If they did their research they would have found this out and couldn't blame NASA, the "military industrial complex" and George W. Bush. Ignorance is bliss.

they knew from the time they made orbit they wouldn't make it back. When the piece of the heat shiels was tracking with the ship for a while and they had it on radar. They knew something fell off but didn't know for sure what. But everyone knew it was a one way trip after that

I know which shuttle mission I am talking.about. Columbia broke up on rentry over Texas spread over 3 states after foam insulation from the main tank broke off and shattered the wing heat tiles. So i quote this article: www.spaceflightnow.com...

similarities between how the shuttle Challenger broke up during launch
in 1986 and how Columbia met its fate during re-entry in 2003. In both
cases, the reinforced crew modules broke away from the shuttle fuselage
relatively intact. And in both cases, the astronauts are believed to have
survived the initial breakup."
