Just spotted this on AOL.co.uk homepage.

Over 200 manta rays have been found dead, washed up on a beach in Gaza, cause apparently unknown?

Anyone on ATS have any ideas as to the possible cause? Yet another mass die off?

It's quite sad, I've always liked Rays a lot.

It looks like they might be Devil Rays, not Mantas?
(According to a report on deepseanews.com)

Suggested causes so far...

Toxic spill
Algal Toxin

hmm.

...and another link, which suggests that they are known locally as "batfish" and that they were caught deliberately?

Looks like the story may have originated on an Italian news site? (repubblica.it)
There are several more pictures there, and they are quite graphic.

Better to wash up dead in Gaza than alive in Israel.

Wrong species.
Mantas don't have stingers. Irwin would have known this.

Methane plumes...we are at over 90 mass animal die-off events so far in 2013. These die offs are caused by dangerous gases, either methane and hydrogen sulfide, and the events will continue to increase. I've posted this same information in the thread about fish in Peru. Here's the numbers on these die-offs.

So far this year there have been 89 known mass die-offs. That's 52 days. That's 1.71 mass die-offs per day. In 2012 there were 464 known events. That's 1.27 mass die-offs per day. That's quite an increase, but in 2011 there were 145 known events. That's only 0.4 events per day.

2011 145 die-offs 0.4 per day
2012 464 die-offs 1.27 per day
2013 89 so far 1.71 per day

Mass die-offs in 2011

Mass die-offs in 2012

Mass die-offs in 2013

Here's the dangerous gas thread with all kinds of information on this methane topic.

i'm always saddened to see such group animal die-offs, of which there are ever increasing examples.

All this sea death is getting sickening. I'm sure that the numbers are increasing. The people living in these areas all over are saying that this isn't normal. This is not just because we have more access to the news, the number and severity of these dieoff events is increasing worldwide. Either our Manmade altered chemistry is doing something to the animals or Godzilla is back.

Maybe they were overtaken by or succumbed to Death Rays?
/me goes and hides.

But seriously, it looks like someone took time to orient them and lay them out in an orderly fashion.
I'm fairly certain if they washed up on the beach they wouldn't be so orderly.

Your right, they are lined up fairly orderly, it doesn't appear that there are drag grooves either. Strange isn't it.
