A facebook advertisement banner on ATS!!!! Cmon REALLY!!!

OK Ive had a few rants about ATS adverts before, I whinged about seeing Fran Drescher and also the ston... ahem lazy monkey but they were both done in a more tongue in cheek humorous tone.

Just now A facebook ad came up asking me to make a profile and get started, Seriously ATS whats the deal??

Ive seen a few other ads that I didnt like or had me scratching my head but facebook!!!

Is the site really so hard up for a buck that its willing to sell out in such a massive way?

Facebook and its practices go against pretty much everything I see ATS standing for, whether it was done deliberately or via a 3rd party why would ATS allow this?

Is anyone else seeing this advert or is it just me?

Umm, so what? ATS subscribed to an ad engine that displays ads they have no control over. ATS doesn't choose the ads. The ads, in many cases, are a result of where YOU have been. If you look at generators, you'll see generator ads. If you look at cars, you'll see car ads because of the cookies on YOUIR machine. It's just how it works. ATS is not in a position to dictate what ads are on the site through these services.

So stop blaming them. You don't have to click on them, right? So get over it.

I would assume it has some control over whats advertised, Im not logging in from my lappy Im currently on a friends who does have facebook. It would make more sense for it to turn up on mine to try get a new user, whats the point in advertising to someone who already uses the service? its not like it was an add for a new feature or anything.

Aren't most internet ads different for everybody? As in they use your cookies etc. to direct certain stuff at you that are related to your interests and what not?

If that is the case for ads on ATS, maybe if you weren't on Facebook so much it wouldn't think its one of your interests.

Hahahaha. But seriously, I shut my account down almost a year ago. I miss it like I'd miss a hole in my head.

I know EVERYTHING I ever did or said on fb is still out there but there is now one year less of me on it.

FB = waste of time

Everyone does that.
The worst is google, that allows itself with its new privacy policy (introduced in march 2012) to collect any information your browser is able to collect. This includes cookies, and datas on local storage system.
It's in plain text, black on white, but no one cares... Despite the fact that they distribute a browser... Almost no one sees a problem when a company distributing its own web browser allows itself to collect anything the browser is able to
(Yes, I said it before, but I still have hope to open people eyes about them... Plus it's easyly checkable, it's still in their privacy policy atm, and a few click on their site will show you the scadalous text.)

Ehh..

ATS uses advertising companies who use targetted advertising based on YOUR own browsing habits.

We actually have little or nothing to do with what ads appear, unless we find one that isn't appropriate for the website and then SO makes the appropriate request to have it moved out of rotation.

That's how all that works as far as I know. Even if you don't personally use Facebook, if you visit social networking sites in general, you can attract ads that are associated, although sometimes loosely, with what you are browsing.

This is the first time Ive seen that particular ad and Ive logged in to ATS almost daily for a year, as mentioned Im actually on a friends lappy at the moment so maybe thats why.

Still seems like a waste of FB advertising $ though, I mean shes already a frequent user

Maybe a few people on FB will see the ATS page, have a look at the site and learn a few things about FB and close their Acc.

Im sure thats the only reason ATS has a page on that awful awful place

I keep seeing it said in such a flippant regard, it's quite off putting.

"They target you based on what You do online.." said as if it's a completely normal thing.

It's not you know. It's the online version of ambulance chasing. It's like having door to door sales men follow you up the street to the deli, and yell at you "Hey I saw you buy milk, I like milk, I sell milk, wanna buy some better milk? Why don't you want my milk? I am really here to sell you a car. Buy this car. And you wont have to walk to the deli any more. Yes!"

And you know that if in real life someone did that everywhere I went, I'd punch his lights out.

But online, "They do it, because of what YOU do." and all related problems associated with it fall to you.

I really despise this way of marketing.

And when I see people justify it - more so web designers who berate ad blockers for stopping them from getting money, money which they have no earned in any real way - I really have to hold my tongue..

"Just let us do it, it won't hurt you. it's all good.." as they grab coins off the street, following you as shop, or hell, even go to the naughty video store.

Irks me that it's become so defensible by people that the person who ever does ask, it an exhausted accepted tone, Why - they get the rough end of the stick for not just liking it and playing along.

I don't like stalkers. Even if they're robots. I certainly never buy anything from them. I make it an effort not to. best deal in the world could be offered, and I'd still refuse. Because it's the principle of the matter. to me at least.

The ads make revenue based on page views and not actual clicks. I do agree it's a bit strange for Facebook to advertise, since the 'Like' button in itself is a crazy huge advertisement tool.

Meh, I suppose they make enough cash to warranty useless purchases.

It's an easy fix! Just clear your cache which includes your cookies before logging on to ATS. If you haven't got it already you may want to install an add-on that deletes LSOs (long term "sugar" cookies that remain even after clearing your cookies) as well. That way you can get the random "hot Asian girls in your area" and fashion ads that I frequently get- oh, and mustn't forget those "one simple trick...." ads!

Of course you can, but that doesn't make you immune to criticism, You can also show how naive you are for complaining about something ATS has little control over. I'm sure they have some, such as no porn ads, for example, but they cannot go through and pick and choose, ad by ad, which ones show up--especially since the ad engine works at least partially on what you have done yourself. I've NEVER seen a Facebook ad on ATS. Why is that? because I don't go to Facebook. The ads are targeted. You are the target and you are the one who pulled the trigger. Try to understand this small point. It's like stubbing your toe and blaming the Pope.

All I'm telling you is that you are ranting about your own actions, not ATS, and that's just silly.
