He automatically started trying to place the blame on the kid and bringing up ied attacks and defending a guy that pointed a gun at a kid and took a picture with sweeping generalizations of islamists.

i read the article, it didn't say that the scope image was his gun and scope....plus it was an image...maybe, just maybe, he's had rocks thrown at him by a number of these kids for no reason, and it was an stupid mistake brougnt on by frustration...you know..like all the muslim videos showing IDE explosions under western vehicles that killed people, and then having all the muslims cheering in the backround and praising their "god"...i guess that has entertainment value.

where is the money coming from, for the hundreds of rockets being fired into israel from lebanon and hamas...you think those rockets are just for israeli adults? the US also gives huge amounts of money to egypt, and what's happened there? every american and western friend i talk to now, that wanted to go and see the pyramids and experience the rich history of egypt, now say no way, they are afraid of being kidnapped for ransom, beat up, robbed, or killed, just for being a western tourist.

If you want to defend that kind of idiocy be my guest.

If I am assuming, that is because others have already had thier fun at that game. I take it you see why it is a bad idea to assume?

You have NO evidence that the picture was for a negative purpose, none what so ever. Until you have, you might want to consider the possibilities a bit more. Or you might not because some of them might argue with your mind set. Whatever.

You claim you havent made any assumptions. That claim is false.

You claim the photograph was taken "for a laugh" though there is no actual reason to think so.

You claim that the soldier in question was repremanded, but by your own addmission, the IDF leadership are less than morally sound, meaning they could have used the repremand to admonish the soldier for illustrating the wrongness of what the IDF do.

You post a picture of a man and his rifle, as if it means something ,when in fact it means absolutley nothing.

You fail to accept every possibility other than the one you support.

Reasonable and logical ? No. No not really.

It's not surprising, they use the children as human shields too.

Pffffft! What would you do if the worlds biggest super-power invaded your country? Stand there and just let them do it? Go toe to toe and just die for nothing. Or commit to guerrilla warfare? You would not be much aof a person to just lay down and let them do what they want.

On topic. That is just so messed up that anyone thinks its ok about making fun out of pointing a weapon at someones childs head. After all the children killed by the west this is NOT funny.

There are all kinds of children through out the world that are "just a trigger pull from death"

I mean I drive down the street everyday past lines of kids at schools, if I just...turned my wheel about 4 inches to the left I could make speed bumps of them all.

I think people are being pretty dramatic about this you do 500 things a day that could potentially cause you to be severely injured or killed.

It goes right back to the argument of responsibility, it is a wonderful and powerful photo. If anyone has ever been to see public officials speak on open campuses and brought your children, its just as likely their heads got sighted in on too....

Anyway not speaking to the situation at hand beyond the pretty gross over exaggeration and soccoer moming going on with it.

From the OP link:

It shows crosshairs zeroed in on the back of the head of what appears to be a Palestinian boy in a village.

Hmmmmm.
I looked at the photo.
The crosshairs are 'zeroed in' just above the tip of the left ear.

Anyone want to tell me the child's name?
I mean the picture from behind tells us that he is Palestinian ( appears to be....according to the writer of the story), why wouldn't it also tell us his name and birthdate too?

Here is the deal, you could possibly deduce the child's height from the photograph, past that I'm not swallowing it. It is conjecture to say that the child is Palestinian (he probably is, but there is no proof).

If a photo journalist had taken the picture he probably would have won a pulitzer prize for the photo, but since a soldier took the picture it`s just an evil and satanic picture?
Once again we have proven that one mans art is another mans pornography.

Indeed it is very sad.
It is difficult to tell the ethnic makeup from a photograph of a child's face, let alone the back of their head.
But here is the thing... It is a child. We draw all the lines that make this child a Palestinian, a Jew or whatever other segment you can think of.

As an image, ignoring for a moment the implications of its aquisition, I find this to be striking, stark, and appealing in its simplicity and composition.

However, looking past the pure visual impact of the image (which is considerable) the fact of the matter is, that in order to gain that image, the person who captured it had to rest a rifle in a position which saw it lined up with the back of the head of a small child. Even if said child was a rampant purse thief, cat molestor, arch cretin and street thug in training, this would be a totaly unacceptable situation.

Unless the sniper had an idea that this child was in fact in the middle of masterminding a rocket attack, the sniper should have just passed on. Even if the photographer was merely struck by the perfection of the effect that the image would have had as a photograph, rather than taking the picture for giggles, he should have thought again and decided against it.

That said, I think it is worth noting that now this image does exist, and it is not without depth, not without emotional impact. It is a scene of innocence, veiwed through a lens of war. This is art so pure and raw that I have found myself deeply moved by it, and not negatively either. In a way, the image is beautiful, not because the child is in the crosshairs, implying his doom, but because the child remains intact, defying the sniper by sheer presence.

Of course we know that the kids head wouldnt survive contact with a round launched at it. But that is how the image itself impacted me.

As with your other posts on this thread; well written and thought provoking.

I agree that this image is captivating and (I hope) could become the catalyst for a greater humanitarian effort in Palestine. I'd also like to imagine (without having looked at the other images) that this was this particular soldier's intention, to reveal to the wider world the barbarity of the situation there.

My gut feeling tells me that his intentions were not as noble. Regardless, I hope this image is the one we look back on in years to come as a turning point where the world said, "enough"!

The original photo was posted late January but emerged last week on the pro-Palestinian news site Electronic Intifada. While there is no evidence that the child was shot or if Ostrovski even took the photo himself, a rightful public outrage has forced Ostrovski to delete his Instagram account. The IDF is also launching an investigation on the matter, noting that the photo ”doesn’t accord with the IDF’s spirits and values.”

I only see a young soldier eager to make sensation on Instagram with tough shots. Blown out of proportions, as usual; and the funny thing is that until mass media said is outrageous nobody had problems with this pic.

I say punish and admonish this one soldier for their poor choice of experession. That is about as much knowledge as I have of this and I cannot in good faith clump in the rest of the IDF to say this is systemic.

Do you believe in freedom? Was he infringing on that boy's rights?

My country was invaded 2 times in last 70 years. Occupational forces were legit targets for us! It do not matter if it was Wehrmacht, SS, Hitlerjugend or Russian soldiers. They were brainwashed, all of them, and some of them were less then 16 year old. Still they are legitimate targets. Because they invaded my country. And for them we were terrorists or insurgents at best.
If I was born in Gaza or West bank I would fight the occupational force with all might achievable.
This image is correct:
www.terrasantalibera.org...
Yes, we are enemies till death. I pretty well understand the motivation of IDF soldier. He is brainwashed. His enemies are brainwashed. No one have space to back off. This fight will be fought till very bitter end. There is no chance for peace. Both sides want to exterminate the other side and both have LEGIT reasons to do so.
I do not like government of Israel and I do not like governments of all Arab/Islam countries. I do not like government at all (it sounds like right wing talk, but I'm hard leftist).
So one kid is forced by propaganda to aim his rifle at other kid, who is probably also brainwashed. They should smoke a spliff together instead of killing each other.

Eh.. wrong. The Isreali government has admitted to it, and the guy posted other pictures of himself in uniform. The Israeli government said he wasn't punished for it. They also said something similar had happened before where an IDF soldier abused several prisoners.

So do a little research before coming in here without knowing what you are talking about. You didn't even take the time to read the article before you started spouting your support Israel in all they do rhetoric. It's very ironic that you attacked other posters critical thinking skills while simultaneously making yourself look like a buffoon.

In setting up the scenario where the soldier "maybe, just maybe" had rocks thrown at him by children, you're not only excusing his behavior, but you are also excusing the behavior of soldiers who target entire ethnic groups based on the actions of extremists. So militant Muslim fundamentalists kill Western forces using IEDs. I shouldn't have to tell you this, but that alone doesn't justify the use of lethal force on children of any walk of life.

Jimmy, c'mon man. You can't justify that image by saying MAYBE the kids threw rocks at him. That is dispicable, unacceptable, and sickening to ever aim a weapon at the back of a childs head, i dont care what nationality or what that child threw at you.

I used to read about Israeli soldiers killing innocent children in the Gaza strip and think to myself, its probably propaganda making the soldiers look bad, but now i'm not so sure. Sick world we live in.....

It's disgusting. I'm anti-israel as anybody who knows me knows. Even if I wasn't that isn't acceptable and shows the sick mind of whoever thought it was funny or cool to take a picture of.

However, from a purely artistic point of view I think the image is nicely done. I know it's considered hipster and crap but I do quite like some of these images that get ran through instragram

Not sure if that's considered insensitive or not but if I didn't know the context of the image I'd think it was very cool

I've always known about the issues in the Middle East. But a recent ESPN piece made my stomach turn, and made me wonder what else could be going on if this is happening at soccer matches...

espn.go.com...

It's a well done 15 minute piece that exposes Israeli soccer fans as "the most dangerous fans" in the world. They brainwash their children too...

.....but yeah, that's not cool man.
