I thought numbers were infinit so prime numbers have to be infinit too right? Way beyond my level of comprehension

The largest prime number has been discovered — and it's 17,425,170 digits long. The new prime number crushes the last one discovered in 2008, which was a paltry 12,978,189 digits long

I would like to know what it is in english. Like 999 kajillion 999 bazillion quadrillion lol

I was just curious to see what that many digits looks like, So I figured id just show you as well This is about 15,000 digits count them if you want

And yes, we will keep finding more primes the bigger our set of numbers becomes.

You did it!

There are two uses of large primes. The first is as a seed to generate random numbers, although I'm not immediately aware of a psuedo-RNG which can use such a large number. The second is they are used to "show" a new super computer is working properly. There's some irony in that. If it's a new prime, no one else has ever seen it. So how do they know it worked?

BTW: technically finding new primes is "easy" -- proving it is prime is hard. What they really did is to show the number is prime. You can help search for the next one here: mersenne.org...

Umm, I doubt it is the largest prime number. Perhaps a large one larger than found before, but in infinity there is no limit. Even if you get all the way to the end of infinity, the prime numbers there would be infinite, and even though it looks like you're 1 inch away from everything, the small amount is infinite in it's infinity, and therefore as long as you count, and count and count, you will never get to the end.

Ever.

So the largest number we have, is the smallest one at the end of infinity, and even that is limiting it to an understandable concept that our finite brain can consider.

Even if you go backwards from 1, the smallest part of a number is infinitely bigger than the smallest number at the beginning.

I could go on forever...
