Like a hurricane, a galaxy has "storm bands". Unlike a hurricane, the bands are not rain bands, they are rock bands. Not Led Zeppelin rock bands, but bands of rock and ice. Our solar system is exiting a quiet zone, and is approaching a danger zone, or "rain band" in the Milky Way Galaxy. In a few million years or so, we should be well into it. The closer we get to the band, the more these things are going to occur. I am not saying that the SHTF yet, but I think it's a semi-related topic that is worth sharing.

Well ok, if you want to take the fun out of it!
I prefer my idea and i would volunteer to be the operator.

"Flavian, assume the position. An asteroid is on the way"

"Ok, sir, slipping into the tennis outfit now and just donning the Ceremonial Sweatbands of Doom Prevention".

Still, your idea would probably be more effective!

I think this is the sign of our Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere weakened right now...We will see a lot of meteor showers in upcoming years..

To all that have been querying my choice of words.

Fatalities refers to deaths.

Casualties refers to those injured, regardless of severity.

Talk about totally bizarre... 725 people reportedly injured just blows my mind away....

The messed up thing is that my GF and I were watching asteroid/comet shows on the discovery channel last night and then I wake up to this....

As of noon Moscow time, as many as 725 people had sought medical help, according to the state-run RIA Novosti news agency.

I don’t know about you guys but the story sounds fishy to me.

500 injuries and 20.000 service men have been working on it..? it sounds unreal to me.

The meteor over the Urals was a fragment from asteroid 2012 DA14.

The fragment was ejected forward (hence got here first) after the successful mission on the 28th Jan to adjust 2012 DA14's Earth bound trajectory.

Further larger fragments that are following behind 2012 DA14 will hit the Pacific ocean and North American continent over the next 3 days. No major damage expected, so don't panic.

If only you'd told us on page 1....

Now they'll have to fill all this wasted server space with zeros.

I know it's not the most reliable source, but on the news this morning, they said that scientists are saying that it is NOT related to the asteroid that is set to pass Earth today.

A better question might be this: Why is this area in recent history so prone to events like this?

The tunguska Event was less than 150 years ago, and now this. We almost never hear of events on this scale, but here we have 2 in a relatively short cosmic time period. Why Siberia?

Why? What do you think the appropriate response should be when over 950 people have been injured and potentially upto 6 cities affected?

That is not the crater, has been debunked already that thing has been there for a long time and is caused by natural gases

This is why dyson sphere assistance and shielding would work? out there.

A Dyson sphere is a hypothetical megastructure originally described by Freeman Dyson. Such a "sphere" would be a system of orbiting solar-power satellites meant to completely encompass a star and capture most or all of its energy output. Dyson speculated that such structures would be the logical consequence of the long-term survival and escalating energy needs of a technological civilization, and proposed that searching for evidence of the existence of such structures might lead to the detection of advanced intelligent extraterrestrial life.
