You know how if you work in an office, sometimes there are betting pools? People will bet 5$ on when someone is going to have a baby .. or 5$ on a football pool ... that kind of thing?

How about an ATS betting pool for who is going to be the next pope? I think that would be fun. It would cost 100 points to enter the pool. Whoever guesses which Cardinal is named next pope would get the points. If two people guess the same cardinal, then they split the points. Maybe some kind of bonus if they guess the correct name that the Cardinal takes as well.

We could do it with lots of things. Point pool bets now and then.

Or do you think that's too much work for someone to do??

I think it would be fun. Every so often have a 'point pool' bet. If no one wins that point pool bet, then all the points put in the pool would roll over into the next bet.

Last I saw, there were 211 Cardinals in the Catholic Church. My 'short list' for guesses has 10. And no .. the heavy press favorite (Cardinal Peter Turkson) is not on my short list of guesses. (and I have the name for the 'bonus')

A pope hasn't used his baptismal name since the 1500s.

ETA .. I'm googling and can't find any catholic law saying they can't take the name peter.

It's an unwritten rule.

I would bet any amount of money that the new pope doesn't take the name Peter as his name.

I would think a Pope could take the name of Satan himself if he really wanted to. Wouldn't go over well, but I doubt there's a rule against what name he is allowed to take.
