I've studied Christianity, Judaism, and Islam relatively extensively and there is a lot of information that most people do not seem to know.
What these extremists are doing and saying is not really in line with the teachings of their religion, and rather they are misconstruing them.
Anyone ever wonder why Saladin did not kill any of the Christians after he sacked Jerusalem during the Crusades? That may have had more to do with his ethics than religion, but still, he practiced Islam and led an all Muslim army.
Now with that said, there are quite a few reasons why I believe Islam to be an amalgamation of Judaism and Christianity,
Anyway, there is evidence in Muhammed's own sayings and teachings that indicate his understanding of these other two religions he so admired was limited. I find it hard to believe that someone who is a prophet would not understand the teachings that their new religion is based on.
.... he also thought Jesus was born to a virgin because of an actual physical act with a heavenly being.
Anyway, Islam does not hold that Jesus is divine, and they say he was a prophet, sort of like the Jews.

Sems to me that part of the problem lies in 'men' cherry picking sections and interpreting them in such a way as to further their own agenda's and to exploit and control other 'men' - pretty much the same as any religion.
The problem with that interpretation is that Muhammad's messages became more and more violent as he grew more powerful.
In the quotations below, Western writers have used the word Muhammadanism for Islam. The word Muhammadanism connotes worship of Muhammad, an absolutely unworthy statement for any learned man to use. Prophet Muhammad's mission was to propagate the worship of the One and Only God (in Arabic Allah), the Creator and Sustainer of the Universe. His mission was essentially the same as that of earlier Prophets of God. In the historical context, many such terminologies about Muhammad, Islam, and Muslims were borrowed from earlier European writings of the Eleventh to the Nineteenth century, a time when ignorance and prejudice prevailed. The quotations below attest to the facts.
Thomas Carlyle in 'Heroes and Hero Worship and the Heroic in History,' 1840
"The lies (Western slander) which well-meaning zeal has heaped round this man (Muhammad) are disgraceful to ourselves only."
"A silent great soul, one of that who cannot but be earnest. He was to kindle the world, the world’s Maker had ordered so."
Edward Gibbon and Simon Oakley in ‘History of the Saracen Empire,’ London, 1870
"The greatest success of Mohammad’s life was effected by sheer moral force."
“It is not the propagation but the permanency of his religion that deserves our wonder, the same pure and perfect impression which he engraved at Mecca and Medina is preserved after the revolutions of twelve centuries by the Indian, the African and the Turkish proselytes of the Koran....The Mahometans have uniformly withstood the temptation of reducing the object of their faith and devotion to a level with the senses and imagination of man. ‘I believe in One God and Mahomet the Apostle of God’ is the simple and invariable profession of Islam. The intellectual image of the Deity has never been degraded by any visible idol; the honors of the prophet have never transgressed the measure of human virtue, and his living precepts have restrained the gratitude of his disciples within the bounds of reason and religion.”

If you had studied his life OBJECTIVELY, you would have realized that he was no warmonger once he gained Arabia and the tribes loyalties.

.
On the other hand, the tribute he extracted from his conquered, non Muslim, subjects could be very heavy.
For instance, in 628 Muhammad and his army of 2,000 attacked a Jewish tribe in Khaibar. After the Jews surrendered Muhammad demanded an annual tribute of half of their produce, while the land itself became part of the Muslims state.
Battle of Khaybar
In the aftermath of the battle, the Banu Nadir tribe were not so fortunate apparently. They were given no quarter and the females were divided between Muhammad and his men.
