I decided this was worthy of group discussion. Trends are often not the result of any one thing. I'm interested to know what people think of this.

According to SocialBakers , memberships have dipped for Facebook in the last month in most countries.

Here is a graphic for membership changes over the last 6 months:

Notice all the GREEN. This indicates a GROWTH in memberships over this interval.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now let's look at a graphic for membership changes over the last month:

Notice all the RED. This indicates a DECLINE in memberships over this interval.

So what do you guys and gals think are some of the reasons behind this recent decline?

I would suggest that people are sick of the discrepancy between what people imagine and post their lives as, and the world we experience each day with the people around us.

Furthermore, I'd suggest that people are thinking it's not safe to post all their personal information online. Data mining is a reality many are becoming aware of. Stories of people being fired, or evidence from FB being used against them in court is traveling fast.

You mean it's not that "cool" to:

Post 1000's of pictures of myself by the mirror? And get mad when people get perverted?
Consistantly make "status updates" to all my "friends" because it really matters?
Take everything personally and put my entire life online for everyone to read?
Then completely breakdown when someone offends me or belittles my pictures?
How about when people get consumed with gossip? That's not "cool" anymore?
Maybe when my entire family and friends are on Fakebook but I don't call them?
How about if I base my entire life on how many "likes" I get when I post a comment?
Maybe it's because I need more attention from everyone?

This list maybe extreme, but it fits the majority of people I know.

Or maybe people are just realizing that a world exists without social networks.
Get outside and live!

(Try not to worry about posting pictures of said world on Fakebook)

And no...
I don't have an account and never will.
ATS is good enough.

That's why I do my best not to know the majority of people I interact with.

Living outside usually requires interacting with organic, social networks.

For sure. No account here, either.
People should pick their social networks wisely.
