Doctors demand soft drinks tax

When I was at school I can't even remember any fat kids, maybe one. I'm in my mid 30s so it wasn't too long ago.

So what has happened in those last 20 years. Much of it is to do with the seditary lifestyle people lead. When I was a kid I was playing football every day at school and after school. That's all we did, play football. I've never really been a drinker of soft drinks or eaten at fast food restaurants, not to say I haven't enjoyed them at some point, but everything in moderation. Hard to believe some kids now eat fast food every day.

Still it's difficult to avoid high fat and surgery foods. I was in Marks and Spencer's food hall the other day and would say about 80% of the shelves were stacked with fatty and sugary foods.

Remember the Olympics, sponsored by Cadbury's and walkers crisps, not to mention the legacy of leaving the worlds largest McDonald's. now there's an Olympic legacy. All the athletes now advertising fast food chains and the like. Maybe if we placed more value on the health of our kids than the profit motive, things might be different.

Something needs to be done, but that something is not another sin tax, but getting kids active and educated. Walk to bloody school for an example.

The problem is the obesity is causing a major strain on a weak NHS.

The food industry taught us to snack between meals, stuffed everything full of corn syrup (which was cheaper than ordinary sugar) and stacked the supermarket shelves with low fat but high sugar, high salt foods.

They also buried the scientific research that pointed towards high sugar, high salt foods being much worse than high fat foods.

If obesity is going to be tackled, it is the food industry that needs to be tamed.

The same doctors that overprescribe antibiotics, peddle anti depressants and various medications with bad side effects? Those guys?
Taxes are fantastic, they made me quit smoking, driving, shopping and all that bad stuff.

Stop the PC practice of non-competitive sports and allow children to play - nearly every piece of green land in the UK has a 'No Ball Games' sign on it.

And generate some decent paying jobs and provide some affordable housing so people earn enough money so that they don't have to buy cheap and crap foods because that's all they can afford.

This is just another way of charging over the odds for something. People that want to drink coke will still drink coke. Adding 20p on top of the current price won't change that.

The vice is cloosing and none of you should be surprised. What did you expect?

Let me get "prophetic" for a minute here, there is war brewing over, and the "brewers" will hide in a vault, while the water bearers leave the legacy of treachery and smears of meat on a vault door.

Why don't they put pictures of people with rotten teeth and obese people on the bottles, like the graphic pics they have on cigs?

The government should not be involved with such things as this.

They have too much power anyways.

Are they going to tax a certain toilet paper also, after all I bet the more abrasive paper causes more colon cancer. Sarcastically

I've got no idea what you're saying here.

First of all, soft drinks are not the healthiest thing out there. Not that you shouldn't drink them, but more than a few a day is going to be hard on the body after years and years.

That being said, the government openly trying to tax something in such a way to control how much a person can afford is EXACTLY the same as the government putting a LIMIT on how much a person can legally buy, in my opinion.

But would the pictures of obese people fit on the side of the bottles?

I do agree that this obesity problem has to be dealt with on the supply side rather than by taxing the demand side to death.

So someone who drinks hard liquor with pop, you get the sin tax, and the junk food tax, all in one drink.

I think this is the new philosophy in life, if you can't ban it. Tax it!
