The author also points out that the cost of using the mandated policies will be prohibitive because of the large deductibles and co-pays. Many Americans will find themselves not only with a policy they can’t afford, but also with one they cannot afford to use. Those who cannot afford the insurance, even with a subsidy, will be faced with a costly penalty, and in many cases, this, too, will be difficult, if not impossible, to pay. As each year’s subsidy is based on last year’s income, there will be a substantial year-end tax liability for those who must repay the subsidy in whole or part because their income increased during the year. The stress alone from such a regressive scheme is, without a doubt, not conducive to good health and well-being.

This is what I suspected all along. Even if one does purchase the mandated health care insurance, in many cases the individual would find the deductibles unaffordable. The deductibles and co-insurance payments are ridiculous:

The author provides an example of a 35 year-old with a MAGI of $27,925. The out-of- pocket cost to this person of a Silver level plan (second least expensive) is $187.33 per month. This cost is based on pre-tax income, that is, before income is reduced by payroll and income taxes. There goes the car payment or utility bill. The lives of millions of Americans will change drastically as they struggle with a new, large expense – particularly in an era of no jobs, low-paying jobs and rising cost of living.

Here are the current estimates:

Bronze: cheapest and dry as dust with 60/40 coverage – a win-win for insurers a) annual deductible of $4,375 for an individual (double for a family) with 20 percent coinsurance, b) annual deductible of $3,475 for an individual (double for a family) with 40 percent coinsurance

Silver: next cheapest – offers an illusion of coverage at 70/30 a) annual deductible of $2,050 for an individual (double for a family) with 20 percent coinsurance, b) annual deductible of $650 for an individual (double for a family) with 40 percent coinsurance

Gold: expensive – 80/20 – better coverage

Platinum: most expensive – 90/10 – most comprehensive coverage

This is the most comprehensive (and easy to understand) analysis of the lovely caveats in the ACA that I have come across. It is a long article but a worthy read. As the saying goes..."The devil is in the details."

Once upon a time, there was a bad bill called the Affordable Care Act. Then, as if the whims of fate and Gods of bad legislation weren't laughing hard enough already, this bad bill was put through the meat grinder of partisan hatred and agenda driven gotcha politics.

When said bill emerged beaten, bloody and looking a little less than it entered, despite the enormous growth in pages? We were told we had to pass it to learn what was in it.....and watched those same arrogant law makers make jokes and great fun of calls to actually read the law they were passing for generations to be held to. Such humor they found in the mere idea of READING what they were elected to understand before casting their precious vote. I'm still disgusted by the whole show.

The end result of this scary tale? The ACA, which never was all that good to begin with, emerged almost entirely stripped of what good it HAD been ready to do in the limited ways it still could. Now, we're left with almost all of the bad it started with, almost none of the good (coverage for all or close to it) and a growing state of legislative civil war between states outlawing the ACA and Obama just determined with all he has to push it over the top of 330 million people.

If nothing else, the fight this brings will be a time of history being made we'll all be able to live through and see up close. I'm not sure that's anything positive.

This is just going to create a huge mess, it isn`t going to create a big increase in insured people it`s just going to create financial hardship for a lot of people and make a few people richer.

Low income people who can`t afford health insurance will just continue to use the emergency room for health care and not pay the bill just like they are already doing.obamacare is just going to make low income people pay for the privilege of not having health insurance and doing what they are already doing for free.

People who can afford health insurance already have health insurance, people who can`t afford still won`t be able to afford it even when the government threatens to fine them, tax them or throw them in jail for not having it.
Government threats have never increased a persons annual income.

So the Silver plan is only $187 a month? Perfect! That's pretty cheap for health insurance.

this^
The author is biased and compares it to a car payment. But what about the person who buys a pack of cigarettes a day, or you know what, let's just use a cup of coffee as an example. 3 bucks for a cup of coffee*30 days. That's $90 a month. I'm not saying people shouldn't have their coffeee, because I KNOW most americans spend more than 180 bucks a month on other stuff they don't need. I'm only bringing up the cost point because he brought it up first.

Those plans may seem bad to you, with your current healthcare, but they sure beat having no healthcare, and the people on the plans are the ones who previously didn't have healthcare.

You won't get thrown in jail. Quit spreading lies!
Same with the gold package getting preferential treatment over bronze package.
Why are you spreading fear-mongering lies?

Why would a hospital or doctor care what level plan you have...they will still get paid the same amount, the only difference is how much the insurance pays and how much you pay.

Stop trying to spread mis-information.

No you will not be in jail that is truth, but you will be taxed to death kind of that is why the IRS is going to be the enforcer of taxes in the name of fines, this fines will look like ok in the first year, but after that they will be increased indefinitely until you are so much in fine debt that you as well give away all your worthy possessions to pay back.

Now as for Pre-existing conditions that could not be deny insurance if you have then, well just recently this pre-existing conditions, life style and "vices" like smoking and drinking are going to make your "mandated" insurance very expensive on added expenses that will be tag by existing health concern, this is just another none regulated loophole in the Obamacare that will be exploited by the infamous all for profits insurance companies

Welcome to slavery AKA Obamacare.

Sure, if you never have to see a doctor. But if you do see a doctor you will need to pay the $2050 deductible out of pocket first plus your co-insurance payment. And of course it's rinse and repeat every year.

yes you will go to jail. What happens if you dont have heathcare? you get fined by the IRS. what happens if you cant pay the IRS, you go to jail.

Or the IRS just sells your house to pay for your taxes and you live on the street.

Sorry the truth to you is fear mongering.

That`s right, and what happens when you don`t pay your taxes? remember the supreme court has ruled that this is indeed a tax and not a fine. What happens when you don`t pay your taxes?
You are charged a criminal count of tax evasion and face criminal penalties for tax evasion as well possible confiscation and auctioning off of your personal property to repay the taxes you evaded.
This is a tax just like any other tax and they can legally enforce the collection of this tax using the same legal methods as they would use to enforce the collection of any other tax.

That's not true either. While the act does call for these taxes, it doe not in any way provide an avenue for the IRS to pursue collection. The fact remains that $187 a month for health insurance is a good price. Have you priced insurance lately? I bet you can't come up with comparable insurance for less than $400-500 a month.

The IRS already has an avenue to legally collect taxes, they don`t need special permission or laws to collect one tax over another. A tax is a tax and the IRS has legal avenues for collecting taxes from tax evaders.
Has the IRS ever let large groups of people evade paying taxes and not pursued legal avenues to enforce the collection of those taxes? Not that i`m aware of and i doubt that they will allow tax evasion in this case to go unenforced.
It`s not like the country is swimming in money and the government can afford to let millions of people evade paying their obamacare tax.

I am very surprised that you until this day has not follow up what is going on with the Obamacare that keeps growing more and more as the days goes by.

The dream care package that was sold to the gullible American public is now a monstrosity

Supreme Court Obamacare Ruling Means Bigger, More Intrusive IRS

Sorry to say this but that is where the IRS will come into to collect TAXES aka fines.

The Supreme Court ruling on Obamacare gives the IRS more powers than ever, as it will become the agency enforcing the law and collecting healthcare mandate penalties, IRS officials tell Fox Business Network.

IRS officials, speaking on background, say the agency will have access to information about complete payrolls and levels of coverage at small businesses, as well as the incomes of all breadwinners in a home in order to assess and collect the mandate tax, Fox said.

The IRS will also be allowed to share personal information with more government agencies, insurance companies and employers.

The IRS will add about 4,500 new employees, 4,000 of them for enforcement, to catch tax evaders, and it has budgeted $304 million to build a new computer system to oversee the Affordable Care Act, according to the Government Accountability Office, Fox said.

www.moneynews.com...

Now remember a "flat" rate is not the same after you add the out of pocket expenses and deductibels that can run in the thousands per insured individual
