There is a 70% chance anything that may fall will fall into the ocean. The repercussions of this happening could be major. I am no physicist but am curious the impact of a 150,000 ton object at 30k Mph could have in terms of tsunamis.

I know it isn't (supposed) to hit, but if such a similar sized object in the future was to impact the earth, do we know roughly what percentage would be burned off as it enters the atmosphere?

The planet won't survive a near miss with this asteroid. The wording is wrong.

Quoting George Carlin:

"Here's one they just made up: "near miss". When two planes almost collide, they call it a near miss. It's a near hit. A collision is a near miss."

I would love to...but I can't, I was picturing it in my head and the rough model I made looked like it made sense but I forgot to bring into account the time this happened, I found a better diagram of the event...

The live feed is now active!

This thing will NOT hit us, but it will be a cool show.

Enjoy!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't something this size hit the earth not too long ago? I mean, even if this thing did hit, it wouldn't be an extinction event right? It's only half the size of a football field.

I am a more concerned with satellites getting smashed into knocking it off its trajectory...

No, only binoculars or telescope.

Too cloudy here anyway. Unless it comes in much closer and bounces off the atmosphere

and then there`s this comet ison:

discovered Comet ISON on September 21, 2012. NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program Office, based at JPL, has plotted its orbit and determined that the comet is more than likely making its first-ever sweep through the inner solar system.

It seems that ison is a new visitor into our neighborhood and we didnt even know that it existed until just a few months ago.

The universe is a dangerous place we should consider ourselves lucky that mankind on planet earth has survived so long.
