ATS Is A DisInformation Center

Just look at the threads that continuously become 'top stories.' Look at the patterns in the way threads of ANY topic are replied to, the patterns through which stars and flags are given. All of this puts into motion a pattern, that determines the trends of the forum. These trends are totally counter-productive to anyone who is serious about 'denying ignorance,' and making the world a better place. This entire forum is designed to seem like a 'non-mainstream counter-culture,' so that all such people will come here. And yet, it's clear that the whole purpose of this forum is to perpetuate the mainstream story line that the mass-media feeds us, with all the same characters and conflicts. The only difference is that it's more 'edgy' and 'controversial.' All that means is that it's encouraged to be as extreme, immature, and accusatory as possible towards the characters(republicans, democrats, etc) of the mainstream stories.

What happens when someone makes a thread trying to get us beyond the mainstream storylines and characters, points out that 'republican vs. democrat,' 'liberal vs. conservative,' etc, are all total distractions that don't reflect the reality of the situation at all? Or just makes a thread that gets to the heart of the real issues, without name-dropping those labels, or bringing up those popular narratives? Well, certainly it's not going to become a top story. It may receive no attention at all. If it does receive attention, it will be something like this. "Yea, people need to wake up and realize that Obama and the Democrats are turning this country into a socialist dictatorship!" or "We need to finally get rid of the GOP once and for all. They're a bunch of ignorant, war-mongering fascists." The mainstream dilemma instantly gets inserted, and then suddenly you got an intense argument, where everyone is flaming each other, using the popular labels/narratives.

There are some intelligent people on this site, sure. But the site itself, while it claims to help with 'denying ignorance,' sorting through misinformation, etc, is actually the biggest hotspot for perpetuating ignorance and DisInformation that I'm aware of. Just look through the 'top stories.' Read the posts that spark the conversations. All this site DOES is perpetuate the mainstream storyline, just using more extreme terminology than most people do. Look at what happened during the election, even during the republican primaries, when Ron Paul was running! They were advertising Mitt Romney and Obama, asking which one you supported! Deny ignorance? I think not...I know of no bigger DisInformation Center, designed to keep people distracted, then AboveTopSecret.

I think your confusing a person disagreeing about whether something is true or not and attempting to seperate fact from fiction with the idea of disinformation.

There are many things that are conspiracies and there are many things that are not. Would you rather that we just accepted every story or idea as a conspiracy every time?

Fact is...without being able to use logic and experience to seperate the Bull from the facts...we would all just be spinning our wheels.

it seems like there is an uptick of people who make "youtube" type comments on here. those type of comments seem to receive the most stars and attention. perhaps it's more of a star gathering situation than disinformation?
maybe it's just the evolution of a website? i don't have the answer.

your thread does get me to think.

I actually consider myself a "Counter Anti-Disinformation Double Agent".....I sometimes don't even know who I work for.....

They stay, unless they don't follow the T&C.

I'll admit that many, maybe even most threads don't give much outside of mainstream thought, but some do. It's better than 99% of other websites out there to try and get an "out of the box" perspective.

I think the conspiracy, fringe theories and general "alternative info" may have been an idea in the past but now its just a pretty nice chat forum. And that is okay. Mom and Pop stores don't operate the same way as Wal-Mart because it does not work. It really is a catch 22, you can't be "alternative" and still be huge. ATS is a business and a successful one by the looks of it, everyone needs to eat.
So its not a disinfo center its just closer to Hot-Topic than your local record store.
Just do a search, there is plenty of stuff here that is probably not "disinfo" to you. I bet I could find 3 threads written by aliens or whatever you think is not "disinfo".

As far as I can see information and disinformation are everywhere. It is up to the individual to engage their own intellect with regard to decision making. Individuals need to discern for themselves what is true and what is not true.

The entire internet is monitored so what's the point in worrying about it. Just join in and ask questions and take a bit of abuse and give your opinion anyway. What did George Carlin say - what are you gonna do - eat at Wendys and play with yourself until the end of time????

No, look at the URL, it's truncated. mOjOm needs to fix the link.

So you want "perfection"? Good luck, it doesn't exist when there is an "open to the public" community. You welcome in any and all kinds of folks, as ATS does, and anarchy may ensue. It's a private site, but doesn't restrict access to joining to anyone for any reason, that I know of that is.

I have a good amount of "stars" and I am a nobody. My opinions, ideas, personality, and pure intent show through my posts and if people star those, it's because they concur and/or feel strongly about the words I used, same applies to you. Put your armchair mouth where your mind is here and see where it takes you. The only editing going on is in violation of their T&C on this private site. Come into my home, and I'll have do's and don't's of what I want in my house too.

If ATS has disinformation, it's also an open information center with true information.... both are true. It's up to you to discern fact from fiction. Do your own research into what is said here and form your own opinion. If you don't like it here, don't come here.

The true power and joy of ATS is that it's 100% user driven content with little staff interference and virutally no 'guidance' or nudging from staff. That's almost unique for a site this size.

What it does for power is allow anyone ...even you, OP...to write short threads with little to add, average threads that get a narrow interest group reading and appreciate or truly great threads that take anywhere from a couple hours to a few weeks to fully collect research for and 'publish', as that is pretty much the correct term for work that extensive.

Anyone can be the next author to a classic 'mega-thread' others refer friends here to read for high quality content. It's all a question of how much each of us wants to put into trying and how good we each want to get at it.

Dude, I've been a member for almost a decade.....

I sometimes just like to see what happens around here....

Hang out for a long time and sometimes there is more Truth in the Patterns of Member reactions than in all the conversations....

The thing is that divide and conquer is alive and well here. Lots of partisanship. Lots of rightwingnut bullshavitz. Parroting crud from unreliable sources.

We need to find a middle ground. A place where we can find issues that are most important. There is a serious need to come together. It is the only way.
