Cantor: children of illegal immigrants should get U.S. citizenship

Eric Cantor, a top Republican lawmaker, has stated that he would grant citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants, a concept he has previously opposed.

"The best place to begin, I think, is with the children. Let's go ahead and get that under our belt, put a win on the board," Cantor said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

President Barack Obama has made immigration reform a top priority of his second term in office and a bipartisan group of senators is working to draft legislation that would tackle the issue in a comprehensive manner, rather than the piecemeal approach that Cantor suggested.

Republican Senator John McCain, who is involved in that effort, said his group aims to provide a path to citizenship for all of those who are in the United States illegally, not just children, as long as border security is tightened.

Republicans are arguably afraid that if they don't reach out to the Latino community, by supporting immigration reform, they are destined for election irrelevancy.

Taking a less partisan point of view, when people become citizens they then take on the rights and duties of a citizen, including paying taxes. It is also true that the USA needs more people if it is to successfully compete with China's 1.3 billion people in the 21st century. A similar logic is permitting the high levels of immigration into Western Europe.

If I am not mistaken, the USA already operates a citizenship program for illegal immigrant children if they are academically gifted.

Cantor refused to state whether he would support immigration amnesty for adults as well.

So wait, does this mean if the children also come into the country illegally, then they will have the possibility of becoming a US citizen?

Because I know if an "illegal" comes to America and has a child they are considered an American citizen.. or so I thought..

But if this is true I partially believe this is the beginning steps to loosening up the illegal immigrant deal. First you legalize the kids and well.. since the kids are legalized..you might as well legalize the parents..

Presumably he was referring to the children of immigrants who were not born in the USA.

I really don't have a problem with this as long as 3 conditions are met:

1) They can't vote for 10 years.
2) They can never own or possess firearm.
3) They are ineligible for public assistance for 10 years.

This is too funny but hey...
It's the right thing to do so kudos to Eric Cantor for waking up.

Hopefully more GOP members will see the light and realize that their gestapo ways of dealing with immigrants will not get them very far with the growing minority community.

Giving a chance to the children that were brought here by their parents is the humane thing to do.

Children born on US Territory are automatically citizens, but that's not the way the law used to be. And that's not the way the law works in MOST of the rest of the world. Thank Ted Kennedy fro driving that one off the bridge too ! My wife was recently flagged at a traffic stop as being a 'foreign national' because she told the deputy that she was born in Scotland, 3 days later, and many, many phone calls with ICE, it finally dawned on them that my wife 1) Had a father that was in the US Air Force, in Scotland on active duty 2) that my wife had served in a U.S. armed service reserve component for 6 years, 3 of those overseas. 3) that she had been the subject of a special background investigation by the dept of defense, when I put in paperwork to recieve a top secret security clearance. The last call we got from ICE was to let us know that my wife 'probably' met the qualifications for US citizenship, but they couldn't FIND her 'naturalization' number! I refered them back to fact one, and the razor sharp individual on the other end of the line said 'oh, yeah, she WOULDN'T have a naturalization number would she? We'lll never get this straight again from this point on. BECAUSE the government is involved.

I don't think it is fair to cater to the children of illegals. It only serves to reward the law breaking parents and encourage more illegal immigration. It is insulting to all those who are coming through the proper channels. We can't just pick and choose who must follow laws and who can ignore them.
