due to the nature of the video, I would suggest NOT posting any disturbing images from the video.....

You are responsible for your own posts.

You don't think it's okay to post a picture of a dead bird? That's too disturbing for ATS? Six year old kids poke dead birds with sticks. "Inside nature's giants" must be the ultimate horror show for you.

Yes, let's not post pictures of reality and what is happening because seeing a dead bird might upset someone..

People should know and see what is happening. Especially if they can't watch this video.

I won't spoil it by talking about the topic. Just see for yourself........
DISCLAIMER!!!! VIDEO HAS SOME DISTURBING FOOTAGE

Don't birds always eat something indigestible to help grind up their food?
Don't gulls migrate to that island for breeding?
Don't they hang out human-side of the world in parking lots and city dumps?
Is the video author trying to imply that all that debris finds its way to Midway Island from the US?
Or is he implying that WWII soldiers left their plastic Coke bottle tops on the beaches?

Sensationalism. There are probably 100's of millions of those birds around the world. Rats of the sky 2nd place only to pigeons.

Animals die, humans have waste, humans die sometimes from eating stuff animals have touched or by simply eating bad animals. Full circle.

Sad, but... cmon.

I think there is a lot we're not being told here...something about this island makes it collect waste... This concentration is completely abnormal, It's a shock and awe video that isn't giving us the facts. I can't hear the audio where I'm viewing it, so apologies if the info is there.

God there are some very questionable individuals visiting ATS! That is not exactly how I want to put it but don't want my post removed because of obscenities.

For the last time these are NOT seagulls! Nor do they 'tear each other apart' or eat plastic because they are stupid!

I was reading about this earlier today in an article in The Sunday Times, dated 10 th Feb 2013. It was about a female Laysan Albatross who was originally tagged in 1956!

. 1956.
. That makes her 62

During this time it is believed she will have spent 90% of her time at sea and flown 3 million miles. She has hatched 35 chicks and has a wingspan of 6 1/2 feet.

The Laysan Albatross mate for life and are very tender with each other. They share the task of raising their single chick, taking it in turns to fly up to a thousand miles to find food (fish).

The article goes on to say that Wisdom (as named by the scientists that have studied her for many years) is unusual in living so long because of all the plastic in the ocean -

'Birds who are parents like Wisdom eat the plastic, mistaking it for food, regurgitate it and
feed their young with it, filling their stomachs with plastic and leaving them unable to feed'

There is more information and video/pictures at thesundaytimes.co.uk/news

The birds are truly wonderful and film posted by the OP had me in tears of sorrow and shame........because I know I have not always been as aware as I am now, which makes me part of the problem.

Someone earlier commented that he has never seen a lion make a film about how awful and cruel lions can be...............well I hope he later realised his stupidity!

I would like to suggest to anyone who wants to take a deeper look into the issue the documentary "addicted to plastic". It can be seen here.

From styrofoam cups to artificial organs, plastics are perhaps the most ubiquitous and versatile material ever invented. No invention in the past 100 years has had more influence and presence than synthetics. But such progress has had a cost.

Yet people get angry when I say there needs to be LESS of us one way or another, we are killing the planet!

Wish people would watch the movie Avatar again, get an idea where we are going and what we lose by thinking humans and our great inventions are the best of all things!

And yes I would not mind being one of our multiplying species who dies if it meant saving the planet.

Heartbreaking! Those poor birds feasting on all our garbage floating in the ocean. I can't believe how much debris is found inside them. I can't believe they manage to swallow most of that stuff.

Without us a bright object in the sea would be food.

On a second note. Seagulls are probably the most annoying, waste of space, animal on the planet.

The only reason the overpopulate is people feed them and our garbage!!

Can't imagine why anyone would feel that way, they are beautiful creatures and watching them relaxes a person as it is easy to see all of the town has lunch at the bay watching them.

We have many injured and dying as some find it fun to use BB guns and arrows on them for "fun".

only wish those who see other wondrous creatures as worthless and just there for the amusement of harming, to take a long look in the mirror and tell themselves WHY are they less of a waste of space?

When we take from the oceans we should be allowed to put back.. Instead laws exist which prevent persons from releasing fry to replenish exhausted fisheries. Tree hugging whales lovers will doom humankind to extinction!

The world's oceans should be farmed. The oceans should be fertilized and the over abundance of life should be harvested for conversion into renewable fuel and food stuffs! When we take from a fishery we should be allowed to replenish stocks by releasing fry etc etc etc...

P.S. The only good whale is a dead one! We must master these natural systems not remain dependent upon the fragile and doomed natural order. If species do not serve a need and they give way, then that's what zoos are for! the whole of the planet should be used for the single purpose of supporting human life! Mankind should strive for the technology to completely manage our oceans, atmosphere etc... A population so large that is forces mankind to new worlds should be our goal!

To live is to die, and over just a dozen or so generations the birds who do not eat plastic or are better suited to processing it will dominate the gene pool. Life advances by means of the most brutal struggle friend.

And yet HUMAN life is all anyone seems to feel is important. Human sick, elderly are not even to have a dignified end because we are valued so highly it is against the law even to off your own self!

The native Americans had it right, when an elder wanted to say "my time is over" they could walk away with dignity and respect, stop eating and drinking and die. Now most on here think we should put them in diapers and force feed their living corpse, all the misplaced compassion!

A child that will experience a lifetime of pain MUST be brought into the world after all it is a HUMAN BEING!

Misplaced compassion and compassion for the other creatures of the world nor the planet itself!

I like that idea! Clean the plastic out of our oceans, melt it down and make man made flotation devices on a large scale. Icebergs are melting, polar bears and penguins are in trouble. Lets make em a new home out of our recycled waste.

Plastics leach poisons. Most man created things are poison to us and the planet.

You just inspired me to raise enough money to buy these islands, move there , and turn it into my own country.. because somebody needs to be there to clean up and take care of the wild life .

A romantic and positive idea. But the problem is not the island itself, it is the oceans that have HUGE "islands" of plastic garbage. Please read these:

Great Pacific Garbage Patch
How Addiction to Plastic Poisons Our Planet

Still: I wish you good luck with the island!

All this video proved to me is that when a population exceeds a certain amount, they'll resort to eating garbage. I've never seen a more clear example of population control.

Over just a dozen or so generations the birds who do not eat plastic or are better suited to processing it will dominate the gene pool. Life advances by means of the most brutal struggle friend. I am certain similar scenarios have played out millions of times in the Earth's history. Ask yourself how birds know instinctually not to eat poison plants or bugs etc...

The technology required to support 500 billion humans would see the Earth completely managed, and would require mankind to seek resources from other worlds thereby eliminating the single point failure that is Mother Earth. It is the only path to long term survival for our species.

Depopulation is an idiots dream! Try as you might the notion of humans hurting planet Earth is entirely fictional. There are countless events in Earth’s history that make the entire history of human impact seem trivial.

One thing is certain for this species of bird and that is exstinction will find them. It has nothing to do with humans. They are doomed in the long term, unless by some miracle mankind endures and they survive in a zoo or similar.

That sir is da troof, and is common sense! Properly managed oceans can both feed and fuel a population of a trillion+. If you divided the oceans equally, every Human on the planet would have 6 billion gallons+!

It is not politically correct to say, but the point is Mankind can endure if they choose to do so.. The Earth is indeed bigger than you and I, but its natural systems and weaker life forms etc.. should not be viewed as more important than the existence of our own species.

What about mosquitoes? I find them useless and the most annoying to take the number one spot.

I was extremely surprised while watching this video. I seen a lighter and was like.. what? a lighter? We must be more conscious of the fact that what we do will always have a consequence around the world. Be it bad or good. Be it little or big.

Even if this was the case, it doesn't justify the action. If we were all just a little more conscious.. this type of thing wouldn't happen at all. I for one will be a lot more careful where I put my trash. Usually when I eat gum, I ball up the little wrapper as small as I can and "punt" it somewhere inconspicuous. Going to stop doing that.

There is just music in the video.

It is sad to see creatures die, but it is part of the cycle - in this case, adapt or die. Millions of species since life began faded away because they couldn't adapt. Not eating plastic might be an adaptation?

Solve humanity's problems, then go save the animals, but get your priorities straight, that's for sure.
Humans trump all else. Too much at stake right now to distract government into even pretending to pay attention to the plight of plastic eating animals.

I don't know how old you are or if you are a troll trying to make as outlandish statements that you can to see what kind of response you can provoke. You appear to have been on ATS for some time. Your answer to the issue appears to me to be very narcissistic and lacking foresight. Your idea that evolution can move as fast as several generations these birds will know not to eat our plastic is not supported by scientific evidence. I am glad I will be dead and gone before the world you envision should ever occur.

I am happy to know you will be dead as well, thanks.. The problem will only get worse, but the birds and other creatures will adapt.

A new breed of dog can be engineered in just a few decades or less. Life will cope friend, and those species which cannot are doomed anyhow. Consider that 98% of species that have ever existed are now exstinct.

You are the troll in that you will dismiss even common sense arguments to further your own deluded take on reality. I love nature too friend, but at the end of the day all species are doomed with or without us, and I prefer to think that mankind may somehow endure. God forbid I see more importance in our own species than I see in some Birds.

My posts in this thread are 100% on topic and relevant to the issue at hand. I am not a troll just someone who hopes people will come to see that placing others species needs above our own could well spell disaster for humankind!

The world is full of those who would like to see billions of people put to death to better preserve natural systems which are without any question doomed to fail anyhow. Are you one these people by chance? Self hate should be left out of the "In it for the species" debate!
