I did a search and didn't find this.
This is the only forum I could think to put it in, so mods, if you feel it should be elsewhere please feel free to move it.

Those of you that know me on here will also know that I am not a religious person, that perhaps makes this even more poignant

I think this prayer should be recited on every street corner until the message hits home.
Just my opinion

.
THE PRAYER THAT SHOCKED THE WORLD When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard:

"Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, "Woe to those who call evil good", but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values.

We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.

We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.

We have killed our unborn and called it choice.

We have shot anti-abortionists and called it justifiable.

We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem.

We have abused power and called it politics.

We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition.

We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression.

We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.

Search us, Oh, God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Amen!" The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in protest.

In 6 short weeks, Central Christian Church, where Rev. Wright is pastor, logged more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively.
The church is now receiving international requests for copies of this prayer from India, Africa and Korea. Commentator Paul Harvey aired this prayer on his radio program, "The Rest of the Story," and received a larger response to this program than any other he has ever aired.
With the Lord's help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and whole-heartedly become our desire so that we again can be called: "one nation under God."

I may be a non religious Brit but
Makes you think doesn't it ?

Yeah it makes me think that a close minded christian minister has no room to inject his opinions in an ancient and irrelevant religious prayer.

The values of our forefathers are the opposite of enlightenment? What the fug does that even mean? Has anyone decided to actually question any of this psycho-babble or have they just nodded their heads in agreement because it sounds deep?

Shot anti-abortionists and killed our unborn? Jeeee someone isn't pro-life. Abortion was the only topic mentioned twice in this so called "prayer", a prayer is not supposed to be a time to interject your personal opinons on political topics.

I know, as you stated in your OP.
I'm well aware of the state of human suffering in the world, so I wasn't surprised much by this prayer. I just hate that this guy couldn't speak without bias; there is always some agenda involved when dealing with religion.

A prayer repeated is an incantation, incantations are prohibited when used as a prayer to God. They're lazy and un-inspiring. God wants you to talk TO him not AT him. Do you know how rude it is to talk 'at' something?

Do not repeat your prayers, or pray in public. Pray in private, and mean what you say. THAT is how you honour the Lord our God.

Oh, you mean the hymns and the mantras consistently repeated at every mass, every church service, every communion, and in every Sunday school across the nation?

Yeah, incantations are a regular part of Judaism. Remember the Hail Mary? Or the Lord's Prayer? Or any other of a number of prayers that Catholics and such were taught to repeat to themselves every time they sinned or were tempted to sin...

So much for your righteous instructions. Paganism is far too deeply embedded in Christianity to spare your swollen pride. Of course, you could just turn around and face the true origins of your faith.

Well...I like what you did here but...you will be flamed by the "intellectual elite"...

There are those so arrogant as to believe there is no Grand Architect...no higher mind...whatever...no thought behind the Universe...I don't pretend to understand it because it is beyond human comprehension...but some feel it is easier to deny it rather than acknowledge it...I personally think everyone is going to be in for a huge surprise...there is thought and will behind the Universe...it's just not going to be anything like what we thought.

What he said is not wrong...regardless of your level of personal arrogance...I enjoyed it....there is wisdom in the words.

We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.

We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.

We have killed our unborn and called it choice. ( I disagree with this but I see the message nonetheless)

We have shot anti-abortionists and called it justifiable. ( I like the duality here)

We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem. (If you do not teach fear of repercussion you have failed your children)

We have abused power and called it politics.

We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition. (Also greed, envy and a host of other things)

We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. (We have also polluted the air with poison and disease)

We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. (We have learned that society changes)

Those that cannot see the light in this message are lost beyond hope. I do not believe in a particular religion but I do believe in spirit...I believe in a creator...I believe that we will be held responsible for the pain we cause others. Are you right with the Universe?...prob not...in fact...most that have spurned this idea are prob not right with the Universe...this is why they rebuke it so fervently...they fear that they just might be wrong so they try t kill it...like their disagreement will matter when the sky cracks and the clocks stop moving....
