So knowing that white lines that form behind airplanes way up in the air are called contrails and they can an do persist for hours or minutes depending on the conditions, why would you automatically assume they were chemtrails? Couldn't they be contrails just like they have been since the beginning of flight?

Simple answer is that they could be either given that patents do also exist for artificial manipulation of the weather, (for seemingly varying reasons) as well as 'mundane' effects of contrails. BTW, neither are particularly benign.

Yes, theoretically they could be either. Either contrails, trails of ice crystals that indicate where there will also be exhaust chemicals in the air from a passing jet (though the absence of such a trail does not also indicate the absence of these exhaust chemicals). Which have been recorded, sampled and studied in huge depth for 9 decades.

Or they could be chemtrails, deliberately sprayed by aircraft, but for which the composition, manufacture, storage, operating systems and even the reasons for it being done are ALL subject to widely differing speculation because nobody can point to anything definitive after at least two decades of constant global operations.

I agree.

But why the firm belief in the latter over the former?

RIght, agreed. I just think to assume the line is a chemtrail when it sure does look like a contrail, is like assuming every picture the looks kind of like a bear in the wild is obviously bigfoot. (we don't even know if they exist)
