So....was just checking the Fed Biz Ops on their site and saw that they have put out a request for 25 million rounds of 7.62 ammo. Is that a normal request for the Army? That seems like a LOT of 7.62.

This solicitation number W15QKN-13-R-0007 replaces old solicitation number W15QKN-12-R-E011.

Description: 7.62mm M973 (Ball) and M974 (Tracer) Short Range Training Ammunition
This is a synopsis prepared in accordance with the format in FAR Subpart 5.2, as supplemented with additional information included in this notice. This announcement will be followed by a written solicitation. The solicitation will request proposals when issued.

The U.S Army Contracting Command, ACC-New Jersey intends to solicit, negotiate, and award a firm fixed price Indefinite Delivery/ Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract on a sole source basis for the manufacturing, testing, packaging, and delivery of 7.62mm M973 (Ball) and M974 (Tracer) Short Range Training Ammunition (SRTA) linked in a four (4) ball to one (1) tracer configuration (AA37) as well as an all ball configuration (AB60) using Link, Cartridge, Metallic Belt M13 links. The Government intends to award one IDIQ contract, under the authority of FAR 16.504(c)(1)(ii)(B), under Request for Proposal (RFP) # W15QKN-13-R-0007 to General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems- Canada at 5 Montee des Arsenaux, Le Gardeur, Quebec, Canada, J5Z 2P4. The estimated contract ceiling quantity for the contemplated contract is 25 million rounds each with five one-year ordering periods, total time not to exceed five years from date of award. The minimum guarantee for any resultant contract is approximately $3,500,000.00.

This procurement is rated quote mark DO-A6 quote mark for national defense use, and all provisions of the Defense Priorities and Allocation System Regulation (15 CFR 700) apply.

Interested persons may identify their interest and capability to respond to the requirement or submit proposals.

The Request for Proposal for this action will be available for download on Federal Business Opportunities at www.fbo.gov... on approximately 12 October, 2012. Proposals will be required within fourteen (14) days of the date of release of the RFP. All information is to be submitted at no cost or obligation to the Government.

These freakin guys are pinching us out of the market, I cant find ammo anywhere and when i do its rationed. This is nuts.

That round size is .308 civy round. Its for medium range snipers.

One theory is, apparently all ammo production is now allocated. First is the military, then L.E., last is civilian purchases. Huge backlogs are occuring.

A huge gov't order followed by another restricts the sales to civilians...read that thee and me...slick.

This proposed procurement is for .40 caliber ball ammunition (minimum quantity of 75 BX, maximum quantity of 23,077 BX; 1 BX = 1,300 rounds) and .40 caliber jacketed hollow point ammunition (minimum quantity of 75 BX, maximum quantity of 23,077 BX) manufactured in accordance with government specifications and drawings.

A quantity of 1,200 complete cartridges (each type) is required as product samples to be provided at solicitation closing. Award of 5-year firm-fixed price Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract is anticipated. Delivery is required within 120 days after effective date of contract award, FOB destination, with inspection and acceptance performed at source.

If the Army is asking for Ammo 7.62 cal, I don't think its out of the ordainary considering they just got their budgets, remember the fiscal year for the Military is from Oct- Sept.

Having used 7.62 ammo on my tank during training excersise I would go through about 1200 rounds in one training mission. We had to qualify twice a year. Take that and multipily that by how ever many tanks we have plus how many other machine guns the Infantry have.

Remember this each tank has two M240, 7.62 machine guns, Don't know how many the infanty has but it all adds up, I would be looking for something more out of the normal than this.

Unfortunately the 2nd amendment does not cover the federal government tying up all the munitions companies with their juicy purchases. A gun without ammunition is pretty useless. Bullets require no messy Constitutional hocus-pocus to make disappear.

Never fear: while you may not be able to get what you need, your tax dollars sure can. It's the free market at work. You would want more for your dollar but the Feds have no compunction out paying all comers. They didn't earn it anyway. If they run out of tax revenue, heck they will just ask the Fed Res to create some more.

What will they do with all this ammo? What will they do with all the weapons they have purchased? With all the cool MRAP's? High speed surveillance drones?

...why nothing of course. What are you, some conspiracy nut?

While exploring the other day I only found one outlet that had the 7.62 in stock and was told that when it was sold it was being sold in the 500 to 1000 round cases at a time. They are running low. All other places are saying they do know if or when they will ever receive another shipment of any ammo. especially for some strange reason 9mm. If this is any clue I hope it helps.

If they are buying tracer rounds along with the ball rounds then I would imagine it is going to be for belt fed weapons. The most common is the M240G Machine gun and it's many variants. If it is the Army buying this ammo I wouldn't put it in the 'something to worry about column'. Now if it goes to the DHS then I might raise a few flags. There are alot of M240Gs in the military and that is not a ton of ammo when you count them all up. They are found in everything from Infantry units, Tanks and Armored Vehicles, and to supply and other rear echlon units. It is probably the most common machine gun used service wide. It is also my personal favorite.

This happened a few years back to. If you were looking for ammo, 9mm and 45 ammo was not even seen for about 6 months. If it's for the military, ahhhh, not to concerning, However, why in the hell does NOAA need ammo? If someone can enlighten me on this one, I'd really appreciate it. Do they pull an Elvis on computer monitors if they predict a weather pattern wrong???

I just went out this morning after I learned of a shipment at a local vendor. By the time I got there...Zip, Nil, Nadda. I'm still sitting OK with pistol ammo (because I have not gone shooting)
But I got caught with my pants down on .22. I can find any .22 variant anywhere... Online its' just some funky stuff in small qty. that I don't need to use or waste money on.

Its getting ridiculous. My local gun show is this Weekend. Should be quite interesting. Not sure If I should expect a big turnout or not. Everyone is just about of everything....

Regarding the DHS stockpile. They are definitely hoarding....
