Just spotted this on AOL.co.uk homepage.

Over 200 manta rays have been found dead, washed up on a beach in Gaza, cause apparently unknown?

Anyone on ATS have any ideas as to the possible cause? Yet another mass die off?

It's quite sad, I've always liked Rays a lot.

It looks like they might be Devil Rays, not Mantas?
(According to a report on deepseanews.com)

Suggested causes so far...

Toxic spill
Algal Toxin

hmm.

...and another link, which suggests that they are known locally as "batfish" and that they were caught deliberately?

Looks like the story may have originated on an Italian news site? (repubblica.it)
There are several more pictures there, and they are quite graphic.

Wrong species.
Mantas don't have stingers. Irwin would have known this.

Your right, they are lined up fairly orderly, it doesn't appear that there are drag grooves either. Strange isn't it.
