You would think technology would help education, but now it's a battle between cell phones and getting the attention of students. As someone who teaches CAD (26 computers in my lab), I was expecting kids who have grown up with computers would know more about basic computer file management and basic utility computer diagnostics than an old guy like me. It's simply not the case.

What they do know, is how to play video games, download music onto their IPOD's or MP3 players and texting on their cell phones. Skills that the majority of employers can care less about. I don't know how many times I've witnessed students almost get hit by cars as they cross the road in front of our school.

I use a lot of technology in my classroom, yet students will use every chance they get to pull out their cell phones to text their friends. I don't even want to mention how often students will surf the net or find a game on-line to play with instead of doing their drawing assignments. Unfortunately, my school district doesn't know how, or can't block out internet video games without blocking out Google altogether.

I also can't stand the lack of customer service when calling a company or a retail store. Half the time the recording or option list doesn't include the reason why you're calling! I don't know how many times I've found myself swearing at the recording.
I agree customer service has really declined.

I also think basic scruples and respect has really affected our younger generation. Facebook has enabled kids to say the most hateful things about fellow classmates. They feel empowered to say what ever they feel because they don't have to look anyone in the eye when saying it.

I also think the easy access of pornography on the internet has caused children to experiment with sex at a much younger age causing an increase in pregnancies among teens.

The idea of cyber learning is a joke. What parent is going to stand over their kid making sure they're not accessing their face book when they should be doing their assignments? How many students will get together and just cheat? Our political leaders think that's the future of education.

Technology has also allowed our governments and corporations to spy on us. Anything we say using the internet is easily accessible. Corporations now know immediately our shopping habits and our personal medical needs.

The biggest pain is the @!!##@ a-holes that have nothing better to do but create viruses to infect our computers!

In my opinion technology is a double edged sword. One side we can shoot to the stars, evolve, and repair the earth and it's people. The other one... What we have right now. Consumerism mixed with disgusting materialism. And on top of that, more big brother, more ways to kill people without having to use actual humans, overall, with technology, TPTB have an easier time controlling people.

Were barely out of the jungle, seriously, we look like retarded apes. Just turn on a TV (not to long of course, you don't want to hurt yourself) and see what I mean.

But you know what the real tragedy of all of this is?

This #! Yes I know, tainted Satanic ego's running wild controlling the worlds economies and thus the world, don't piss me off as much as this. (illogical I know)

But this is where I see humanity declining even further. I see groups of teenagers huddling in groups, all completely fixated on their cell phones. They're either "texting" or whatever socializing their doing away from the socializing they're doing in the first place. That doesn't make any sense to me.

(Are they all secretly texting each other? What in the hell is that?!?)

But the real kicker is when i see a father or son, mother and daughter, any combination works, and instead of them talking to one another, or just shutting the # up for a second and enjoy some silence, they're on their cell phones.

This is Big Brothers wet dream. The Telescreen is now in everyone's pocket basically. (Though the internet helps balance it out, somewhat)

Well anyway.

Everything is achievable through technology”
The belief that anything and everything can be achieved through technology, is the basis of us,. We tend to analyse the issues, and provide a solution that utlises technology in one way or the other.
If we take a moment and look around us, we would realise how important technology has become in our daily lives. Better communication, better transportation, better entertainment, better comforts….. technology is now embedded in all aspects of our lives. It has provided us with a multitude of choices, for a better life.
Although the impact technology has on our lives is extremely wonderful, we must not forget the impact that it has (to some degree) on the environment, and neither should we forget that technology must be used for a positive cause. There has to be moderation in everything we do, and must always consider the negative impacts on the self and community as a whole.
Better killing machines is not the solution for any issue.

Actually is the only for some... Think ww2 .. America needs to have better killing machines then their enemies NO MATTER WHAT or America will not exist..
It is no longer survivor of the fittest person but survivor of the fittest countries or continent...

Briefly I am a "old retired worker" from several generations ago.....a long time before all the technology. I even remember "door to door sales" (today you would be arrested as a terrorist!!!!!! for carrying a briefcase.. (It might be a bomb!)

I remember when you had to pick up the telephone to make a call to someone.. AND A PERSON ANSWERED, If they did not answer, you called again later.

Today, If I call someone and the "voicemail" does not work, the girl picks up the phone and says, "Sorry The voice mail not working you can't leave a message for John Doe"

I explain to the girl that if she got a pencil and paper she can WRITE MY NAME AND PHONE NUMBER AND HAND THE MESSAGE TO HIM" She is impressed!

I cant reach people any more!!!! .. the more communications the HARDER it is to talk to someone!

Facebook, Email, Twitters, I Phones, I Pads, Computers, Skypes, Texting.... ITS NO WONDER OUR ECONOMY IS SO BAD.. Sales people cant talk to anyone but machines!

Well, folks this was all planned and its just part of the program...

Anyone else? can you not talk to people when you need to? Does todays gadgets and technology keep you from growing your business or making sales?

I have sales people stop by and chat all the time, even though I have a sign above my door that says, No Solicitors, I blame the public schools.
Talking with sales people is not a problem except when I am on the phone, or have places to go and the sales people don't seem to comprehend and never stop talking. Technology is good, it provides a needed buffer for certain occasions...especially for people that don't have the rude gene or want to develop one.

an old punk band coined the phrase.. "give me convenience or give me death" back in 1987 and i just wonder what they think of the world, even with the turmoil of the every day struggle we endure, now that our lives are way to convenient, so convenient that it's literally dumbing us down to the point of not being able to interact with our own family members.

look at any crowd, anywhere and all you see is a sea of people walking around inches from each other, bumping into each other and never acknowledging anyone other than who they're talking/texting on their smart phone right in front of their faces. at times though it's kind of funny to watch because it's like seeing ants walking around bumping into one another never knowing the person inches away from them.

i can't say for sure if the dumbing down of the human race was actually a planed event but i will say this.. if it was it's the most perfect plan ever devised.

fast food and a computer is a perfect formula for genocide, TPTB don't need a weapon at all we'll just do it to ourselves with a big, greasy, online smile.

My dad who is 87 does not own a computer. He does not own an answering machine. Technology for him stopped in the 1960s.

I'm a computer programmer. Needless to say, he does not have a clue about what I do for a living.

Society continues to evolve and change. If you are stuck in the past, much of life will also pass you by.

Your examples hardly seem like a society that is being destroyed. It is just changed from what you are comfortable with.

I thought your post was going to be about social networking destroying interpersonal relationships. I might have bought into that premise.

The more things change the more they stay the same, it looks like things have come full circle and the only way to actually be able to talk to someone is to go to their door or place of business to talk to them in person.

Glad your amused by the grammar of the OP.

Maybe a bit of respect for your elders would not go astray.

Now go back to your facebook and stop bothering the adults.

I don't use facebook, and I'm an adult. You're the one with the poor attitude, who needs to get lost.

If you can't see how ironic it is that someone's complaining about current communication, while doing it with horrible grammar, well I feel sorry for you.

The Internet has been propagated mostly by people who have subscribed to it . Now the Internet is world wide and is used to gather information from posters and blogger. The Internet has become quite a Beast at our expense . We now rely on the Internet for every part of our life . If the Internet went down we would likely perish in the cities from lack of basic food and water and medicine . The power grid would go down and phones would die . We would be lost and in chaos because our money transfer system would be down .
Now that Beast I was talking about is growing large . There is a push to go Global with a Global e-money that can not be handled or stuffed into the mattress . There is also a push to implant RFID chips in your hand and use as an ID to conduct your business . This is called the Mark of the Beast .
So the Internet is going to impact your world in a big way .

I will just be honest here. I LITERALLY only read the thread title here. Not the OP or even a single comment.

I am responding to the objective claim of the title only.

You cannot fight progress. It is gonna happen. As a society you must ADAPT with responsibility. Problem is, we aren't a responsible species. We will be undone if we cannot learn to grow our wisdom to a point that matches our technological advance.

It isn't a computer that is destroying us, it is our own complacency.

oh the irony
claiming that technology is destroying society while at the same time using said technology to attempt to communicate that message

and i love that people gave him stars "yeah screw technology" *click click*
seems more than a few people are conflicted on the issue

Amen to that! I wish the only technology would be medical. Facebook is a drama filled outlet where people worry took much about everyone elses life instead of living their own, twitter is just downright ridiculous, tv has popularized sex, gays, and transgender.
It's about enough to drive me mad. If we could rewind back to the 60s, if only.

Are people more or less depressed because they are "more connected" via social networks?

Article 1
Article 2
Article 3

Notice how article 2 is pro social network from a website that deals with economics.

I am on the side of the OP.

If technology is so great then:

why are the blood labs in hospitals getting bigger and requiring more testing to be done for simple things like calcium deficiency or vitamin D deficiency which was not a problem not so long ago?
Why are people sicker than they were 50-60 years ago in the land of the free?
Why do people need energy drinks to function at age 14-15 years old?
Why is it that 1 in 7 people are still starving in the world?
Will technology help humans achieve great spiritual heights where money is no longer needed to function in society?
Why do we try to emulate nature when nature is already the best most efficient "machines" that were ever produced (I believe in creationism) (ex.: robots, air purifiers, fake foods, fake fibres for clothing)?
Why do we need to go on Mars for again? What is the ultimate purpose? Do we need a new recipe? Do we need more resources to waste to make more calculators for kids who can't count?
Why do we seek other habitable planets when we can't take care of this one?

I know that great advancements have been made due to HUMANS using their brains to solve problems, it's not just negative stuff. However the line between luxury and necessity has been blurred or removed by a special effects editing software. We are having a hard time differentiating reality from fabrication.
