If software from a few years back is "prehistoric" then that's either some amazing, leaps-and-bounds improvement in software, or they planned it that way.

Windows XP is not so far off from Windows 7 or 8 that it could be considered "prehistoric" Maybe Win98 is. To a degree. Furthermore, if I have a windows 8 system, I can still run all the software for XP. In many cases that even works the other way around-- where brand new software will still run on the old OS.

Anything else would be ridiculous.

I absolutely agree with this. I don't know if I'd say "most of the fundamentals," but then again, maybe you know more about business than I do.

I would however, say quite a lot of business practices which are standard, and/or accepted are forms of cheating.

Which is yet another reason I can't stand 1%'er, corporatist-cheerleaders, when they claim that "it's capitalism so it's a fair system-- and everyone has an equal chance" and blah-blah-irrelevant- blah. We haven't been "capitalist" for a long time. Corporatism is what allows these disgusting practices, which are anything but even or fair. The deck is stacked. The dice are loaded. And if you're not the house, or friends with the dealer, you're SOL and losing the shirt off your back to fuel someone else' habit of insatiable greed.

I don't really know what you mean by this. You must have either had some crappy machine(s) or otherwise done something not-too-smart with it.

Often on my PC's, usually, in fact, I will turn off the automatic updates, and I will not often choose to install them. i remember there was something a while back with one of the XP SP2 updates that was causing some people issues so I turned off updates on my machine, and never turned them on or installed any. That was one of my best, and longest-lasting computers. Never had to wipe it. It actually only died when a power line got knocked down near my house, and for whatever reason my surge protector did not protect it. The computer was maybe 7 years old at that point-- and running like brand new.

Using a decent browser (like firefox) instead of IE will also clear up a lot of issues with malware, popups, etc.

I can't even tell you the last time I had anything like adware or a pop-up. It's been quite a number of years.

Buy yourself ALLLL the computers you can find that are PRE-2000. Those computers have locked BIOS's and will continue to work forever. The NEW Bios's have an operating system running in them now allowing someone to switch OFF your motherboard.

This is ridiculous if that was the case there would be a class action lawsuit against HP and they would be shut down. Products of every stripe and color are designed to fail outside of warranty so the companies don't have to use money and resources to fix it for free.

How do you know such a lawsuit didn't happen? Or a settlement, etc....?

I heard of this exact thing happening with another piece of hardware. I want to say it was a certain kind of printer. maybe I got that from the aforementioned documentary. I'll have to see if I can find a copy of that...

Ongoing issues with early adoption of electronics that can be expected.

iPad 1 really doesn't have the basic system requirements for OS6 from what I understand, this is a limitation with any early electronics in a product line, I believe that anything below iPod 3 or lower can't support it either.

Apple actually expects its customers to shell out for hardware / product upgrades every 6 months or so, and expects that customers will keep buying iphones, ipods, and ipads as they get upgraded.

Unfortunately, they're right, for the most part.

Just loot at how cars are made. It would cost something like 10 cents a pound extra to make cars out of stainless steel that doesn't rust. I seem to recall reading about a guy who tried to actually make rust proof cars who died mysteriously.

I like to sleep with a fan for the white noise, but I have to replace my new fan about once a year. Or did until I found an old fan in a thrift shop, and I doubt I'll ever have to replace it again.

I go out of my way to find older products instead of buying new. They last longer and are easier to maintain.

I'll also probably be using windows XP until the day I die.

After a gazillion versions of the ipod...you thought the ipad or iphone were going to be different?

I have a 1st generation ipod nano...it is 6 years old...and people look at my like I'm a dinosaur when they see me using it. They ask me why I haven't gotten a newer one...and I tell them that this one still works. It's like they don't even understand what I'm saying...they can not understand why I would still be using this one when there are newer ones out.

You should use Chrome. I found that firefox tends to randomly crash on me and also has a tendency to load many of those stupid adware bars at the top of the screen. I had to install CCleaner onto my computer (great tool to clean up your computer with) to get firefox back to a reasonable state. Meanwhile, I've never had any issues with Chrome. Takes a minute to get used to it and figure out how to adjust settings and stuff, but once you do it is WAY better than firefox and doesn't even compare to IE.

Ontopic: I have owned two Apple products in my life. An iPod Mini (don't even make these anymore) 5 gb. This I gave to my father who ended up replacing the battery and somehow got it to continue to work. Me I had given up on it. The other one is an iPod classic 80 gb. I got this for free from my work when my work still had a rewards program (so pre-2008). It is currently full and one of my favorite possessions. I have it hooked to my car and because it is full I basically get a private radio station (9118 songs are on it) while never having to listen to a commercial and never having to hear a song or band that I don't like or want to listen to at that moment. But the thing I love the most about it, is that it was completely free.

My cell phone is a Galaxy S3. It's better then any iPhone on the market right now and uses the droid OS. To make things better, the school I'm attending for computer science offers android development classes. Apple is going to obsolescence themselves into irrelevancy.

ETA: I really hate this whole fad that Apple started where they put a lowercase "i" in front of the name of the product then capitalize the second letter. Apple spitting on English grammar and everyone just accepts it.

My wife has an older ipod nano that she loves using. I bought it as a pawn shop about 6 years ago, and it still works great.

We also have 2 Ipod touch.. Both of those are great, too. But they are far more delicate. On both, there are button related issues (like the top button doesn't work properly, or the home one sticks). One of them has to be reset about every 6 months (meaning a resync of music).

I have moved away from non-Apple mp3's mostly because I haven't yet found one that is on par. Of course, I haven't looked at them in a couple of years.

For me, the touch is awesome because i can easily manipulate it while it is docked in the transmitter/charger in my car.

You know what Cyber you're right. I was on the fence about whether to continue mac or go PC and you've just helped me tip that in the PC direction. I use PC's at work all day, so why not at home too. I bet my buddies laptop from 2009 can still play youtube. Unlike my similar aged macbook piece of crap.

Seriously apple. Way too go. Pissing off whoever makes Flash so my mac cant support it. Then trying to floss me to "upgrade" Buy a whole new Fing computer just so that I can regain the usage of the basics programs everyone else can enjoy on PC based systems even if they are veteran systems. Maybe PC should start a ad compaign against macs. "You don't support the Veterans, mac. Thats F'ed up!"

Today I was using stumbleupon and happened to stumble a page which had an infographic I find to be relevant to this topic. It was kind of entertaining / enlightening to read. The long-ish infographic is linked below.




And I can testify to the issues with some ipod/itunes software on a PC. A number of years ago when my younger brother got an ipod, I let him install the software on my computer, so he could use it to transfer music and such.... and I had to wipe the computer and re-install windows, it messed it up so bad. To be fair, I have run itunes on some PC's with minimal trouble. However, installing the ipod software from the disk that one time more or less wrecked my whole OS.


I'd also like to point out that it's funny that apple is aggressive with protecting their patents, etc... when they more or less "stole" their company name from the "Apple Corps" record company. Sure, it could be argued that this is not direct infringement... and it 100% wasn't... up until apple products started to play music. I forget the exact story behind this, but Apple does have a kind of "friendly" deal with Apple Corps records for not suing them over the name. Maybe I can turn up a link on that later, if anyone is interested.

Don't get me wrong-- I don't hate apple or anything. Their products do seem to have some cool features-- but I really despise a lot of the shady business practices I've heard of, coming from them.....
