Is there a fundamental difference in the brain actvity of Democrats as compared to republicans? Last month, Drs. Joshua Freedman and Marco Iacoboni of the University of California at Los Angeles finished the first study attempting to find out and the results may surprise you. Using FMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) They scanned the brains of 10 democrats and 10 republicans as they viewed different political images in an attempt to discover why some are red and some are blue.

SAN DIEGO -- Applying some of the same brain-scan technology used to understand Alzheimer's and autism, scientists are trying to learn what makes a Republican's mind different from a Democrat's.

Brain scanning is moving rapidly beyond diseases to measuring how we react to religious experiences, racial prejudice, even Coke versus Pepsi. This election season, some scientists are trying to find out whether the technology can help political consultants get inside voters' heads more effectively than focus groups or polls.

Already, the scientists are predicting that brain scanning known as functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI will be a campaign staple four years from now, despite ethical concerns about "neuromarketing."

In the future political campaigns may literally be getting into voters heads to determine how best to present thier candidates. The moral and ethical questons regarding such practices are huge and need to be discussed. One thing this study has already done however is lay to rest the claim that republicans vote from fear.

Important story mwm - thanks. ...The article quotes someone as saying this direction is dangerous, 'This is a technology that could help people - instead, it's being subverted to manipulate them.'

*sigh*

Hmmm, lets just wedge that spike in there a little bit more shall we? Why on this green earth are doctors pissing away money on political experiments instead of working on cures and treatements? Capitalism and our system at its finest working hard to find new ways to manipulate, control and generally take advantage of us, our minds and more importantly our wallets.

Which media network will be the first to show us the MRI of a candidate while he is speaking. I'd even settle for a voice stress analyzer (vsa) at the bottom of TV screen. Can anyone recommend a good PC based vsa?
