OP- I like your post, and I like the perspective you bring to this subject. I normally just spy on threads and don't comment, but given the fact that I decided to go (mostly) vegan a couple months ago. (I still eat eggs (from chickens we raise) and honey, and as far as the non-food items, it's something I'm working on, baby steps I guess) I thought I'd share my 2 cents.

I reached a point where I could no longer justify eating meat. I made the decision for health reasons and for ethical reasons, yes.

However, I don't think it's my place to dictate to people what they can and can't eat. I'm not responsible for your eating habits or anyone else's, just my own. I'm not fond of organizations like PETA for this reason. They make the people who do choose to eat vegan or vegetarian all look like a bunch of fanatic loonies. I think PETA probably drives away more people from a plant based diet then it attracts.

I will say, if you choose to eat meat, you should at least be more mindful of where it's coming from. Not just for ethical reasons, but for logical reasons. An animal that is raised in piss-poor conditions, and then subsequently brutally slaughtered is going to be releasing some nasty stress hormones into it's body that I certainly wouldn't want to eat, even if I weren't a (mostly) vegan.

People should by all means feel free to eat whatever they like and in the case of about a billion people whatever they can.

Without modern agriculture billions would die. Just look at a chart of human population estimates since the introduction of agricultural technology.

However middle class western vegetarians are not standing on any moral high ground compared to someone who kills an animal that is numerous and eats it, what they spend salving their conscience on specialised diets could feed 100 people in any of the worlds poorest countries.

It's a big dollar that organic don't kill the bunny dollar.

Wish bill hicks was still around....

Bacon burger anyone?

Wikipedia vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 deficiency can potentially cause severe and irreversible damage, especially to the brain and nervous system. At levels only slightly lower than normal, a range of symptoms such as fatigue, depression, and poor memory may be experienced.[1]

Someone in China eats a dog, I don't eat dogs , someone in France eats horses, I don't eat horses.

But ya know what - I don't wander all over the internet exponding on my choice with a false and immature ethical smugness - which has no basis whatsoever and appears to be the major side effect of a non meat diet...that and fatigue..and memory loss....poor.....weak...vegans....

So how'd you all feel about vegans who deny children milk, eggs etc?

I guess kids are not as cute as bunny rabbits?

Vegitarians - what happens when ethical thought dies at 15 in middle class suburbia.

They even have built factories to INDUSTRIALISE the process of killing the other sentient animals and chop them in small portions that they pack in plastic. WOW. At first I didn't want to believe it but I have seen the proofs. It's 100% true. They eat dead corpses of animals that are made of exactly the same stuff as them, and almost every human being find that this is totally normal. They even encourage their own LITTLE CHILDREN to eat dead corpses of other sentient beings, imagine that... I mean, what do they have in mind ?? Can't they just think for one second ? I am truly out of words..

Did you know that animals actually kill other animals and some kill people and eat them if they get the chance?

Did you know that everything eats everything else? Pretty much every living thing eats some other living thing.

Appears it actually is totally normal and in fact you are the abnormal one, if we were still hunter gatherers vegetarians would be a lot fewer in number because they would most likely die. What else are you going to eat? Plants? They're living things too, what now? You gonna eat rocks and dirt to survive? No matter what you eat you're still killing and consuming a living thing, so its either eat or die. It's just the way life works, face it.

You know what else is disgusting? Pooping. Gonna stop doing that too?

And carnivore poop is stinkier than vegetarian poop..For real. Vegetarians can actually say My poop doesn't stink (relatively).

If I raised a carrot from a baby, and a dog from a puppy. Would I be more upset if someone ran over my carrot?

Then there is this. ( an oldie but a goodie)

THEY'RE MADE OUT OF MEAT

"They're made out of meat."

"Meat?"

"Meat. They're made out of meat."

"Meat?"

"There's no doubt about it. We picked up several from different parts of the planet, took them aboard our recon vessels, and probed them all the way through. They're completely meat."

"That's impossible. What about the radio signals? The messages to the stars?"

"They use the radio waves to talk, but the signals don't come from them. The signals come from machines."

"So who made the machines? That's who we want to contact."

"They made the machines. That's what I'm trying to tell you. Meat made the machines."

The rest is here
Meat

I'm not sure whether humans started out as hunters or not, but the reason we developed this behavior is easy to explain. Early Homo sapiens did not have the same issues of obesity that we struggle with today - in fact, they had the opposite problem. Survival often depended on getting as many calories as possible, and early humans would have had to forage all day to collect enough vegetarian items just to get by. The act of killing a gazelle, however, would have provided enough protein and fat to last for a week, thereby freeing up their time for other activities such as art, religion, and more sophisticated child-rearing. In summary, civilization itself is a product of our predatory behavior.

Eating Animal Protein and Fats is not what causes obesity.

It is Carbs and specifically Processed Sugars and Machine Ground Flours that have done this.

Humnas have canine teath thus evolved from an ancestor that was carniverous. We are omniverous as this allowed us to get calories froma wider source...but we need Animal Protein and Fats as even though a person can survive on a variety of Fruits and Vegetables...young Children...NEED Animal Fats and Proteins to properly grow and develop.

I think the most interesting question thus far is "if there were an alien species, more intelligent and powerful than us, would you consider it morally right for them to eat people"... Sounds like something straight out of 'The Pig That Wants To Be Eaten" (Baggini).

I would say no, it's not morally right. But not because I think eating meat is morally wrong. Just that from the privileged position as 'top of the food chain",' we get to decide what is morally right or wrong. If something else came along and usurped us from that position, the privilege would pass to them.

Personally, I don't think its an ethical or moral matter but one of inevitability or 'nature' (I use that term loosely).

Taking the scenario of the hypothetical aliens; if they did exist and they came to take us away for food we could fight to protect ourselves, using all the methods at our disposal. In the same way, if you tried to attack and kill a wild boar it would give you a run for your money as best it could (assuming that you don't just shoot it from afar with a high powered rifle).

If we could defend ourselves we wouldn't become their food source and would continue to enjoy the privilege of moralising and setting the standard. If we could not then we would have no choice in the matter, whether it was morally right or not. Just like the deer that cannot outrun the lion has no real choice other than to accept that they are a food source. They group together because they accept that their best chance of survival is to stay in a group and reduce the odds of being the one that can't get away. This is a tacit acceptance of the status quo.

When the disparity of power becomes so great, morality becomes a moot point. It becomes a matter of the greater force exerting it's will over the weaker. This is what we see in nature and the abstract concept that we have tried to neatly label 'the food chain'.

If there was a civilisation so far advanced from ours that the difference in intellect and power was the difference between a human being and a pig, the discussion of morals and ethics would cease to be relevant to us (the food supply) and would really be a matter for the aliens to decide upon. It may not seem fair but that would be the natural order of things.

Would I support the alien's right to eat my kids? No, of course not... Would it matter what my opinion was? Not one bit.

They wouldn't consider our thoughts, feelings or perspective any  more than you would consider what went through a chicken's brain before they put a charge through it and cut it's throat...

A sufficiently advanced society would view our primitive communications and thought processes in the same way we view the grunts and snorts of the animals in the farmyard.

I could go on about this but I'll leave it at that and see if anyone has any thoughts on this... I hope I made some sense

Also, this thread brought to mind a quote from the highly offensive Scottish comedian, Frankie Boyle in "unlikely things to hear at a dinner party";

"yes, there is a vegetarian option, you can f*** off.."

That was sarcasm you know. I just thought that I should clear that up....even though I shouldn't have to.

Anyway, if GOD didn't want us to eat animals........he wouldn't have made them so tasty.

Although eating mostly fruits and veggies is undoubtly the best way to fead the human body, plants are alive
also.
There are living things in the air we breath should we stop breathing?

The Indian scientist Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose, very well known for this research in botany, found out that plants appeared to have a very sensitive nervous system, and responded to shocks just like the human muscle does. When cut, they feel pain. When they are grown amidst pleasant music, they grow better (they feel happy!) – but when put amidst loud music and harsh words they grow much slower (perhaps they feel frustrated!).

Nature made us omnivores. Yes, we can survive on just eating plants but most people enjoy the taste of meat because that's how we've evolved as a species. It's broccoli vs bacon and I'm afraid bacon wins every time. Yum yum, tasty piggies!

Name any popular food source that has an exclusive anything. Everything shares vitamins, nutrients and proteins. On that note, good luck finding a protein source as a vegetarian that is not going to cost you an arm and a leg and that will keep you from going hungry.
My wife is a vegetarian and I have to listen to her stomach growl all night, every night.....she's always complaining about eating and then being hungry again 30 minutes later.

Seems like suffering to me. I let the animals suffer and then I eat them so that their lives were not lived in vain by just standing around and eating grass and not contributing to society. This way they can contribute to society.

I have killed animals and I have eaten them all my life, so I think it's safe to say that I have a closer relationship to animals than a vegetarian, (I mean, they were actually inside my body), anyway, I think I can speak for most of the animals.
As I look into a cow's eyes.....he is begs me to put him out of his misery and make something of him.
Rabbits have voted me into their public offices and are inquiring of what can be done about population control....cause rabbit's get it on!.....I give them peace.

I could go on and on, but I am eating a dead animal right now and although it does taste extremely delicious........I choose to remember the good times, where it used to play in the green, grassy fields with other animals.
.......I ate them too!

This is absurd. We've been eating meat for a long time, I don't see that changing. Can you imagine a planet full of Vegans? Ugh.

Expecially Steak, grass fed of couse.. i don't get the point of this thread..It seems irrelevant..Unless you've been living under a rock as posted earlier.. Animals eat each other also, more or so to survive. Animals eat humans, It's just the way it is, are you saying Animals are crazy? We eat each other

Didn't you ever hear of breathairians, air has everything you need to live in it.
( sorry need a spell check on that one )

But anyhow there are people all over the world that claim they never eat regular food stuff..

I myself lean more toward the fruitarian diet, back when we were in the forest. It causes genetic changes you would not believe, also the use of the the other hemisphere of the brain more.

There is a book out called L " Left in the Dark " which explains much more on this subject. The guy stayed up for 11 days which would kill normal person, but he forced hid brain to switch hemispheres .

I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner sulaw

How about the mourning process? How many times have you seen a Deer or buffalo go to a therapist because there thoughts are running rampant? Do we not as Humans process life and death on a different scale from animals and other mammals?

How would we know something like that sulaw? We would only know if we bothered to look - and science has only recently begun to examine some of this

It's starting to look like many of our fellow animals have emotions - just like us. And they suffer - just like us - with or without emotions

Not that Animals don't have emotions as Sentient beings, particularly the humans process of life and death can in my own experiance explain human consciousness and the difference between us and animals.

I'm not sure what you were trying to say here - I hope you'll come back and explain

If you read in the Bible it said and from this day forward the animals will fear you and they shall be your MEAT.
I think that was after Noah?

What Cain and Able offered to God didn't like the vegies, liked the smell of the burnt Meat, there's alot more to that thought, it's almost the smell of some thing else, you can figure it out on your own." I am YaHVeH I'm the boss you don't listen to the other Dude's understand." that is quote """
