I myself am a rock hound and have been harrassed by LEOs. I had an officer mark my car to be towed when I was legally parked off the right of way on public land. I was close enough to observe his behavior and watched him run my plates, carefully search my Isuzu Trooper through the windows after he found my doors were locked. After he left I quickly returned to my car and drove off. Another time I had my son and two of his friends rock hounding and an off duty county sheriff stopped and asked me what I was doing with these boys out in the mountains. Apparently if you are picking up rocks you pose the threat of throwing them!

I don't know why none of you have joined the dots yet.
Maybe it's because most are not familiar with the area. Understandable.
I live close by in the desert.

That area in the Mojave (Hesperia/Victorville) is in spitting distance from Big Bear, as seen in the background mountains.
The big freeway you can see is the Interstate 15 that leads directly to Las Vegas...from the Big Bear area.
The date this was filmed...Friday Feb 8th....when it was said that 10,000 cops were in a multistate search for Dorner, by foot, road and air.

Here are the dots: Big Bear...San Bernadino Mts....I-15 to Las Vegas.......Duh! All these are Dorner's 'territory'.

Police were on high alert...for what? For anything even slightly out of the ordinary. What else could they look for?
Anybody parked on the side of the freeway and walking around in that barren desert would look suspicious at that time, as long as it was clear that their car wasn't broken down and needed help.
Think about it: that cop would have been there to lend assistance to these people if they were in any car trouble!

Considering the serious nature of the search for Dorner, that cop did exactly what he was supposed to do that day, which was to ask for and record the identity of these people; that could come in useful in a later search for any accomplices that could be aiding Dorner in his 'escape'. They'd be 'on record' as having been in the vicinity, other than driving through.

As for the filming of this whole thing, if I were the cop, I too would have landed the heli to see why these people were acting so defiantly by following him on camera. That woman was asking for trouble with her cockiness.

And to further clear things up, the camera was hanging around her neck and was rolling througout the whole sequence. He probably wasn't aware of it filming him.

The LEO shouldn't do anything that would be worth filming. Like try to search the woman's pockets when she did not consent to a search.

Filming a helicopter flying very low circles is an act of defiance? Wow, I never really believed that the govt has paid posters on this site, but why on earth would someone say that filming a circling helocopter was an act of defiance?

It would be.... if they were actively searching for her, she was a criminal and she knew that they were looking for her.

So basically you are saying if the police are searching for an individual who happens to be of a different race and whose build is on the really big side - its ok to trash everyones rights for expediencies sake. Kinda like declaring open season on pickup drivers as an example.

There you go he could have charged her with "defiant use of a camera" thats really rich.

Too much gubmint education - do they even teach the constitution anymore?

Hey, I'm not a gov't poster and in fact I stand on the 'other side' with this whole issue, Sandy Hook, Aurora and 9/11. (In fact I would bet that some of my suspicions are way more radical than yours!)

What I am, though is FAIR....I don't belong to any teams on any issue and use my common sense.

I think a mountain was made out of a molehill with this one, for the sake of sensationalism and cronyism, taking the fixed stance that "all cops are bad", etc....

What you didn't NOT mention was the main point of my post: That extraordinary cop activity was going on in that area that day, because of the close proximity to the heavy police activity THAT DAY!

This cop was just a County cop doing what they do there,(air patrol on I-15) with special instructions for that particular situation.

As for 'defiance', this was in the middle of the phucking desert, on the speediest stretch of desert interstate towards Las Vegas. There was good reason to be on extra lookout, especially on that road.

It's obvious that the heli was approaching them and them only. I wouldn not have copped an attitude towards him, whatever I thought of the situation. Why provoke the guy?

Anyway, how could she know whether he was looking for a woman that could even vaguely follow her description, or even wonder if these two needed help?
His duty was to investigate, which I think he did with reasonable politeness.

1.There was a co-pilot in the helicopter, presumably in radio contact with the guy on foot. Stealing a helicopter isn't a crime of opportunity like stealing a car. It would take the planning and coordination of the efforts of a small gang of armed people, two of which would need to be able to fly a helicopter, which is exceptionally difficult and requires specialized training. Even on the off chance that there just happened to be such an armed gang, including skilled pilots, that just happened to have a place to hide a stolen helicopter on the low hanging out in the desert, they're probably going to be too busy doing whatever armed criminals do in the desert to take advantage of a random air to land traffic stop instead.
The person walking over from the right is a male with no headgear and a backpack, his silhouette is clearly distinguishable from that of the unladen, helmet wearing pilot, seen climbing down out of the cockpit. That's probably Bobby, and since the camera doesn't stay trained in that direction, we don't know what happens, but it's not much of a stretch to think the co-pilot is giving him the same treatment officer Carlos is giving Tiffany.

2.He probably turns his back to Bobby because his partner is engaging him. Officer Carlos appears to be unarmed. Even if he is carrying a gun, it's under his bulky jacket and difficult for him to reach quickly. Either way, he seems to be unfamiliar with carrying a weapon and dealing with armed adversaries. Odds are he spends so little time on the ground that he only meets the bare minimum firearm qualifications like the people that stay in the office their whole careers. That might also explain his unfamiliarity or disregard of the 4th amendment since he's a helicopter pilot and doesn't normally stop pedestrians in his chopper.

3.See response 2. If he's shaking people down looking for a crime to charge them with first and asking questions later so to speak, he's probably not too concerned with procedure and positive ID. Either that or he's unfamiliar with procedure because he's a pilot, not a patrol officer.

4.Looked to me like she was filming with a handheld camera in her right hand. She never moved in front of the camera, all we saw was her left hand and the zippered edge of the left side of her sweater, which would be consistent with a handheld camera in the right hand. The camera is probably shaking because she was minding her own business when she got buzzed by a chopper pilot that subsequently landed and started going through her pockets for no reason. Most people would find that a little unsettling.

5.Cops can be attention whores too. Maybe he's just not intimidated by being filmed. If this is the way stops are handled in San Bernardino, he might not be worried about the command staff seeing the footage since he probably learned it from them in the first place.

And to further clear things up,here is a link to the FAA's website for their aircraft registry. The ID on the chopper checks out with them as being registered to the San Bernardino county sheriff's office.

Maybe the cop was just really lonely and she looked like someone interesting to talk to. He landed and got her name and date of birth. From this he ran her name and she came back as having a weapons possessions charge which gave him probable cause in his mind to search her and see if she was out there in the desert with some guy who's plates he likely had already run and perhaps she had a weapon she might pass to Dormer.

Who knows what was running through his mind. He has a badge, a gun, and a helicopter and can pretty much do what ever he wants in his County by God.

That's hilarious!! Kinda rolls off the tongue.

I saw the title of the thread the other night and didn't see the video.

Pigs will fly when you can't even walk in your own country. Stay within the lines at all times. Any deviation will be taken as an act of civil unrest and you will be shot on sight. You have the right to remain silent. Utilise this right at all times. Any utterance will be taken as contempt of law and you will be shot on sight. Please enjoy your stay in California.

OK smart guy. What if this woman was trafficking children for porn? What if she was loitering around an arranged ransom drop-point? You don't know what was being investigated or how vigilant the police should or should not be.

I can't believe you side with the dumb pothead girl who has to hot-glue her phone together. C'mon man, SHE WAS HOLDING!

It wouldn't have been put on bloody youtube then.

Lmao..

It is what it is and that's all you got, she's a pot head? no wait, a child porn trafficker.

sigh

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
That's what I like & look for.
Some give & take, some back & forth discussion,
from someone who's actually paying attention!!!

Good catch on the back pack /no helmet guy!!!
Going back & pausing it I still had a hard time, even knowing what to look for!
You must have much younger eyes than I do!

Just watching it again I finally caught him telling her that she had a prior for weapons!
Which she said were both dropped. (Too much noise from the chopper!)
So it was her real name.

Star for the link! And taking the time to post it!
Are you LE, ATC, or a PI?

When I first watched the vid, I didn't check to see which side he came from or if there was somebody else inside. Although it's very uncomfortable for me, and I never did it, some helicopter pilots will lock the controls down and leave the helicopter running while they wander. It's OK in some circles. Also, normally the pilot in command is on the right side, for whatever that's worth.

When I first saw this, my first impression and gut instinct was that she should have done what every US citizen should do whenever the 4th is being violated, that being walk away, or ignore the cop, or tell him to mind his own f*&^ing business. It's like when you're being questioned by an LEO with his/her intent on indicting you, you tell them absolutely nothing. You don't agree to a search, you don't agree to go downtown to the precinct with them, and you don't answer anything. If they arrest you, fine, they have a finite amount of time to come up with charges and officially indict and you just call your attorney. End of story.

Youtube comments say this happened in late January, so not in response to the Dormer search, though that would have been a likely reason if it had happened this weekend.

San Bernardino County is HUGE and most of it desert. Someone guessed I-10 behind the cop, may have been the I-15. Two things do go on in that desert area that I could see bringing the cops. Lots of folks drive out to the desert hinterlands to go shooting (including yours truly when younger). May have been a report of shots fired if someone was too close to the road.

Depending on the time of year and location, there are also a number of arson incidents that happen in the mountain area. My family had been evacuated twice due to arson related fires when we lived there. If it were fire season there could have been a call regarding suspicious folks.

But, all in all, weird. I've seen helicopters used in the SB mountains to search/track/relay to ground crews, but never have seen one land before to question someone.

Glad to oblige. Good catch about the prior. I replayed that bit a couple times and couldn't pick it out, I misunderstood what he was saying.
Thank you for the compliment, but I'm just a nobody with a keen eye for detail that knows his rights.
Thanks also for keeping the discussion civil and respectful! That's what ATS is all about, right?

If you find it odd, then obviously you have not been paying attention to the current state of affairs in America. I am willing to bet that you also support anti-gun laws as well. I am not saying there was not something we weren't told, but to assume this is the case, when things like this happen so often in the US, simply points out the fact that you are unaware of what is happening in the US. That is really bad if you actually live here.

This are public servants just like us and you have the right to ask for their IDs and names and whatever, do your job like they do theirs don't be afraid unless you have something to hide, then see how they react.

no consent means no consent since they stop you for a broken light thats, no need to ask for drugs or WEAPONS they have no consent unless you are in the record for being a killer.

stand up to this hungry power as wholes, most of them are possyss.

specially when you can record with your cell phone.

disclaimer there are bigger as wholes who will destroy the evidence, against the law by the way.

Try to walk freely? If not afraid of other criminals (streets and deserts belong to criminals?), one must be in their gang? That?
