Any pictures of the fleets of fishing trawlers following them?

Whilst it would have been excellent to see, i think a pod that size would have freaked me out. Maybe it's my age, but as VasaCroe pointed out, i would have been thinking Hitch Hikers style!

this is the first thing i thought of. there getting the feck outta doge

I know it's kinda wierd when the boat ISN'T making a lot of noise it's almost as if they are trying to get closer to it and see 'what's wrong'! With the kind of sonar capabilities they have, it's a wonder we can EVER get near them, unless I guess they want to let us get near them? Or they mess with us on purpose for 'treats'! they are just so, so smart !

100,000 Dolphins? is it even possible to 'count' to 100K in one hour? I'm just asking, is the 100,000 a typo, maybe 1000? 10,00? but 100K How did they get this number?

The 100,000 came from the article.

It actually claims that the pod was over 100,000 strong. A little hard to credit but then, how many dolphins fit in an area seven miles wide and 5 miles long?

I don't know but it appears to have been a lot of dolphins.

Perhaps they are migrating?

The wierd thing was, I was just glancing at 'Blue Planet' on the TV and David Attenborough ws talking about 'Mega Pods' being about 500 strong?

When estimating huge numbers, standard practice is to take a manageable area, count the numbers in that area, and then multiply it to cover the whole area. So there may be 100'000 or there may be more or less.

I did search. ATS search function is not the most efficient at times.

I see a few hundred dolphins, not even a thousand in the video. Furthermore why the hell is that boat in the middle of the pod? The coastguard should give that captain a fine.
Now, this is not unusual: dolphins come together in large pods. When the population is growing, bigger "mega"pods will appear, food competition will make that part of the population migrate to other areas. Its probably a sign that dolphin populations are doing well in the area.

Please understand this isn't meant to be negative. The ATS search is strangely clumsy, but it can be used effectively.

Try: 100,000 dolphins

It's about finding a good combo of more rare phrases, etc. Want to find a specific thread about JFK though... forget about it!

Best to you.

Lol, I swear I was going to reference this movie. I remember hearing a story about Kangaroos jumping in packs across a golf course in Australia and I said to myself: They must be taking cover.

You could be onto something there.

For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much - the wheel, New York, wars and so on - whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man - for precisely the same reasons.

So long, and thanks for all the fish. Final message from the Dolphins, as they escape just prior to Earth's destruction.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Curiously enough, the dolphins had long known of the impending destruction of the planet Earth and had made many attempts to alert mankind of the danger; but most of their communications were misinterpreted as amusing attempts to punch footballs or whistle for tidbits, so they eventually gave up and left the Earth by their own means shortly before the Vogons arrived.

Oh come on. Don't be such a cynical old lefty.

The number 100,000 has been carried on a number of outlets.

Very fascinating occurrence if I say so myself. If someone wants awe and wonder in this world, just open your eyes...it's all around us.

BTW...loved that movie...so funny.

Who knows? Maybe the animals are trying to tell us something...
