N. Carolina is the #1 Tobacco growing state in the US so it should be easy to source out seed.

Tobacco isn't a "controlled substance"

Provided the tobacco isn't sold or traded, the Food and Drug Administration doesn't regulate homegrown tobacco. Most people grow for cigarettes, but some blend their own cigars and chew.

From the same article:

Cigarettes cost an average of $4.35 a pack, home growers can make that amount for about 30 cents.

A grower who purchased one of Johnson's Oriental and Turkish blends for $24.50 could satisfy a pack-a-day habit for more than three years, according to Johnson's calculations.

How would you like to spend $25 and not buy another pack for 3 years? The only thing that's extra is your time/labour. (part of the allure AFAIC)

Kentucky Select is a well-known organic tobacco that works well in cigarettes. However, you need to store rolled cigs in a humidor as the no-additive leaf dries out easily.

I second the comment about getting the machine. We have the top-o-matic crank machine and it works fantastically. The crank machine is so much easier than the injectors and handheld types.

I can make a pack in less than five minutes.

We haven't bought a pack of smokes in over a year.

You can buy better packs than the plastic ones. I found a really cool one at a local gas station, but, I am sure if you look online you could find one that you like.

Mine was 6 bucks.
