You didn't really answer my question, however I will offer an instance where a hard fact - meets an immovable
object.

" I have just been paid in cash - or scored a bunch of fifties, to see me through the weekend"

I rock into your store and produce a fiffty for a hard earned - frappe, apple pie, pepsi ... whatever oh, and the obligatory milk and bread - on the way home.

I don't have change.

This makes me the enemy in this thread?

You were not paid in cash but rather had an auto deposit or a check for payday. Therefore, you had to be in a bank or at an ATM with 20 dollar dispensing.

Why come to me with a 50 or a 100?

Now I do understand some get paid in cash and I know those customers by name and face (I respect and take care of regulars) Many times I give them their bread and such but have not enough change to give back. These are my loyal customers so I just tell them to come back later with smaller bills.

1.5 years and never been ripped off. Why? Respect.

So, I can see your point but customers have to see mine as well. We are small, provide a service and survive day to day as they do.

nah not wealthy. I do accept everyone as they come and deal with it all. In the end it just gets bottled up for so long you snap one day in private, like today...I still smile at them, and die inside every time I realize I need to go to the bank...AGAIN.......lol...

In the end it is a good sign though. I have many customers and they have money. I see that, I do. I just get tired like everyone else.

1-4 whole blocks? To get change you'll need as a business owner to run your business? What a sad, sad story. All those mean people trying to give you money, how do you get by?

You could get more money to accommodate your customers needs. Maybe you wouldn't have to travel those arduous 4 blocks as often. Since when is it the customer's responsibility to make sure you are prepared to do business?

Maybe it's not. It's probably something more like "unprepared".

It's OK i had change for that, so - much thanks!
Nothing wrong with baked beans on toast ... hahaha!

However, next time I will shop elsewhere; as will my friends and associates.

In the US its common for delivery food and fast food joints to have
a sign that states no bills larger than 20$, it is done for employee
safety and also convenience, often if you ask before ordering if it is
ok to use a big bill and they have the change they wont turn you
away.

Having worked in retail i do agree, customers typically don't understand
simply the risk involved in having large sums of money on hand,
in my teen years i worked at a convenience store that was about 3
blocks from the police station, before i started there they had been
robbed twice, and this is in a town that has a very very low crime rate.

Somehow the customer has been sold an idea that their convenience
is worth more than a store clerks life, i don't care what currency you
deal in that's just complete BS, peoples lives are worth more than
5 minutes at a bank,

Customer service is very important, but so is employee safety.

You'll go to Wal-Mart, get no respect or appreciation and contribute to the failing small business sector.

Because you couldn't get change for a 50 at your neighborhood store who is trying to feed his family and didn't have enough in the kitty to give you change for a chocolate bar.

Yeah, I did take the time to go to a Wal-mart on my visit to the U.S. - it is like the phunny photo's . lol.

Not much of an equivalent here in Oz. ( there are some whole suburbs like that though ).
I can totally relate to the "a-hole" super demanding - spend nothing WOFTAM customer.

Unfortunately, they are the ' sucky ' part of any business. We all have them.
As I mentioned earlier, we should look at a possible solution - as a collective.

Meh, I've managed three small businesses during the course of my life and one of the things that I did daily, each and every day, was a bank run - both to deposit the past days $$$ and to get change. Even a small business that is only slightly busy should always have about $200.00 to $300.00 dollars change ( coins, and bills from ones to twenteis ) on hand. During peak seasonal periods, even more.

It is not an exact science and there are certainly days when chance conspires and a certain denomination ends up depleted. However it is one thing to say "I'm sorry, I'm out of twenties. Do you mind getting your change in fives?" than it is to say "I can't break that." The first is an inconvenience to the customer. The latter is a lost sale in most cases.

Also I just want to add that the law is on my side.

This is a big enough problem here that they actually have laws passed where you can deny service or MAKE them go get change.

Buses for example have a 10 euro limit. You hand them a 20...you walk...

A cab might get out and ask for change FOR you, but if it is late at night and nothing is open, they charge you for the trip to anywhere to get change.

I once rebuilt a friends computer and we went to a HUGE super store for parts and they denied the sale worth 60 euros since all he had was a 200 note.....

it is NOT our responsibility.

We will do it of coarse if it means we make a sale, but really it is legally the consumers problem if they have too much or too little to spend....

I agree. Most times it is not a problem, you make due and hand them a wad of what ever..... BUT

My place is regularly packed, and sometimes it is a real pain in the ass when more than half of your customers hand you 50´s at that time of the month.

That entire week I make my daily bank run 3-4 times a day. I also run the risk of being robbed because I have to have several thousand Euros on hand for them.

I understand that there are two sides to this, but I am not alone on my side and I needed to vent. It is a constant "thing".....
