Is this what you are referring to?
A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
A well regulated militia......it's talking about raising an army from the population to protect the country against foreign aggressors - not for shooting burglars and definitely not for overthrowing your government!
Back in the day (18th century) when your country was very young and didn't have a standing army, the government relied on the people to be armed, so they could be called upon at short notice.
It's not relevant any more.
You've got an army!
Thousands of innocents are slaughtered each year by crooks and deranged individuals.....because it's easy to buy handguns.
Can't you see that it's the easy accessibility to firearms which is at the root of this problem?

Honestly, America IS a nation of paranoid, scared individuals. Having been inside the US my entire life, born and raised, and having a sister born and raised here as well, with the exception that she has traveled to almost 20 different countries around the entire globe....we both have realized how fearful Americans are.
Honestly, we are almost indoctrinated to be that way. We've been a hardcore police state since 9/11, and even before that we were already so far along in the process towards a police state, that actually becoming one wasn't a surprise.
We are afraid of each other, afraid of our government, afraid of foreigners, and afraid of other Countries. We were taught and indoctrinated to think this way.

I do not live in terror, I do not own a gun. However I would like to have the freedom to own one.

The thing people like you seem to ignore is that ALL of the Bill of Rights are INDIVIDUAL rights. This has been confirmed by The Supreme Court many times. All anyone ever needs to do is read the intent of the founding fathers in making sure The Second Amendment would not be INFRINGED. It had NOTHING to do with hunting, or self defense. Criminals do not obey laws, and it is quite naive to think more gun laws will prevent crime. It would only disarm more good guys.
