy you said a mouthful right there!

It is cronyism at it's finest! Prop up the insurance companies...a private, for profit industry...that money goes to the securities backers that fund the insurance companies...you know...those guys on Wall Street. I have said this ever since the ridiculous act was passed...this has NOTHING to do with "the good of the people" and has everything to do with mandating and forcing people to pump their hard earned dollars into the racket called Wall Street...

it would be funny if some new technology created by the us is brought mainstream and sold to other nations for a massive profit.

Bringing the world into a golden age with a single invention that pays off most of our debt.

A series of looming deadlines threatening across-the-board budget cuts known as sequestration, plus the expiration of this nation's temporary budget, called a continuing resolution and the expiration of a temporary debt ceiling suspension.
Though the spending cuts that have just starting could trigger an economic depression to start once again, Obama and Congress cannot seem to work out a deal. The spending cuts may make it hard for a ton of industries to keep their doors open. This could be the US madness month.
