The South Korean Defence Ministry, which raised its military alert level after the quake, said it was trying to determine whether it was a test. Nuclear blasts can create tremors but they are distinct from those caused by natural earthquakes. A UN nuclear test monitoring organization detected what it called an "unusual seismic event" in North Korea. Kim Min-seok, a South Korean Defence Ministry spokesman, also told reporters that North Korea informed China and the United States of its plans to conduct a nuclear test. It was not clear when Pyongyang told Beijing and Washington. The U.S. Geological Survey as well as earthquake monitoring stations in South Korea detected an earthquake just north of a site where North Korea conducted its second nuclear test in 2009, according to the government-funded Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources.

It really pisses me of that I was sent to Iraq for WMDs and while I was their NK developed nukes. Talk about dropping the ball.

Every time NK is in dire trouble they do something like this as leverage for foreign aid. While I was stationed in SK before they had nukes and things heated up they started trying to infiltrate across the border and fired on some ships SK went on lock down then eventually we sent them food and oil and things went back to normal.

When they want something they throw a world class temper tantrum that usually costs lives. Two years ago firing missiles over the boarder into towns.

This is them basically threatening and saying give me or else.

This compares the new test to the old ones.. Red is New..

See how it just starts without ramping up? Nuke test...

Definitely stronger than the last one, but not a 10 kiloton..

Congratulations to North Korea.

Now perfect those long range ballistic missiles and the world will no longer F with you.

North Korea, the worlds newest Nuclear armed power.

Now feed your damn people and play ball with the world so sanctions can be removed and you can become fruitful.

Pope resign and then we got the biggest nuke test detonation from NK
something is in the air ..

Coincidence ?

Then we have China biggest military deployment preparing for a war with Japan
and lets not forget the Syrian situation with Iran after the latest Israeli air strike
more could come soon from Nato ally

the tension in the world has never been so high
NK probably know that things might get uglier soon in the entire region
by making this nuke test happen they are saying .. dont mess with us

nobody should condemn that nuke test from NK .. at least they didnt nuke anyone
there is only 1 country that did that and TWICE on 2 civilian cities full of innocent people

I don't follow the connection between the Pope calling it quits and N. Korea conducting a nuke test.

The Pope has been saying for at least a couple of years now he was gonna quit and N. Korea has already done nuke tests in the past. Now if the Pope's statements of wanting to quit coincide with N. Korea's past nuke tests then you may be on to something.

I get a kick out of reading the N Korean state newspaper.

Here's some of yesterday's news:

Recalling that Kim Jong Il developed the Korean People's Army into the invincible revolutionary armed forces and turned the DPRK into a nuclear weapons state which no enemy dares provoke, the paper stressed that these feats would last forever.

The Korean people are celebrating Feb. 16 as the Day of the Shining Star, the paper said, and went on:

Pyongyang, February 11 (KCNA) -- Figures of Democratic Congo and Indonesia released statements on Feb. 3 and 4 denouncing the UN Security Council's "resolution" against the DPRK over its legitimate satellite launch. Jimmy Kikoni, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Democratic Congo, said: The U.S. and its allies cooked up the illegal UN Security Council "resolution" against the Korean people. This clearly shows the ulterior intention of the imperialists to monopolize space science and technology and the right to satellite launch. We fully support the DPRK's launch of satellite for peaceful purposes and will stand firm by the Korean people for defending the sovereignty of the country. No country has the right to encroach upon the sovereignty of other countries and nations. Long live the dear respected supreme leader Comrade Kim Jong Un!

Oh my, this is the best! Are you all preparing for the big day?

Preparations for Celebrating Day of Shining Star Brisk Worldwide

Pyongyang, February 11 (KCNA) -- Preparations are brisk worldwide to celebrate the birth anniversary of leader Kim Jong Il most significantly and grandly.

Preparatory committees have been formed in more than 50 countries and regions, including Russia, Indonesia, Mongolia, Iran, Pakistan, Guinea, Democratic Congo, South Africa, Uganda, France, Italy, Poland, Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Ecuador, since the formation of the British preparatory committee for marking the Day of the Shining Star on Jan. 12.

Preparatory committees of the Korean Friendship Association and the International Alliance of Societies for the Study of the Juche Idea and Songun Policy in East European and Central Asian Regions were also inaugurated.

At the inaugural ceremonies officials of political parties, governments and organizations of relevant countries highly praised the undying feats Kim Jong Il performed for the Korean revolution and the human cause of independence and vowed to work hard to grandly celebrate the Day of the Shining Star as the holiday common to humankind.

Maybe they are just setting of nukes for the big birthday celebration?

Japan was on the receiving end of atomic fission warheads. 16 and 20 kiloton warheads equal to 20,000 tons of TNT.

A small thermonuclear warhead of today can easily produce a blast equal to 1.2 million tons of TNT.

Not really comparable, are they?

Oh and from another article, they claim the British said this:

His concluding speech serves as important guidelines for bolstering up the military muscle of socialist Korea and a landmark of great significance in the general advance of the Songun revolution, it said.

The KPA is standing on the forefront for defending socialism, it noted.

The U.S. imperialist warmongers and the south Korean puppet forces will not be able to escape a shameful defeat in face of the powerful KPA and Songun Korea led by Marshal Kim Jong Un, it added.

I know there are a lot of Brits out there in ATS land, are your politicians saying that?

yeah afraid this is the nuke test we've all been anticipating it would be a huge coincidence if it was a natural quake.

i wouldn't be surprised if they follow up with another test in the coming days to get more bang for your buck since they are going to get sanctions no matter what .

the NK nuclear blackmail of Seoul will see food aid still being sent North.

Don't panic yet....it seems to take them about 3 years to scrape together the money to build each one.

Hopefully, they have to stuff the piggy bank again so we can rest a bit.
