Wow, just wow. How does this happen?

Two Los Angeles-area high school students each had four fingers severed while participating in a group tug of war at a school event.

Apparently the rope snapped and that did it? Not sure I understand the logistics of it.

According to the article, both students are being treated. No word yet on if the doctors were able to reattach the fingers.

I still can't put my finger on it...I mean how does a rope snap causing them to lose their fingers

They had to have had their hands wrapped in some way I would think.

I'm with you, I can't really understand how it severed the fingers.

But you can bet, that tug of war will now be banned from schools.

When I was at school, there used to be a rumour going round that "tugging it will make you go blind" - I guess this story just goes to show that every rumour has a basis in truth.

Thats it, ban tug of war, to many teens have lost fingers in this barbaric game.

Maybe set up a registry of tug o war ropes so we know how many of these ropes are out there. If any ropes are to be grandfathered in they should also register them with the local DHS.

I would also argue ropes cant be longer then 10 ft

Obviously we need to ban tug of war. It is clearly the problem here.

I don't understand it either. Maybe the type of rope used could be a factor? Perhaps nylon?

I had a friend who lost a finger to a snapped tow rope in a water skiing accident....when the rope snapped, his finger went poof...gone, never found it either. One of those freak accidents. This was about 45 years ago....

It's easy to underestimate the amount of power at work depending on how many people are tugging.

I saw a tug of war competition go wrong where the first guy had wrapped the rope around his bicep.
Took his arm off at the shoulder, unbelievable, just shocking.
